Hi. I don't mean to insult your intelligence, but if this is a very old relative, have you checked Ellis Island's website for info? I was just there on a whim, having always thought my grandfather did not come throught there, but I entered his name anyway and found him. I was looking at the rest of the page (ship's manifest) and I noticed a few names of people also coming from my grandfather's town (Odessa.) One of them was a Charles Polen, whose father's name was Benjamin. Please forgive me if I am barking up the wrong tree, but I just wanted to pass that along in case it is useful!

From RootsWeb posts I think he was Calvin Wesley POLEN, son of Clyde Washington POLEN and Hester COOPERIDER, born 23 Jan 1834, and married to Olive LATHROP.

I need verification of a birthdate and place for Nicholas Wheeler who married Hannah Polen. I have the marriage permission for Nicholas Wheeler to marry Hannah Polen, permission given by Nicholas M. Wheeler, dated 02Nov1818.

I have a birthdate of ABT 1800 in PA or MD for Nicholas and Hannah 31Oct1800 in VA OR WV.

The 1820 Census names Nicholas Wheeler and the age at that time would place him ABT 1800. Only heads of household are named, therefore I have no proof for Hannah. I need verification of her birthdate and place, also.

Also need death date for Nicholas and Hannah; birthdate of 1772 for Nicholas, the father, in Baltimore; marr to Drucilla 1794 Where?;deathdate of 05May1839 in Harrison County in OH.

Would appreciate any info you can give me. Nicholas and Hannah are the parents of our Civil War Union Soldier, Eli Wheeler. Both Richard and I are directly related to Eli and thus the Nicholas Wheelers.

The mother of Hannah Polen and her brother William appears to be Ann Stoker the wife of Nathaniel Polen. William married Nancy Ann Wheeler the child of Nicholas Wheeler and his wife Drucilla. On other matters I would caution anyone using the Tatterson book to independently confirm anything said in that publication regarding the twins William and Nathaniel Polen born in 1769 in Loudoun co. VA., and anything about the earlier Polen's. A lot of Mrs. Tatterson's early info fails the indepentent research test. Inre the above if anyone is interested I'll be happy to share my source material. <Dick>

Hi Ron,

I saw one of your messages on the ancestry.com message board and it said that you were trying to find out who the parents of Joseph Polen and Catherine Scheckler Frick were. I am too. I have been in contact with a descendant of JOseph and Catherine and she says that Joseph Polen was a descendant of the Polen Twins, William and Nathaniel who were sons of Hannah Pegg of Loudoun Co., VA. I'm sure you are familiar with them. I have tried to verify this theory and thus far, I can find no connection to the Loudoun Co., VA Polens. ANother Pegg connection here is that it is rumored that Catherine Scheckler Frick's mother was Catherine Pegg (if it was Catherine Pegg, then the only one that would fit is the daughter of Elias Pegg who lived in Southern PA and Ohio County, WV. Elias was a Rev. War vet. who was born in about 1725). It is said that Catherine Pegg married some unknown Scheckler in PA and had daughter Catherine who married a Frick. Frick died shortly after their marriage and dt. Catherine remarried Joseph Polen. As you know, moved to Ross Co., OH and I have been able to find Catherine in the censuses there for 1840 and 1850. I think I have put together some children for Joseph and Catherine and judging by the places of birth, it appears that they moved to Ohio sometime between 1810 and 1813. I have also seen the book (online) about the Strawsers concerning Catherine's dt. Elizabeth who MIGHT have had children with a Strawser boy (apparently unmarried?)

I am wondering if you can shed any light at all on this puzzle? Do you know of any siblings for JOseph Polen or Catherine Scheckler Frick?

I am primarily a Pegg researcher, but in the course of researching Peggs, I have accumulated quite a bit of information on the Polens. I would be happy to share any information I have.

Thanks,

Sheri Pegg

Dick, Thanks so much for your response, I just spoke to my mother who confirmed the info that you sent me. Rebecca Arnold also had a previous marriage and my mother seems to think that Arnold was her maiden name and Marker the name of her first husband. I understand at the time she married Charles O. Polen he already had grown children, they went on to have four children Charles, Peter, Pearl and Eva. My mom says there were twelve in all between the two of them, she is now ninety and as far as I know the last of her line. She recalls that as a child the family would pool some money together every year for a legal fund in order to get an attorney to lay claim to some property in Philadelphia that they believed they were entitled to. I would be glad to fill out your family tree, just tell me how to go about it.
Thanks, William

Re: What is the nationality of the name POLEN

Charles O. Polen b 1877 in Jefferson Co. Ohio was the son of Charles Polen and his second wife Rebecca Arnold. Charles' family can be traced back to Loudoun Co. VA in 1769 to the birth of two twins boys Nathaniel and William Polen to a yet to be identified father who's last name was Polen and a Hannah Pegg. Hannah's line can be traced back to the 1680's in Phildelphia. Both boys eventually settled in Ohio and Charles line sprang from the twin William's ninth child Charles b20 March 1818 d 05 Feb 1894. As for the origin of the name Polen, it is in doubt. The spellings have varied from Polen to Polan to Pollen to Poland and Poling, but it is a safe bet to say the family came from the Island of Great Britian. Clerissa H. Tatterson in her "History and Genealogy of the Poling Family" cites the origin as follows "Ekwell, The Oxford Dictionary of English Place Names, p 352 Poling ---Sussex. Temporarliy Palinga, in the reign of Henry II, in 1361. Listed on Patent rolls - Inquisition post mortem. Old English "Palingas a tribal name as suggested by Polinga Schittas in 953. Polinga might possibly mean "people by a pole". There are also references that link the name with Robert Del La Pole a Norman French knight who accompanied William to England in 1066. If you are interested in filling out the Polen family tree please contact me. I am descended from an uncle of Charles O., his father's older brother William. <Dick>

Re: Jacob Polen OH, son of John

The Ohio Death Certificate Index gives two records for a Jacob Polen (1) d 12/23/1913 Monroe Co. OH, Vol. # 1248, cert. # 71178 and (2) d 02/16/1927 Montgomery Co. OH, Vol. #5284, cert. # 11279. Both records are on file at the Ohio Historcal Society Library in Columbus. The Social Secruity Death index presents no possibilities. I've been researching Polen's in Ohio for a number of years and have been unable to tie the Ross Co. family group into the extensive Polen Family of the twins William and Nathaniel that settled in the eastern Harrison, western Jefferson Co. area after moving from Loudoun Co. VA in the 1815 to 1828 timeframe. The 1850 Ross C. Census lists a Catherine in Colraine Twp. page 495 b PA, Daniel same twp page 497 b PA, John page 495 b PA, Joseph on page 519 (b ?) and a Samuel b PA on page. 523. With the PA births this could be an entirely different family even though the given names are familiar. I hope this helps. Dick
