Hello Herbert

My great grandmother's name was Mary Ada Pomphrey. Her father, Mathew Pomphrey emigrated to Canada from Clifton, Bristol, England in 1868.

I just thought seeing our ancestors are both from Bristol, we may be related in some way...

Anyway...it has been a long time since you have posted a message...you may have found out some more information by now. If you have, I would love to find out anything I can about the Pomphreys of Bristol.

Thanks
Cheryl
Burlington, Ontario
Canada

Hello Lesley
I thank you for the information and it sounds to me. I dont know how long the Pomfreys were in County Cork or if they had English ancestry. I was told that my grandfather served in the English army circa 1880 and I was also told that that was not uncommon during that period. I will try to go further to see how far back they go though. You have been allot of help and I thank you.

Dennis

Hi Dennis,
Just saw your message. I was looking up information regarding my granduncle and found out that he was married to your aunt. Your grandparents, Michael and Margaret Pomfrey, had a daughter, Margaret. She was born in Boston about 1904 and died in 1942. We are still trying to find her birth record. She married my granduncle, Patrick J. Thornton, in 1924. We are still gathering information regarding their family, so we will look up the Pomfrey's while we are at it. Do you know if your grandparents have any other children? And do you know if your grandparents came from Ireland with any other relatives? I'll get back to you when we find out more. You can email me at ba_bush_ka@hotmail.com
Talk to you later. Your cousin by marriage,
Debbie

Hi and how are you? Remember when i mentioned having a certificate concerning thePomphrey name? Well ive looked it up through my library, and it does seem to agree with its origen being Welsh. Basically it says that Pomphrey comes from Pumphrey which came from ap Humphrey (ap is Welsh for "son of") Then of course are the other forms of the name, such as Pomfrey.
Say Nicola, would you mind if i asked for your Email address? I find it easier to read messages that way. Please write me, i love to hear from you, and it doesnt have to be about family names. It would be nice just to exchange friendly letters. Ill be leaving now so take care and hope to hear from you soon.

Hi Nichola, So you're in England? Id love to go there someday, always have. From what i remember, my great-grandfather came from Bristol. Once i sent for a heraldry certificate and background on our name. It said it developed in Wales, coming from the Welsh "ap humphrey". Do you know anything about this? I grew up wondering whether i could consider myself of Welsh or English ancestery. Even Scottish, since i read that the name was taken there. It said there was a Pomfrey who was a burgess of Lanark in the 1600's. I wish my scanner was working, so i could send you photos of where i live in New York. You seem to love to travel as much as i do! Well, i have to go for now. Please write again, i love to hear from you.
Sincerly, Herbert

All Pomfret/Pomfrey/Pumphrey are supposed to have originated in Pontefract, Yorks., England. A place famous in England for it's liquorice sweets which were called Pomfret cakes in my youth. They have gone upmarket since being bought out by Haribo and are now called Pontefract cakes.
Just musing out loud so to speak, grin.

http://www.casandpont.freeserve.co.uk/pontfacts.htm

http://www.casandpont.freeserve.co.uk/liquorice.htm
http://www.haribo.com/uk/index.html

Ive always had great intrest in my name considering it is fairly uncommon. I have never had any contact with Pomphreys, family or otherwise. So info was always hard to obtain. I do know that there are several different spellings but are they related? My 10 yr. old son has now become very interested in his name, and i cant answer his questions. Please if you can, let me know any info. you may have to offer. It would be greatly appreciated, especially on behalf of my son.

Hi,
I don't actually know anything about the Pomfrey family, aprt from the fact that I am one. I am looking for some ancestors (and hopefully living relations) to get in contact with. My father is Michael Roger Pomfrey, and his father was Harold Pomfrey. I'm afraid I don't know anything any further back but I've been told that my ancestors may have come from Norfolk, and some others in County Cork in Ireland. If you can help me at all ( or if you're a Pomfrey anyway) please send me a mail!

Cheers

Lizzie

xx

Hi Dennis,

I was just looking around on the Family History.Com. I happened to put in Pomfrey and read your note. I recognized the name Mary McCarthy. I was just at her grave Monday. Haven't heard or seen any of the Rich's for quite a while. You have more information than I do on our Family History!

Say Hi to everyone for me. My Mom is doing well. She was very sick last year. But has made a good recovery. She now 84.

Pomfrey is Pomfret in England

Pontefract in Yorkshire used to be called Pomfret by the Saxons. Pontefract is the old Roman name for the village and means 'broken bridge' in latin.
There are many versions of the name, Pumphrey, Pomfritt are 2.
We all come from the same root which is the name of the village.
There is ruined Pomfret Castle and the name is associated with the Lacey family who fought on the wrong side of the Civil War...hence the ruin..
There is a website and a tourist information centre for Pontefract which will give you more information.
There are many Pomfrets in the North of England in both Yorkshire Lancashire but it is rare outside the country.
There are many places named for Pomfret - several in the US. One is a 'prep' school in New England.
People still pronounce my name as Pomfrey
because they think it is French and I am sure that somewhere in your family history a Pomfret went to Ireland and someone wrote it down as Pomfrey and it stuck.
Lesley Pomfret.
