I am attempting to identify the parents of John Polk, who lived in Burke County, NC, from 1778-1796. Most of Burke County records were destroyed in 1865; so, there is little information remaining about him. He does not appear to be, but may be, closely connected to the Polk family in Mecklenburg County, NC, during that period. I think he had sons William Polk (1775-1844), Richard Polk (1777-1837), John Polk born 1786 and Joseph Lee Polk (1788-1868). Joseph Lee Polk's tombstone says that he was born in Mecklenburg Co. NC, but that may be incorrect.
William and Richard Polk were in Williamson County, TN, in 1800, and later Joseph and John turned up there too. William Polk died in Sabine Parish, LA, in 1844. His sons Bradley K. Polk and Benjamin G. Polk arrived in Ouachita County, AR in the fall of 1844.
The other brothers: Richard, John and Joseph all remained in middle TN.
I have never found anyone in my 30 years of reseach that knows anything about this John Polk in Burke Co. NC. Any information would be very much appreciated.
