Parents of William Polk (m. Margaret Taylor) ?

I come from William Polk(b. ~1705 White Hall, MD) & Margaret Taylor's daughter Susannah (m. Benjamin Alexander). I've read some debate about who exactly this William belongs to. Is he really in the Robert Polk/Magdalen Tasker line, son of William (b. 1664 Ireland) & Nancy Knox Owen? I've looked through the board here and haven't see it overtly discussed before. Some of the information I've seen online is dated, so I'm not sure where the debate stands. Is there any new light/consensus on the subject?

Thanks!
Meg

Hi,

Can anyone please tell me if they know anything about the whereabouts of the original correspondence, which was quoted in the Polk Family and Kinsmen publication?

I have recently discovered a connection to the Keys line outlined in the work and wonder if images of the original 2 letters written by 2 Keys individuals are available anywhere. Are the letters still in existence?

I would dearly love to have a copy and not just a transcription, though I imagine they may be in a private collection, if anywhere at all.

Please excuse my ignorance on this matter, as I have only made this discovery in the past week.

Any pointers, or any information at all, much appreciated.

Thanks, Diane

James Polke Hanna was a cattle driver.

I have not been able to connect him to a Hanna family. I am wondering if his mother was a Polke who married a Hanna or if there is any other connection with the Polke family.

Thank you.

Looking for info on a Henry Lee Polk (Afican-American) from Jefferson Davis County. His mother's name was Mary Barnes or Mary Williams. Mary was raised by Lenora and Charlie Barnes (sister and brother-in-law). In the 1910 census she is using the last name of Williams, however, in the 1920 and 1930 census she is using the last name of Barnes and is referred to as Lenora and Charlie's daughter. Mary's husband's name is Roosevelt Polk...not sure if they were actually married. Thanks for your help.

Jo

Martha/Mary/Margaret Polk Brevard

I'm trying to establish the name of the wife of Dr. Ephraim Brevard, and the fact that he did NOT have a daughter named Margaret Polk Brevard who married Gov. Nathaniel Alexander of NC.

Dr. Brevard married a daughter of Thomas & Susannah Spratt Polk, according to most sources. Her name was Martha, though some have called her Mary, and even Margaret. [I have a Mary Polk, dau of Thomas Polk, who married a Mr. Brown. So Mary seem not to be the wife of Brevard.] Can anyone tell me which daughter it was? What her name actually was?

All references that I've seen have stated that Ephram & Martha Polk Brevard only had one child, a daughter named Martha Brevard. She married Henry H. Dickerson, and they had one son, James P. Dickerson who was killed in the assault on Mexico City.

But the wife of the Gov. is mentioned many times as Margaret Polk Brevard, dau of Dr. Ephraim & Martha Polk Brevard. And many times she is mentioned as only Margaret Polk, dau of Thomas Polk.

Which is it?

Thanks very much for your help!

James Polk - Born in PA 1799 - Was Deaf & Dumb

I am seeking any information on one James Polk who was born about 1799 in I believe White Deer Twp. Union Co, Pennsylvania. According to writings the man was both Deaf and Dumb. According to information I have he may have lived for a time with Jacob & Ann (Pollock) Ziebach, however this cannot be confirmed. What I do know is this man appears in the 1870 Census living in Richland County, Wisconsin. In the 1870 census he is listed as James Polk age 71, born in PA, Deaf and Dumb. He is listed as living with My GGGG grandfather John R. Polk who was also born in PA in 1797. I assume the two are related but I could never figure out how. My ancestor John R. Polk I also believe was born in White Deer Twp. Union Co, Pennsylvania, perhaps the son of William and Margaret Polk.

If anyone has any information on James Polk who was Deaf and dumb please let me know.

craig albrechtson
I am looking for the proper "slot" (family) for my John POLK, born about 1810/12 in York District, S.C.,died after the 1850 census.(It is possible, of course, that he left the state or that he was skipped by the enumerator, but he doesn't show up again.)

I believe that he married first about 1829 (probably in Chester County,S.C.),Mary DANIELS, daughter of David and Mary Ann DANIELS of the Fishing Creek area of Chester County.(Their neighrbors were James FERGUSON,James LEE and ? MOBLEY.) John and Mary DANIELS POLK had one known (to me) child, Elizabeth POLK, born May 1830, died after 1900,probably never married.Mary DANIELS POLK died before Sept 1834, as per the estate papers of her mother, Mary Ann DANIELS.

Mary DANIELS POLK had 3 sisters:

Harriet DANIELS who married Reuben DENNIS

Cynthia DANIELS who married Charles S. Ephraim was the son of Robert Polk and Magdalen Tasker Polk.

Also seeking information on "White Hall" the home of the Polks. my research indicates it was located in the Dames Quarter part of Somerset County, Maryland. It was probably built in the late 1600's and indications are that it burned in the early 1850's. Are there any pictures of it, or descriptions of it? would also be interested in finding specifically where it was located. Any help will be appreciated.
Mary Ellen Polk

I am searching for information on a Mary Ellen Polk . According to her gravestone her date of birth was Dec 4, 1825. She died as a results of childbirth on Nov 30, 1864. She died in Bosque Co., Texas. She was married to JR Arnold around 1844 perhaps in Arkansas. Census records show her birth to have been either TN, AR, or GA.

She is supposedly related to Pres. Polk's line, parentage has been given to William H Polk, president's brother, but according to his available date of birth, he would have been 10 when Mary Ellen was born.

I have recently seen census records that indicate a Evan Polk that was in Maury Co., TN in 1830 and an Evan Polk was also on census in 1840 in Madison, AR. He has a daughter approximately the correct age to be Mary Ellen in the 1830 census, but she is no longer shown in the 1840 census if it's the same family.

I would be very appreciative of any information on these Polks.

Debra Tranthem
DebraMLT@hotmail.com
allmyleaves@yahoo.com
Polk family from Louisiana

Hi my Grandmother was Mildred Polk from Franklin Parish in Louisiana. She has always told us that we r distant relatives of James k. Polk. Her father was Ernest Polk. He was married to Plinnie Faulk, and they had three children. Earl, Mildred, and Margret Dee. Ernest Polk died when my Grandmother was 9. I'm trying to trace back to his mother and father. If anyone has any information I would appreciate it. Thanks
Brandi Simms

His marrage certificate lists his name as Lucien but the 1860 US Census in Texas lists his name as Lucius B. Polk as does some real estate transactions in Rusk County, Texas but not to be comfused with Lucius B. Polk in San Augustine County, Texas during the same period. I'd appreciate anyone with any leads to the parents or siblings of his family please posting same or contact me directly.

MARSHALL, and others;
resolutions adopted deploring the unnatural war, advocating strict neutrality, in
favor of the dispersion of the Federal camps in the state, and expressing
readiness, when that is done, to assist in driving the Tennessee invaders from
our shores.

Sept. 11: The house, by 71 to 26, "Resolves, That his excellency, Gov.
MAGOFFIN, be instructed to inform those concerned that Kentucky expects the
Confederate or Tennessee troops to be withdrawn from her soul, unconditionally; and
then, by 29 to 68, defeats another resolution requesting the governor to demand
the immediate withdrawal of BOTH (italicized) the Federal and Confederate
troops from the south-western part of the state. The senate, by 25 to 8, adopted
the former resolution; which the governor vetoed on 13th, and both houses
promptly passed it over the veto -- thus BEING DRIVEN FROM OR ABANDONING THE
"NEUTRALITY GROUND" (italicized) hitherto consistently occupied.
James R. Polk

I'm trying to make a connection between my gggrandfather James R. Polk and the rest of the family. He was born in September, 1838. At different times he lists his place of birth as Bardstown, Nelson, Kentucky and other times as Clark County, Illinois. There is a James Polk on the 1850 Clark County census living with Mary and William Martin. In 1960 he married Mary Ann Due (Dew) in Clark County, Illinois. He served in the Civil War (79th Illinois Inf) then moved on to Wisconsin (2yrs), Texas, Arkansas, Indian Territory, Tennessee and finally ended up at the Soldiers Home in Leavenworth Kansas where he died in 1924. Kids were Nixon, Nelson (Edmond), Franklin, Nettie (my ggrandmother), Ellis, James K., Mary Ann and two that died as children (George and Annabel).

Any help in finding who his parents were would be appreciated.

Book: "Polk's Folly"

I just wanted to comment on the book, "Polk's Folly" by William R. Polk. It is an excellent and exciting read and I highly suggest that any of the descendants of Robert Bruce Polk and Magdalen Tasker read it. It gives great accounts of the amazing legends of the Polk family. Although Mr. Polk tends to only comment on his direct ancestors in the last few chapters, it is still a really great way to get away from birthdates and cemeteries and hear some interesting stories. Enjoy.

I am assisting an old classmate of mine with her family history, and among things we've found is an obituary of her gr.grandmother claiming she was a first cousin of both Pres. James Knox Polk and the Abolitionist, John Brown. Polk was born in North Carolina in l795 and of course was a famous politician in Tennessee before becoming President. I would appreciate hearing from anyone having knowledge of his parents' siblings, etc.

Seek ancestry of the following:

Leonidas Lafayette Polk, was born about 1837, and was the founder of
Polkton, Anson Co. He was in the Civil War, in Co K, Pee Dee Wildcats. He
was a "kinsman" of Gen. Leonidas Polk of Raleigh. I don't know how they
were kin, but the Medley history of Anson Co. states they were.

L.L. Polk was N.C.'s first Commissioner of Agriculture, then President of
the National Farmers Alliance until his death in 1892. He was instrumental
in founding the State Agricultural and Mechanical College in Raleigh
(forerunner of N.C. State Univ.) He was also the editor of the Weekly
Ansonian and the Progressive Farmer.

There is so much written about his life and times, but I can find no
mention of his ancestry. I am not a descendant, but I'm trying to help
someone related to the Polk's find out how they are related. Thanks for
your help.
