Possibly the maiden name is Pelikan.

In researching some Pokornys, I found a ship's list:

Weser, June 21, 1879, page 6 of 10.

It's interesting in that Pokorny, Pribyl, and Knoll are all on that same page.

I am not related to any Pokorny family as far as I know. Imagine my surprise when I found this old photo in a box of old family photos at my sister's house. One of our relatives is possibly standing in the photo, but that is just speculation so far. The photo itself is very faded and fragile. I was able to enhance it digitally to what you see here.
"JOS. POKORNY'S 4 MILE HOUSE" would likely have been four miles outside the Baltimore city limits in Maryland. Its exact location would be pure speculation on my part. I just hope that someone in this board will find this interesting.

Bill Manzke

I am researching my step-father's family. His Grandmother was Mathilda Pokorny, b. Aug 1871 in Bohemia. She is said to have been the youngest of 16 children. She immmigrated to the US in 1892 and ended up in Chicago where she married Joseph Stein, b. 24 Feb 1869 in Bohemia, who immigrated in 1891. Joseph was naturalized but Mathilda apparently never was.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

This thread is SO old I honestly don't expect you to see it, Shawna, but I had to reply. My great uncle is Jake Pokorney. He was my very favorite uncle...well...him and his brother Frank. I grew up with Iva. She was my great grandmother (mom) too and she raised me after my mother died. I know who your great grandfather is, but I never met him. Mom spoke of him, not too favorably LOL, but I'm sure that we're family. If you see this. Send me an e-mail and we'll catch up.

I can tell you that Jake passed quite a while ago. He was there when mom died and was the only one that really reached out to me and knew how badly I was going to miss her. I think the others wanted to, but didn't know how. He and I always had a connection though. He was an interesting character and seemed to always be into something, but that's just another reason I liked him. Anyway, e-mail me if you get this.

Hi,

I spotted a post you made to ancestry.com message board back in 2002 re: Pokorny family.
Are you still at this email address?

I have an old photo of the Rudolph and Josephine Pokorny residence in Tenafly. It was a beautiful house, one of the only houses on the block at time it was built - and it is still standing. I grew up around the corner from this house in Tenafly. I am still in Tenafly, but another block away.

Your Joseph Pokorny family lived across town on Columbus Drive.

From what I understand, one of the Pokorny daughters was a school teacher at a Tenafly elementary school. I am not sure if this was a daughter of Rudolph or Joseph.

Would you be interested in the photo? Do you have anything else on the Pokornys of Tenafly?

Kind Regards,
Paul
pjstef@yahoo.com

AGNES POKORNY MARRIED JOSEPH FRANK FIALA

My great great grandmother, Agnes Pokorny was born 24, Nov. 1846 in Bohemia, and married Joseph Fiala (not sure of his first name) and had the following children: Frank, Agnes, Joseph and Matthew that I know of.

My great grandmother, Agnes Fiala, was born 27 Dec 1881 in Dennison, Texas. Her mother's, (Agnes Pokorny's), death certificate lists her father as John Pokorny and her mother as unknown. The Pokorny's lived and died in and around the St. Louis, Missouri area. Agnes Pokorny Fiala died April 18, 1914 in St. Louis and is buried in St. Peter and St. Paul Cemetery in St. Louis, Missouri. I believe this is a Catholic cemetery. According to the Missouri death database, there are more Pokorny's buried in St. Peter and St. Paul. Does any of this ring a bell with anyone?

He was married twice the second time to my great grandmother Iva Hager. I have no idea who his parents were. I only know that either his father died or his parents were divorced because she was married to a Wagner when he immigrated to the USA. I know that he had a brother named Harry Wagner and that he himself used that name.

Debbie,

I don't have much time right now, but I think I know where Agnes Pokorny was born and her parent's names. My husband is a Pokorny, and I think Agnes came from the same location as his did. I am sure I found the ship passenger list for the Fiala family. Agnes Fiala, as well as her siblings, were all born in Bohemia, and not Texas as you suggest, unless I have the wrong Fiala family in St. Louis.

Ruth Pokorny
-----------
Unfortunately, the census page has a big black blotch covering up most of the vital info. Maybe the original census page at the local St. Louis library will have a better copy.

1900 Census St Louis Ward 10, St Louis (Independent City),
Missouri

Frank Fiala born abt 1847 Bohemia Head Emigrated 1891

Agnes Fiala born abt 1847 Bohemia Wife Emigrated 1891

Frank Fiala born abt 1875 Bohemia Son Emigrated 1891

Agnes Fiala born abt 1880 Bohemia Daughter Emigrated 1891

Mathias Fiala born ---- Bohemia Son Emigrated 1891
-----------
In 1910, Agnes was a widow, age 62, and she stated that she
had 5 children, 5 living. She lived with her son Frank, age
24. Both stated that they ere born in Austria Bohemia, and
emigrated 1890
-----------
I am sure that this is your family...

New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957

Arrival Date--8 Dec 1891
Port of Departure--Hamburg, Germany
Ethnicity/Nationality--Bohemian
Ship Name--Rhaetia

Hailing Place or Place of starting---Budweis

*****Budweis is German for Ceske Budejovice, in Bohemia,
Czechoslovakia (Now in the Czech Republic)

Name----Estimated birth year---Gender

Franz Fiala-----abt 1849-----Male (age 42) (Tailor)

Agnes Fiala-----abt 1846-----Female (age 45) (wife)

Maria Fiala-----abt 1873-----Female (age 18)

Josef Fiala-----abt 1877-----Male (age 14)

Franz Fiala-----abt 1881-----Male (age 10)(then age 14 written next to 10 about 1877)

Manes (Agnes) Fiala-----abt 1884-----Female (age 7)(then age 10 written next to 7-about 1880)

Marchie (Martts?
Debbie,

E-mail me privately. I had a genealogist help me with my husband's Pokorny family, and his last name is Fiala. Maybe he is related to you. I have a few descendant reports to send you. Jaroslav Fiala mainly did my husband's line, but did find some other Pokorny's along the way, who may be related to ours. One was an Agnes Pokorny born November 13, 1846 in Kvitkovice, Czech-Republic, parent's Johan Pokorny and Maria nee (Mathias) Hruska (Houska?).

In the meantime, I will try to contact Jaroslav. It's been a few years.

Ruth Pokorny ppokorny@new.rr.com

My grandfather's name is Anthony Pokorny. He has/had three sisters named Catherine, Rose, and Stella. They live/lived in PA in/near a small town called Altoona.

Their parents were named Henryk Joseph Pokorny and Mary Burka. Henryk Pokorny was a taylor in Altoona who came to the US in 1903 or 1904 from Poland. He had two brothers who also came to the US with him.

Henryk's parents were named Anna Serbanski, a Hungarian women, and Anthony Henry Pokorny . Anthony's parents disowned him when he married Anna. His family was from Poland (?)

That is the limited information I have and I'm looking to gain more info about my family's background. Does this sound familiar. Please email me at cpokorny@hotmail.com or post a reply. Thanks.

Rose Pokorny

I am searching for information about my great grandmother Rose, born about 1839 in Bohemia. Family oral history is that she was married to a man, first name unknown Surname Porkorna or Porkorny in Bohemia. Her maiden name as given on her daughter's marriage certificate was Petekan or Petekau. Handwriting is uncertain. He was killed in a farm accident and she immigrated to America with her two daughters Marie and Frances (or Fannie). Fannie would have been 13-15 and Marie older. Date of immigration is 1880 or 1802. I can't find her or daughters on ship's lists. Family oral history also said she gave her surname as Prybil as she was being sponsored by a family in Nebraska (possibly) by that surname. Later she married Frank Prybil. Family history says that was her brother, but I do not think so, possibly she knew him before and he offered marriage if she immigrated. Later Frances or Fannie married Ernest Knoll in Omaha Nebraska. Does this interface with anyone's family history?

Caroline Pokorny

I'm looking for a Caroline Pokorny. Daughter of Frank and Anna Pokorny who came to NY in about 1898 from Czech. She was born Jan. 1891. Had 2 Brothers Frank and Charles that came over with her. A sister Anna, and a Rose or Rosa born in NY that appears to have died at a young age. This has not been confirmed yet.
After leaving NY, the boys and Anna moved to Stafford Springs, CT in the early 1900's. Caroline was never listed in CT. Anything sound familar to anyone??
Brenda Pokorny (bpokorny1@cox.net)
