My ggg grandfather, William Burnet left Tyrone Co., Ireland in 1818 and came to West Virginia and married Sarah Poling on 31 Dec. 1823 in Harris Co., Clarksburg, W VA. Her father was Martin Poling. His father was Martin Poling SR. who was born in 1708 in Middletown, NJ. Does this fit in any of your Poling lines? Mary Jo

Does anyone have the original Bonn Arthur Poland research? I saw a posting from 1998 from Donald A. Poland about Bonn Arthur Poland and the scrolls he obtained from Elfrieda. I am wondering if they are still out there somewhere.

I am doing some research on the Poland family - I descend from Amos Poland from Hampshire Co (son of Aaron son of Stephen). My dad is actually good friends with Buzz Poland in Martinsburg (Bonn's grandson - Buzz is Bonn Arthur Poland III). My mother called him yesterday to see if he had his grandfather's and father's research and if he had any new light to shed. Interestingly enough, he only has a family tree / chart - he has none of his grandfather's original research or scrolls and I was wondering if anyone has the originals or copies. It would be really nice to be able to reunite Buzz with the documents if anyone still has them.

Just wondering. I hope this address still works.

Does anyone have any information on Mathias and Elizabeth Polings children? They are Frank Sherman, Ferinan, William, Edward, Anna and Emma. I would love to hear from anyone relation to me. Mathias and Elizabeth are my great grandparents. I have not been able to trace Elizabeth. She was born in Dublin, Ireland around 1847.

There were many variations of Poling, Poland, And others. You must have picked up the Poling's i America, For Thomas Poling was born in Lancashire England in 1590. However I can find no trace of him before.

Just to let everyone here know we are holding a Polen family reunion at Ryerson Station State Park, Greene County, PA on Sunday, August 21; Shelter #2. Most of our family tree information has been compiled using the history and geneology of the Poling family; and we would love to correct any errors and/or update and make any possible changes. We are also planning a hike over to a Polen(Poland) family cemetery located in the park. We would love to see anyone interested come out and have a great time!

Robert and Elizabeth Davidson

Robert Davidson and wife Elizabeth Gochenour/Cohenour Davidson migrated from Virginia to Missouri-decided they did not want to move west and was returning eastbound about 1848. It seems Robert died in Illinois and Elizabeth and children Henry, Noah and Mary Jane moved on to settle in Ohio.
I've still not been able to confirm and verify death date for Robert Davidson in Illinois as a death certificate was not required prior to 1877. It is believed he died around 1850 or so.

A Davidson descendant in Ohio has the family bible for Robert and Elizabeth-I would love to contact them for more information. Could be with a Lillie or Poling Family.
It is believed Robert was born about 1811 in Virginia (Parents unknown), Elizabeth was born 1813 died 1883 in Ohio.

I am looking for living relatives of Mary Jane and Albert Lillie. Married 1869, children: Robert, Harry and Catherine May. Someone has the bible that Mary Jane used that has recorded family names and photos of her parents Robert Davidson and Elizabeth Gochenour.
I am a descendant of Robert Davidson. Robert and Elizabeth's
children settled in Ohio except for one, Harrison who settled in Oregon (my line).

I have an old letter from Evelyn Lucille Lillie daughter of Catherine May Lillie and Lawrence Poling who says that the bible was in the hands of Catherine May Lillie Poling at one time.

Hello,

I'm looking for information about Richard Poling (b. 1781) who married Rachel ____, probably around 1814, almost certainly in Middletown, Monmouth County, NJ.

They had children: Zephaniah who married Eliza Lamberson in 1833; Charles W. who married Ann Kelsey in 1837; William; and Ashley.

The first two children were married in Monmouth County; the last two children may have been married in Adams County, IL.

I'm especially interested in Richard and Rachel (___) Poling's son William. He was in the 1850 census in Ursa, Adams County, but not in the 1860 census.

William Poling was the sone of Patriot Richard Poling of Monmouth, NJ. William lived his life in Illinois.

I have a transcript of the Family page that show birth dates of William and his siblings. Does anyone know where the Bible is?
It, supposedly, last belonged to Ella Wharton and may be part of a museum or library collection in Illinois or New Jersey. Thanks

Parent: Dad ~ John Franklin Poling - Alzina 2nd wife. First wife with John (don't know her name) had two sons and 1 daughter Pamela (her married name was Kiger), Rodney and Franklin. Their Mom married a gentleman with the last name of Thimes. John's Mom's name was Edna Estela (Souders) Poling. His father's name was George Poland (later changed to Poling for some reason) from Nebraska. This is all I know.

Can you give me some more vitals on your Poling line? In the 1800 census of Allegany, Md. George's Creed & Upper Old town. On pg. 31 there are listed the names you mentioned. Martin, Roger, Martin, Sam, Wm., Wm., Sam, Rich, Mary. Then on page 33 Mary Polin is listed as head of household. Then on pg. 35 a Wm. Polin is names who we think is our Wm. Poland b. before 1800. With all my research I can not connect into these names.
Now I will tell you what I know. William Patterson Poland Jr. b. 1861 son of William Patterson Poland, Sr. b. 1833 m. Sarah Jane West in 1855 in Coshocton co. Ohio. Wm. Sr. was in Civil War, Have his papers. This is where my brick wall stands. I can not find who Wm. Sr. parents are. Can you help me any with this.

Jay County, Indiana and Lawrence County, Illinois Poling Picture

I have a picture of a Poling family that I would like to share with members of this family. The only information I know about the picture is that is belonged to Leroy Jacob or Jacob Leroy Poling. He was born in 1886 in Jay County, Indiana to John and Alice Poling (I believe her maiden name may have been Bechtell??), and died in 1971 and was buried in Lawrence County, Illinois. He was married first to a woman by the name of Gay or Gaye and after she died he married in 1954 to my grandmother (Cora Leib Hesher) in Lawrence County, Illinois. I believe Roy, as he was called, had a daughter Madeline and a grandson who went by the name of Bill or Billy. I remember Roy well as he was the man who I remember as my grandfather even though he was really a step grandfather. I also remember his daughter Madeline a little, but I know nothing else about the family. I believe I even have a picture of the daughter Madeline. The older picture I have, my grandmother told me, is of Roy’s father, uncles, aunt and grandparents. I would love to find out any information concerning Roy’s first wife and parents. If you have connection to this family I would gladly scan and send you a copy of the picture.

Arthur Poling B 1898 OHIO D 1988 Union City area PA

In my notes of (Harrison) Monroe Bush and Maud(e) Houston Bush I have an Arthur Poling 12, as Harrison's step son on the 1910 Census of Union City, Erie County, PA. Also in the household is Ruby 5. Both Arthur and Ruby are from Ohio as is both of their parents. Not sure but Ruby could be a Poling, Houston or a Bush. Harrison and Maud had a daughter Gladys the following year....1911. Gladys lived in Union City the better and later part of her life until her death in Conneaut, Ohio. Arthur passed away where I think he lived most of his life, in Union City, Erie County, PA in 1988. On the 1930 Census he had a wife Jessie and two sons, Francis and Harley. Harrison Monroe Bush was my great grandfather thru a son Ira in an earlier marriage to Mary Holzworth. I would like to find anyone with knowlege of this family. One thing I would like to know is if Arthur Poling made Grandfather clocks in Union City, PA. Any help is appreciated. Thanks, Joyce

Who are the parents of Frank Poling, who appears in the 1900, 1910 and 1920 census of Van Wert County, Ohio? He was born August 1857 in (West) Virginia. Both of his parents were born in (West) Virginia. His wife, Minnie, was born May 1866 in Ohio. Both of her parents were born in Germany. According to the 1900 census, Frank and Minnie were married 14 years in 1900. Therefore, they were married by 1886.

They have a total of five children, all born in Ohio, but only four are listed in the 1900 census:They are: Charles N., born August 1886; William L., born December 1887; Eva M., born January 1889; Mary, born January 1897. A fifth child; Doyt, was born in 1902, as he appears in the 1910 census age 8. The younger two children appear in the 1920 census thusly: Mary, age 22; Doyt, age 18.

Since Frank Poling he was married in Ohio and all five children were born in Ohio, we know that he lived in Ohio by 1885. It is believed that he was born in Barbour County, (West) Virginia. Confirmation of his parentage and birthplace would be greatly appreciated.

I have taken these obituaries mainly from The Barbour Democrat (Philippi WV) newspaper, and The Elkins Inter-Mountain (Elkins WV) and Clarksburg Exponent Telegram (Clarksburg WV) online editions. Most of the obits are from this century. I would be glad to share them with anyone looking for Polings with roots primarily in Barbour county WV. I have cross-referenced most of them to the Tatterson book, so I can provide information as to Poling parent or spouse.

There seems to be a general consensus that Rebecca Christina POLAND (Pollen, Polland, Poling) b. 1840, Allegany Co, MD, d. 1933, Calhoun Co, WV, m. George Washington SHIMER, her parents were Aaron POLAND and Catherine MILLER.

However, on her death certificate it is stated that her parents were John POLING (POLAND) and Rebecca MOORE.

Can someone please shed some light on this contradiction pertaining to Rebecca Christina Poland's parents?

Franklin and Charity Stalnaker Poling

Seeking information on death dates and cemetery for my Great-Grandparents and where they lived in Calhoun County WV. Would also like to authenticate that a picture passed down from my Grandfather, Battell Poling, of Franklin and Charity is correctly identified. A picture of Wesley and Clarissa Stevens Poling on page 292, "History and Geneology of the Poling Family" by Clerissa H. Tatterson, has such a close resemblance to my picture it seems likely that one of the pictures is incorrectly identifed.

I have a postcard dated 1911 from "Serena" to Mrs Katie Morey Naylor Missouri. Postcard is sent from Ohio. Postcard reads: "Dear Sister, why don't you write Mother is worring about you she thinks you are sick so Please write soon from Serena" Mrs. Katie Morey was my great great grandmother. Her husband Louis ( Alonzo; Lon; Lou) is in the 1900 census for Ripley County Missouri w/ Katie but not in 1910 census. I have not found the grave as yet. Suspect "Mother" is worrying as "Louis" may have recently died and she wants to make sure "Katie" is alright. Any help on this family is appreciated.

BETHLEHEM-Sandra Ann Poling, 58, died Tuesday in Concord. She was
born in Littleton, the daughter of Frank Sr. and Mary Ruth (Reynolds) Drouse.
She attended Littleton schools and graduated from Bethlehem High School in
1963. She most recently worked for Shaw's Supermarket. She also ran Maple
Terrace, a rooming house in Bethlehem. She enjoyed spending time with her
friends and family and camping, particularly in West Virginia. Survivors include
a brother, Frank Drouse Jr., of Concord; and many nieces and nephews. Her
husband, Wilford Poling, died in 1997. Calling hours will be held today from 6
to 8 p.m. at the Pillsbury Funeral Home, 101 Union St., Littleton. A Mass of
Christian burial will be held tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. at St. Rose of Lima
Catholic Church. The Rev. Norman Simoneau will be the celebrant. Burial will
follow at the Maple Street Cemetery in Bethlehem. Memorial donations may
be made to the Concord Cancer Center, Pleasant Street, Concord 03301.

Note: I am of no relation, but my sympathies go out to those of you who are.
This is here as a lasting memorial for Mrs. Poling.

I am looking for information about the ancestry of my great-grandmother, Cynthia Poling. What I know of her was gleaned from the 1865 MN census, 1870 US census, Dora Ann’s marriage registration, 1900 & 1910 US census enumerations for Dora, Dora’s death certificate, and Cynthia’s headstone.
Cynthia A. Poling was born about 1938 in Kentucky. She married (1) before 1856, Mr. Davis and they had the following children: William, born abt. 1856, Missouri, Martha Ann, born abt. 1858, Wisconsin, Frank, born abt. 1859, Minnesota, and Mary, born abt 1861, in Minnesota. She married (2) before 1864, Benjamin R. Congdon and they had the following children: Dora Ann, (my grandmother) born 14 Mar 1864 in Wasioja Twp, Dodge County, Minnesota, Benjamin, born abt 1867, Dodge County, Minnesota, and Charles, born abt 1869, Concord Twp, Dodge County, Minnesota. I am trying to find information on Martha (Poling)? who married James Luther Brown. They had at least one son, Charles Byron Brown, born in Evansville or Nashville, Indiana on August 26th, 1886. The death certificate for Charles Byron Brown says he was born in Evansville, Indiana, yet through written requests to Evansville, there is no birth certificate there for him. His death certificate lists his father as James Luther Brown and mother as simply "Martha" - no maiden name. Since I am just beginning the quest of family ancestry, I could use all the help I can get. Thank you. :)

John Polen, 75, justice of the peace and notary public, and former Tuscarawas county sheriff, died of a cerebral hemorrhage at 2 o'clock this morning at the Torgler Convalescent home in East High avenue, this city. He had been ill for the past three months.

A resident of 136 Second street, NE, this city, Mr. Polen had made his home in New Philadelphia since 1911. He served as sheriff of Tuscarawas county for two terms, from 1911 to 1915, prior to that time serving 13 years as marshal of Dennison. He served as safety director of New Philadelphia for six years under Mayor W. F. Hurst and for the past eight years had been justice of the peace.

Born In Unionport
Mr. Polen was born April 2nd 1869 at Unionport, a son of the late Nathaniel and Eliza Craig Polen. Twice married, his first wife, Bertha Vincent, whom he wed in 1901, died in 1907. On April 2nd, 1910, he married Ona M. Temple, who survives.

The deceased was a member of the Presbyterian church, the Men's Bible class of the church, the F. and A. M. Blue lodge of this city, and the Knights Templar of Uhrichsville.

Besides his wife, Ona, Mr. Polen is survived by one daughter, Mrs. M. P. Schultz of Bethesda, Md., and two grandchildren.

Funeral services in charge of the Linn Hert funeral home are incomplete. Friends will be received at the funeral home from 3 to 5 p.m., Thursday.

Perhaps someone out there can help me with this one. Working on my wife's grandfather's line; his grandmother was Rheuhama (or Ruhama) Poling who married Joseph C. Cunningham. Rheuhama and Joseph aren't buried together, and on-line marriage records at Ancestry.com have a Rheuhama Poling married to a Joseph Clevenger. Believe Rheuhama (7 June 1858 - 12 July 1938) is the daughter of Martin Gainer Poling and Sarah Rebecca Stemple, and is buried at the IOOF Cemetery in Elkins, WV. But what happened to Joseph Cunningham? We have no idea if they divorced, or if he just "disappeared".

"Danny" as we affectionately referred to him, was in a wheelchair (I think it was MS), and visited our church in Harlem frequently (Hood Memorial A.M.E. Zion). He would arrive in a limousine and would be lifted into his wheelchair by his chauffeur. Not so much as to attend church, as to be with us teenagers of the church. We served on the usher board, we were the youth choir and after church we would come outside to see Danny waiting for us. We teenagers gave him the grand tour of Harlem, our homes, our after-church hangout (the bowling alley for late lunch), with Danny "treating" occasionally. He spoke with difficulty, but we understood him. He talked about education, travel, etc., which were things we didn't understand yet. Does anyone know where Danny is now?
