Hi

My name is Marnie Barnes. This post is my mother's as hers and mine have been merged because we are seeking the same information.
We are direct paternal descendants of William Pollard who with his wife Caroline (nee George)and son William Henry, came out on the Rajah in 1847. William Henry was born in 1846 in Redruth.

We have so far only been able to trace William Pollard to his birth being in 1819 in St Endellion, Cornwall and his parents being Samuel and Anne. He had a brother Henry who was born in 1817 in St Endellion and who later also came to Australia, but I have not started looking for him yet. I believe that Samuel was in charge of or keeper of a private school in St Endellion, but I have yet to find any information about that. Also very frustratingly, I cannot find marriage or birth records for this particular Samuel and Anne or a maiden name.

As for information once they arrived in Australia, we have a lot. My Great Uncle, Roy Pollard, sent me a letter when I was young, that was a copy of an interview that William Pollard did in 1907 in the Kapunda newspaper. His birth and subsequently his life was all detailed, including all that his children did and then more family information for grandchildren.

My grandfather was Tasman John Pollard from Tasmania. He was one of the sons of Samuel and Edith Pollard.

I would love to hear what information you may have.

Kind regards
Marnie Barnes

Hi

The William Henry Pollard that came to Australia on the Rajar is a direct Paternal ascendant of mine. My understanding from the records I have is that he stated that he was from Endellion, Cornwall, not Constantine. I dont know how far that is from Constantine.
I would love to know more about William Henry's ascendants. I have a lot of info about the Pollards in Australia if you are interested

Hello,

My mother's maiden name is Pollard. I have information on the Billerica, Mass. Pollards.

According to the History of Monroe, Thomas Pollard, son of William and Mary Farmer Pollard, came from Coventry, England about 1692 and settled in Billerica. He married November 1692, his cousin, Sarah Farmer. He died April 4, 1724. She died May 3, 1725. They had fourteen children. One son, John, was the father of Asa Pollard, first man killed at the battle of Bunker Hill.

Edward, 4th generation from Thomas and Sarah was born April 11, 1756 and served in the Revolutionary War. He came to Ryegate, Vermont, in 1787 and bought land, part of which was later owned by Horace Chamberlin. He married March 21 1793, Polly Wolcott of Barnet, Vermont.

I have information on this part of the family up until present day. Please, let me know what you are looking for in particular. As I may have the answers for you.

Sincerely,

Lynn M.
This is one of the 'lost' Pollard families. Martha Whitton married a Pollard and appears in the 1850 census with sons Charles B, William A and daughter Lusidney. Lusidney married John Hensen. In 1870 John is listed in Gordon Co, GA with Lusidney, MIL Martha and BIL William. William m Mary Martha Hunter abt 1871 and moved to Texas. Charles B m Mary Catherine Davis abt 1865 (also show 9 kids) and moved to Sebastian Co, AR and Muscogee Co, OK.

I would say the odds that this Phillip Pollard is the one and the same are high. Thank you for all your replies and if you have any other follow-ups or additional info, please let me know. Records for this Phillip are hard to come by and he is missing many cenus years. Like everone who is searching for their ancestors, I would love to source and provide documents for this Phillip. but if they are not there, they are not there. I have come across many different spellings of there last name in my searches. Deborah

Only odds.
In the 1830 census there is only 1 Phillip Pollard in NC, SC, GA in Lincoln Co, NC; born 1790-1800. Also in Lincoln Co are William and Uriah. Both indicate that they were born in VA in the 1850 census.
In 1840 there is only 1 Phillip Pollard in NC, SC, GA in York Co, SC; born 1790-1800.
In 1860 there is only 1 Phillip Pollard in NC, SC, GA in Gordon Co, GA; born 1799 in VA with a son Robert, 28, born in NC and a son James, 20, born in SC.

Thank you, thank you for your reply. I also have Phillip Pollard married 2nd to Deliah Johnson Black. Deliah's 1st husband was Robert L Black. Deliah and Phillip had 2 sons, Doc (Dock) Bailey Pollard and Jasper Newton Pollard. I have him in the 1830 Census for Lincoln Co N C; the 1840 Census for York Co S C; the 1860 for Gordon Co GA; and the 1870 Cesnus for Marshall Co AL. I have not found him in the 1880 Census for Dekalb Co AL. I did find Deliah and her 2 sons, Doc and Jasper, living with her son David Black in Dekalb Co AL in 1880. She states she is a widow. In 1870 Marshall Co AL census, there was a Miller W Pollard b abt 1793 VA, living several doors from Phillip. I believe Miller is a brother to Phillip, but can not prove. Miller Woodsman Pollard was married to Maria Worsham 20 May 1820 in Amelia Co VA. They are listed on the 1850 Marshall Co AL census. Miller is on the 1870 and 1880 census for Marshall Co AL also. There is also a Benjamin Pollard who showed up on Land Records for Marshall Co Al in 1845, believed to be a son of Miller and a Edward (Edwin) J (Jarvis) Pollard living in Marshall Co AL. This Edward J Pollard was b abt 1820 in VA and married to Catherine Johnson (sister to Deliah?) 23 May 1857 in Marshall Co AL. Could Edward be a brother to Phillip? In 1870, Phillip lived in household #316, Miller in #318, Edward J in #319. I also found a Robert Pollard who elisted 31 Aug 1861, Co C 23rd GA Infantry, Confederate, killed 9 June 1864 at Petersburg, Va in the Civil War. His place of residence when he enlisted was Floyd Co GA. Gordon Co Ga and Floyd Co are next to each other. This tends me to believe that this Robert Pollard is my gg-grandfather since his last place of residence is believed to be 1860 Gordon Co GA. Can you tell me more about John Pollard, possible father to Phillip? Any thoughts or comments on all the above would be appreciated.
Any thoughts? If you would like, you can e-mail me privately at debmarie54@insightbb.com

I do not know a lot about my great grand parents.I know that their english was not great. My grandmother's health is failing at this time so I would have to attempt to get some information from my mother about the great grandparents. I know that when my mother was a child they lived in Indiana and that my grandmother has a brother. Sorry for such a vague posting.
Maureen,

My great grandmother's maiden name was Eleanor Nellie Jane Pollard. According to our family she was born in Tasmania sometime in the eighteen hundreds. She married Daniel Patrich Chester and lived in India where she gave birth to 5 children, one of which was my grandfather. After my great grandfather died she was affliated with some sort of operetta troup that toured Austrailia and the US.

I know my mother, who passed away in 2001, was in contact with some Pollards in Australia. I believe by email. I think my great grandmother passed away in Seattle, Washington.

Regards,

Meg Palao
Sebastian, Florida

I would like to help you, Cynthia, if I can as like so many others on this List I also have Pollard family roots in VA. First, please tell us dates/places of birth/marriage/death for your grandparents, same thing for their children plus who they married/where they live and which one of their children is your parent? With this info, some of us would be glad to check records to see if we have a connection or if your family has already been researched by someone else.

Don Houk in Tokyo

Robert was married to a Sarah Lipscomb b abt 1841 in AL. Robert and Sarah had 1 daughter that I know of. Her name was Lucy Jane Pollard b 1859 in AL. Lucy married Andrew Jackson Thomas. All 4 named above are listed on the 1860 U S Federal Census as living in Sugar Valley, Gordon Co GA. I have spent years trying to locate Phillip, Robert and his wife and possibly his brother, James G Pollard. Thank you.
You are being very sparing with information to enable me to locate your family. However if Florence Maud Nicholls was the one registered in Bethnal Green, March 1896 then there is a Violet Olive Nicholls, also reg. in Bethnal Green, in June 1908. The time difference appears about right.
I could not locate the Nicholls family on the 1901 census but I have found on the Index to the 1911 census a 3 year old Violet Nicholls born Bethnal Green, with family members George and Maude living in the West Ham District. As the 1911 is pay per view I cannot be certain that this is your family but it does sound right. I will leave it to you to decide if it worth a payment.

I take it that your Great Grandmaother was Maud Pollard who became a Nicholls after marriage. Her birth was registered in Dec.1875, therefore when she married in March 1895 would have only been 19 which would mean that she required her father's permission to marry, unless she lied about her age. What is the age given on the certificate? If she gave her true age then her father did not prevent the marriage, even if he had reservations.
If there was a family trust which provided payments to the grandchildren, then this was set up under the terms of a Will, presumably that of Maud's father. Remember that then any money of his wife would be under his control as she would not as a married woman be allowed to own property. I think you need to trace a copy of this will which will give you details of the funds involved and the terms of the trust. The National Archives have copies of all wills after 1858, therefore I think you need to commence a search there.
The death of a Frederick Pollard is registered in the West Ham District Sep.1917, age 68, this could be him. A copy would confirm it for you and would give you a time scale to commence your search.

'Living on own means' can mean what you like. All it boils down to is that the person was Unemployed but not receiving money from the Parish Relief fund. He had several working children whose income was probably keeping the family going. None of the family were in professional occupations although one a Carpenter should have undertaken an Apprenticeship. There were no servants in the household, something that even an ordinary clerk would aspire to in those days.
In 1891 the family were living at 61 Old Ford Road, Bethnal Green, London. Frederick describes himself as a 'Practical Engineer', whatever that may mean. His Wife Emma is a 'Beer Retailer', so the address was probably a 'beer house', With them was a Richard Welsh, 37, Brother in Law, Barman, so it looks like the pub was run by his wife's family.
I am looking for any information about George and his family.
I believe he was christened at Emanuel Chapel, Edenfield, Bury. The baptism named his parents as John and Ellen. He married Judith Jane Slady (Sledding/ Sladen/ Slaiden) at St Mary's, Bury on 12 May 1840 and was living in Nuttal in 1841. The family then moved to Clayton Le Moors where his occupation changed from "weaver"in to "Green Grocer". He witnessed his wife's death on 16 Feb 1884. I have tried unsuccesfully to find a death record for him.

Thank you for your reply.

My interest is that my great-grandmother, Maud Nicholls, was cast aside by her family when she married George Nicholls in 1895.

By the time of the 1901 census the family were living at 31 Park Place, Leyton with an Accountant and a Stockbrokers Clerk as neighbours.

I cannot then trace them and my interest is aroused because I know that my grandmother, Florence Maud Smart, benefitted from regular payments from the The Pollard Will Trust, which I understand was finally wound up on her death and the capital was distributed amonst the surviving beneficiaries and their families.

Are you able to help with any further information?

Regards,

Sally

Re: The Pollard Family

Thank you so much for your help - it is so much appreciated to a mere beginner!!

I have some credits left for the 1911 census and have printed the entry you refer to. It is indeed my family. It lists Maude as a Widow and my grandmother florence, 15, brother George 13 and sister Violet 3. It all ties up and is clearly the correct family. I am now going to search for the record of George's death.

My next quest is to get to the bottom of the Pollard thing. Although it doesn't look like there is any money in that family, I know The Pollard Will Trust existed and was adminstered by G Houghton & Sons, Solicitors, of Hoe Street, Walthamstow. I am sure that firm is no longer in existence and even if they were, I am sure that they would not divulge any information to me, so research has to be long and labourious.

Thank you so much.

Kind regards,

Sally

The Pollard Family

I am looking for details of Frederick Pollard and his family who lived in Leyton at the time of the 1901 census. I think he was reasonably wealthy as he was described at that time as living by his own means.

Thank you. That is really helpful information. I had no idea that this option was available. Of course I would be happy to reimburse a volunteer for copies. I have written down the web site. Thank you again.
