Hi Peter, was reading your post and wondered if your Dad is Uncle Frank ? If so Im Uncle Laurie & Aunty Jeans daughter ex Wynyard. I changed my name some years back to Grandmas family name.Would be nice to make contact as I have lived away from Tassie for some 32 years now. I reside in Queensland but travel overseas a bit.

Hi, Phillip Jacob Miller is my 3rd Great Grandfather. I would like information on the Poke branch. Also, I cannot find the cemetery that Philip and Catherine is bured in. Can you help?

Hi Ann,
your post was a very long time ago now but I thought I would reply anyway. My maiden name was Sharon Poke and I am from the Poke clan that Peter referred to in his reply, originally from Circular Head in Tasmania. We are descended from Ann (nee Siggs) and John Poke who departed from Sussex in the mid 1800's and subsequently settled in the Circular Head area.
Although I now live in NSW, my family and the many branches still populate this area of Tasmania.

I have tried many times to trace John and Ann prior to their arrival in Australia without much success so far. I would be very interested whether these are the same people you were referring to because I believe they sailed out on the 'Rapid' as well.

Came across your e-mail by accident and joined rootsweb to reply. I hope you get this message. I am Chris Pollock and my family has lived in Nottingham PA Chester County area for many years (100s). Local cemetary in Nottingham has several graves the oldest dating back to a 1798 birth. If you would like location of cemetary please let me know. I am very interested in pension files. Could take me back further. Please advise.

Information needed on Adam Poke 1731-1791/4. Wife Barbara: 1735-1795/6.The earlyest date I have them is Dec.30 1746 in Hunterdon County New Jersey.They move to Loudoun County Virginia in 1768. Then in 1780 they arrive in Shenandoah County Virginia. I would like to know when they left Germany,on what ship, arrived in Philadelphia. When did they go to New Jersey.How does Moses Poke fit in? He weds Sarah Bunting in June 1741in Philly. The surname is spelled many ways Poke, Pock,Poak,Poage,Poge,Polk etc.

My family originally settled in the Circular Head district of Tasmania (Smithton; Stanley)in the late 1800's. Still a considerable number of family members in the area although I have lost touch with most of them. I moved to the mainland in 1971 & have lived in Canberra for the last 10 years. I do have a copy of our family history "filed" somewhere & my Sister Suzanne is seriously interested in the various branches of the clan. I am trying to find any relations to the Pokes from Somerset I have a Elizabeth Ann Poke who married a Sidney Gamblin in 1884. Her father was called William who was an engine driver and Sidney's father was called Henry and he was a railway porter.

LFI ancestry of George Pollock, aka POKE(at his 1776/7 enlistment in Rev. War at "West" Nottingham, Chester Co. PA.) Served w/5th PA Line.
Possible brother DAVID Pollock, who also served (diff. Co.have both their Rev. War Pension files)
Geo. Disch. Trenton, NJ 1781. Possibly either stayed in NJ or returned there to marry 1st w. Nelly, though don't really know. Could have met her during his service there in War, could have been a PA girl..
Possible cousin Major Kirkpatrick of the VA Line(wounded/killed) at Battle of Princeton - stated cousin of David.
Geo. stated he Left his Disch. papers with a David Kirkpatrick, Esq. of "Bascon-ridge, or Beacon-ridge, Somerset Co." to try for land on his service. Could be Somerset Co. PA, NJ, or MD??? (still looking). Coincidence of Kirkpatrick names???
Geo. & Nelly had 3 ch.: John, George Jr. (my line) & Elizabeth (b. 1796) Nelly poss. d. as result of E's birth, for on 11/13/1798, George Pollock is now in SCHOHARIE CO., NEW YORK, where he marries 2d w. Louisa W(right?) (nee Unknown) Blanchard, widow of Luther Blanchard. They also have ch., all in Scho.Co., where family remained. WHY they ended up there is a mystery...no info found on any Rev. War land grant to date.
Son George Jr. marries twice too, with father and son both having children at same time, by multiple wives, with multiple baptisms - VERY confusing, but think this is sorted out now.
Alt. sp. of names found: Poke, Pollock, Pocke, Pok, etc. makes this family difficult to trace. Origins uncertain - could be Scots, could be German "Palatine"?
Let's hear from all POKE; POLLOCK, etc. fams. from Colonial CHESTER CO. PA , specifically Nottingham Twp., as well as the WEST NOTTINGHAM, CECIL CO. MD area (which is where Nottingham ended up being in aft. abt 1788)
Give a shout!! Let's try to figure out the history and origins of this family!

Eli Poke was b. abt. 1818 in N.C./S.C.
His daughter lived in MS and I think tha she was born there abt. 1853 in Yalobusha Co. She lived in the home of relatives the Tatum's then with her aunt Jane Lauler who was marr. to a Thomas Gleason and lived in Grenada Co, also MS, in 1870 census data .
Eli (POLK)and Mary E. AKA America Polk were listed on census data files for 1860 in the Tatum .H.H.
Also on these files are a Daniel Polk b. abt. 1847.
Mary E. POKE/POLK is my GrGRGrandmother.

If this is the same Adam Poke and Barbara that I'm referring to, her maiden name was 'Six'. I only know about the one daughter, Catherine, who married Philip Jacob Miller. She was born in Shenandoah Co., VA, and died there in 1821. Philip Jacob Miller was born in 1764. I have their children, if that would help.

We migrated to Australia in 1963.May Poke my mother (deceased-1988) father Eric with my brother Alan. We have a sister Sandra born in Australia. I would like to contact my cousins whose fathers names are as follows:
Bill Poke:(deceased) wife-Kathline Poke.(deceased).children- Carol,David,and William.
Jack Poke: whereabouts unknown, wife: Flow ?? Poke.the had 4 or 5 children there names I cannot recall.The area we lived in Manchester England. Some of my cousins could have travelled over seas to Australia but where, I do not know. I hope someone can help me track them down.
