Henry Smith Pond, Son of Rev. Billious Pond Springfield, Illinois

I haven't posted on here in about three years but would like to begin a new thread with the hopes that someone of my same line of Ponds have information relating to my family prior to coming to Montana Territory in 1862. Henry Smith Pond was born in Sangamon County Illinois in 1841 and attended Galesburg College prior to jumping on board a steamboat in St. Louis, Missouri in 1862. He ended up at Fort Benton, Montana and then went to Gold Creek, onto Bannack City and then to Glendale, Montana. He married Cordelia Kirkpatrick who died at Bannack in 1875. He remarried to Ethelia Romain and had more children. Many of Henry's children died of diseases while very young and three survived from both marriages. Mary, Marcia, and Elmer Pond all lived through adulthood. Henry died in Melrose, Montana in 1898. I have many photographs that originated in Springfield and recently aquired a handful of Tintypes that came from Henry through the LaMarche Family but cannot identify a single one. My hopes are that I may learn of other Pond descendents, who some of these images are of. I also hope to share information and learn about my family as well. I do have a website that pays tribute to Henry Pond through the community he helped build and operated several General Merchandise houses, Glendale, Melrose, Argenta, and Dewey Montana. please see my website at www.glendalemontana.com or call me at 406-465-5667 email: glendalecrazy@aol.com Thanks, Jakoby

I ran across your inquiry to Laurie Faison dated in 2005. Laurie passed away in October 2003 of pancreatic cancer. She was diagnosed in July and passed away very quickly. My sister and Laurie, my daughter, followed leads through many of the cemeteries in Isle,Southhampton, Sussex and Surrey counties. There were records of some land deals but he then disappeared from the face of Virginia's earth. My sister has not pursued this line in recent years and many of Laurie's records if they still exist, are in Oregon. If you happen to have anything new we'd be pleased to hear. We chuckle about this family mystery. Bob Faison

Alan...Many thanks. The brewery at Cooktown closed due to liquidation 1892. Alf Pond was the brewer at that time. Do you happen to know the maiden name of his wife? Also his date of Alf's death. It seems that he was the AJP, son of Peter Pond, of Poplar London. Would this be correct? There was another AJP Pond living in Qld who I expect was his son Alfred aged 3 in 1876.
Thanks again,
Jim.

Alfred John Peter POND.
Arrived at South Australia in 1876, via 'Hydaspes' sic ( maybe 'Hesperides' ) from Plymouth, ENG. Departed 10/06/1876. (list 25 of 1876, SA shipping records). He was 30 and a 'rough carpenter'. Josephine 20, Florence 5, Alfred 3, Eliza 1 and Louisa an infant. It appears he worked in Victoria, where Ross and Phillip were born. Ross died there as an infant. Family tradition says he held a brewers licence (No. 6), place of issue as yet unknown. . Maine says he operated a brewery and vinegar works at Cooktown. That must have been about 1900. He was in Brisbane in 1882 at the Valley. In the 1896 PO Directory, he is living at Denbight St, Rosalie, which was probably near the CULL family. Greaves family lived at Rosalie too. No Denbight St currently listed in that area.
Not much more to add. This is on my ex-wife’s line. Just keep an interest because of my kids.

Alan at Bundaberg
Hello Walter,

Perhaps you are able to help me. I am trying to learn something of an Alferd Pond, who was the last brewer at the Cooktown Brewery, North Queensland. He was there in 1892. I am not a Pond but researching the history of the old Cooktown brewery (1886-1892). I am of the opinion that he was one of the AJP Ponds. I would greatly appreciate any small grain of information you might be able to provide. Best wishes, Jim McJannett. Cape York, Qld.

I have heard so little of Sarah's background. Were both Sarah & Samuel first in Dorchester, MA, before coming to Windsor, CN? Were they part of the religious group that went to Windsor? Who was her father? Why did they come to America? Did they come on the same ship as Samuel Pond? And speaking of ships, it is said Samuel came on the Arabella but I have never seen him listed on it!

Hello - I am also looking for Ponds from Greenspond. Also Mahers. I have in my family two brothers marrying two Pond sisters. John Maher married Isabella Pond and Thomas Maher married Lucy Sophia Pond. John and Thomas were sons to Patrick and Johanna Maher. I am most interested in the parents and back since I do have info on John and Isabella and Thomas and Sophia - as she went by. I am trying to do a family tree for my mothers 80th birthday so any info would be appreciated. I also have a few Pond tombstone pics since I was in Greenspond this past summer. Thank you.
I posted the following message in 2002 I think... I've never found a link between this Daniel and my line, which goes back into VT. However, as I read your messages, I noticed the "Daniel" name and thought that perhaps there might be a connection with your Ponds, so I thought I'd pass it on just in case. (I assume that I can still find this reference!)

"While looking for another family line in MS, I was reading marriage records from Leflore, MS and just happened to notice the marriage license (?) for Daniel POND and Sarah Amanda STILL, 15 August, 1844, Sunflower County, MS. If you are interested, let me know, and I can give you the full text. If you know the line for this Daniel POND, I'd be interested to see if there's any connection to mine. I'm related to Byron POND, son of Sylvester and Almira WRIGHT of Addison, VT., grandson of Samuel and Esther BLAKE."
Kay, thanks so much for the information. I am especially interested in the Sam Pond b. 17 Oct 1807 and moved to AL. I am trying to link Martha Margaret Pond, wife of John Anderson May, to this family but have not had success. In the 1860 Sumter Co. AL census she and her family are next to Sam and Sarah and their family. I know this does not make them related but it usually means some closeness. Another link is that John Anderson May is the brother to Thomas Boggan, the husband of two of Sam's daughters (Sarah A. and Fannie E.). Martha Margaret was born 1827, died 1906, and is buried in Beulah Cemetery, as is her husband JA May, and other Ponds and Baskins. Do you know where Sam is buried? Do you have any documentation of his activities in AL? I have looked for other relatives who might have had a dau of the age of Martha but have not found any. Age wise she could have been Sam and Sarah's oldest child but I have not found her listed with them. Do you have census records of them in NC prior to coming to AL? Did they stop and live anywhere in between? I believe they came to AL c1847. I would appreciate any additional information and I would love copies of the obits you mentioned. Nice to be in contact with you again. We e-mailed back in early 2000s. Thanks

I have proved my mother’s POND line back to Josiah K. POND and Mary SIMMONS, thanks to a deed I found at Book X-1, Pg 199, Deed Records of Anson Co. NC. (It is a typed copy and the middle initial K. was read as an R when it was copied.) The deed is for a tract of 122-1/2 acres, and is “in consideration of the love and affection I have and bear towards my son the aforesaid Samuel Pond & for no other consideration whatever”.
Other POND researchers have posted the following info, as well as continuing the line back to John POND, b. York Co. VA, d. 10 Dec 1718, York Co. VA:

“I am a descendant of Samuel Pond, son of Daniel of Southampton Co., VA. I have been researching my line for over 30 years and wondered if anyone had come across any references to Samuel who was mentioned in Daniel's will of 1785 in Southampton Co. as having died.
Daniel states that money should be awarded to Samuel's sons when they come of age. The public records I have seen do not indicate this was ever done. Does anyone have any record of Joseph or Josiah who married Martha Kirby in Southampton Co. in 1806? I believe him to be the son of Samuel (he named his oldest son Samuel). The last record of Samuel is in Anson Co., NC in 1780 and as having received pay as a Captain in the NC militia during the Rev. War. It is assumed it lost his life that conflict.
After marrying Martha (Patsy) Kirby in Southampton Co., Josiah and Martha moved back to Anson Co., NC where they spent the rest of their lives.”
and
“I lived in Southampton county for a while and did some Pond family research. There is a county record of Samuel Pond marrying Martha Kirby on May 09, 1773. They had a son Josiah (Kirby) Pond Abt. 1778. Josiah married Mary Simmons in Southampton County, VA on December 17, 1806. They moved to Anson, NC. Martha may have moved with them since Samuel was deceased. I hope this helps your research. Both Marriage records are located in Courtland, VA courthouse.”

My mother’s direct line is:
John POND, (-1718) York Co. VA, m. Elizabeth

Daniel POND (1715-1785) York Co. VA to Southampton Co. VA, m. Mary TAVERNOR

Samuel POND (1742-1780) Southampton Co. VA to Montgomery Co. NC, m. Martha “Patty” KIRBY

Josiah K. POND (1778-1860) NC to Anson Co. NC, m. Mary SIMMONS

Samuel POND (1807-1878) VA or NC to Sumter Co. AL, m. Sarah SMITH (I have obituaries)

William A. POND (1836-1885) NC to Sumter Co. AL to Milam Co. TX, m. Sarah Alabama HOWELL (I have a picture of 3 of his brothers)

George Julian POND (1866-1928) Milam Co. TX, m. Nancy Aven TUTTLE

Elizabeth Coqualla POND (1895-1971) Milam Co. TX to Bee Co. TX, m. Robert Alison HALL

Kay Pacheco
POND FAMILY of Wrentham, MA 1600's, 1700's

Does anyone have a listing for Mercy POND, born June 11, 1723, daughter of Ichabod POND of Wrentham, MA? I am trying to determine who she married. Then I can rule her in or out as the possible wife of my ancestor, Daniel FISHER. I know Daniel's wife's name was Mercy, but I don't have a surname for her. Daniel FISHER was born in Wrentham Feb. 8, 1722. He and Mercy ___ were having children in Wrentham beginning in 1742.

Thanks for any help.

Hi Beverley
I had dealings with the Ponds of Uxbridge back in the earley 70's
Barry Pond who was Tony's brother I used to work with in the devolpment industry, I met their father on a number of occasions and the mother during a development in Ickenham which I should think was you Great Grandmothers house on your grandmothers side possibly.
I always remember I purchased your Great Grandfathers old workshop which stood in the grounds of the house and all his tools, I think their maiden name was Morgan, I say this because I still have his old tool stamp E.J.G.M which you are welcome to if it is your great grandfathers.
I have not had contact with them for the past 35 years or so and not sure if Barry is still around, I know Tony died in 2002.
They use to say that who i think is your grandmother was an olimpic hurdler i think years ago.
Thats about all I can tell you
Good Luck

Hi I am a descendant of Samuel, Samuel, Paul, and Willard Henry... pond. I am currently stuck on my Pond family search and I came across your post. I have a "Genealogical Record of Daniel Pond and his descendants" and I looked up Ichabod Pond (who is the son of Robert) and Mercy (Ichabods daughter) and it said she was born June 11, 1723 and admitted to full communion in the Franklin church, June 21 1741 this is all the information in the book. I also found, but not sure if this will help, Robert had another son called Baruch Pond and his daughter Jerusha born October 20, 1735 baptized May 3, 1741 and married David Fisher. Is he related to Daniel?

Hope this Helps.

There is no information on the front of the photo other than the adorable little face.
On the back the photographer info is as follows "Frank Lawrence, No. 352 Main Street, Worcester, Mass. 1882. Negatives Preserved."
Written on the back of the photo is "David Stebbins Pond, 6 mns. old. May, 1882." The middle name is odd and makes me wonder if I'm misintrepeting the letters.
Something like "Snip" is written beneath this.
"Mrs. Babbitt" is written at the bottom of back of the photo.

From the date of the photo and the age given, I'd estimate his birth between November and December 1881. The only close match on ancestry.com shows a David Stirling Pond. But that may very well be the wrong person.
I would love to reunite this photo with *hopefully* a close relative. If you think this David may be related to you or just wonder if he might be, then please reply or email me at avigailsmommy@yahoo.com
~Amber Harkins

Hi Y'All,

My name is Robert Pond. I have started a Y-DNA website
www.ponddnaproject.org
in an attempt to collate any Pond y-DNA information to better help us understand our lineage (y-DNA doesn't lie).
You can use the website to educate yourself on the definition and use of y-DNA in establishing various lines and go to Family Tree DNA if you would like to participate and contribute your DNA (See website for cost).

As administrator of the website the DNA information will be username and password protected.

If you would like to participate, please contact me at pondscum08@yahoo.org.

Thanks,
Robert pond

I just found this thread. I have been searching for my father and his side of the family for a long time. The only info i have is his name which is Kevin Pond and his father who was Nathan Pond and his mother, Carol. I don't know her maiden name. He lived in Ny for awhile with my mother and has family in Tennessee, a sister named Darlene a brother Glenn a Pete, and another sister Lynn. Kevin Pond married my mother Susan Parbus in 1976 I think. Any info would be greatly appreciated. I am in Philadelphia Pa but lived in Ny all my life.
