Hi from over the pond. I was born in, and spent many years there, New Iberia, Louisiana. I think my brother and I are in the Pontiff Paths book and would like to ask you if you know if any bookshop or other way to get a copy. My great grandmother was a Pontiff. I was named after her but they only found out when I was ll that mine as spelled wrongly. I used to correspond many years go with Norma Evans when she was in Dallas I think it was but at the time of publication I couldn't afford to buy a copy of the book, which I have very much regretted ever since. Gloria I am researching Himel and my ancestor Pierre Himel had a daughter named Emerante Himel who I was told by a aunt that she married Jacque Pontif son of Charles Pontif and Catherine Ocman, however in Archdiocese of New Orleans Sacramental Records it shows the marriage, but it has Emerante as Francois Himel 'and Marguerite Elfre daughter, I have the proof that Pierre Himel and Catherine Bellagarde [Juno] had a Emenrante born Sep. 17, 1792 in St. John Baptist Parish. I can not find any proof that there was a Emerante born to Francois. Himel.. Any information you could give would be appreacated.

I have found some Pontif's in Volume's 1 and 2 in the Archdioceses of New Orleans Sacramental Records if you need any of this information. They seem to all be living in St. Charles Parish Daniel Pontif married first Marie Anne Weichichen and second to Veronique Wesele Jan 11, 1751.They have several children listed in Vol 1 with first wife. The name is spelled Bopff [@Boff, Bopf, Bopfe, Poff, Popf, Popff] There is also a Jacque Poniff married to Marie Magdelaine Antoine in Volume 1. These dates start year 1742.

I have a copy of Charles Pontiff death certificate and it dates his death as 15Jul1832 and states his age as 100 yrs. So this would put his date of birth as 1732. I too am searching for the parents of Charles. If you would email me we can compare what we have.

I was born in Houma and I now live in North Carolina. In the book it mentions Pontiff's from around Franklin. There is one article about a dad raising 5 motherless children and his name was Donald Pontiff. I will go thru the book and see if I can find out more. Hi Michael, thought I would tell you what I have found in the Pontiff Paths book on Clavie Pontiff. In the book they are listing Emelie Flavie Pontiff born May 16,1888. Also listing a Clavie Pontiff born May 1890, Married Jan. 24, 1907 to Dorville Pierce and he was the son of John Pierce Mira Mire. The book is showing them as sisters. There parents was Jean Martial Pontiff born Dec. 29, 1855, died 1912. Jean was married on Aug. 23, 1879 to Marie Julie Levron and she was the daughter of Auguste Levron Marie Julienne Duplanti. I have noticed that at times there are mistakes in the book. I hope this will help you out.

Hi Pam,just was looking up the Pontiff's and happen to see your messeage.I'm not sure if you can get the book that was written on the Pontiffs Paths: 200 years in La.My uncle and Norma Evans wrote the book together.I have a copy,but packed away in the attic. Once we get our storage building built, I will unpacked all the boxes and hope to fine by book.Yes, Theresa is right they lived in Nova Scotia. There were 3 brothers and they came from Normandy.They had to leave Nova Scotia and they settled in La.My Mom was a Pontiff and first cousin to Theresa's mother-in-law Lucille.Are you from La.? Hi Pam, My sister send me her book on the Pontiff's. Charles Pontiff was born about 1732 if his death record is correct. He does not appear in the records of the German Coast of Louisiana until after 1770. Where he came from and who his parents were ia a mystery. Yes, there was a Jacques David dit Pontife on one record will appear as Jacques Pontife-David on another.A Certifirate of Death St. Joseph's Church Thibodaux,La. shows he died July 14,1832.In the Lafourche Parish courthouse: Probate Record-1827 the inventory of the property of Charles Pontif and his deceased wife Catherine Hockman who died in Lafourche Parish on April 1,1827 at 6 a.m.Augustin"Justin"Pontiff was the 14 child of Charles and Catherine Pontiff.Justin listed his birth date as 1790 on census records. However, this date does not coincide with baptismal records for any of the chilren.They had 15 children.My Mom's family are ancestors of Martial Claiborne Pontiff who was Justin son.If you can give me more information about Justin I may be able to help you.Talk to you later. Are the LA Pontiffs and Acadian Pontiffs related?

I'm looking for documentation supporting the idea that Charles Pontiff of LA, b. ca. 1732, was related to Jacques David Pontiff who m. Jeanne de St. Etienne de LaTour in Pt. Royal on Nov. 19, 1703. I have found documented records of one son of this couple, Jacques Francois (b. Feb. 9, 1705), but _undocumented_ information on a website that there were two other sons, Pierre and Charles Emanuel.

I would like to exchange information with anyone with documented information regarding the Acadian Pontiffs.

I got PONTIFF PATHS by interlibrary loan, and
am having a great time going through it. Thanks
for telling me about the book and how to get
a copy of it. I had no idea libraries shared
books! I also tried to get a book on my
elusive Hargrave ancestors, but there are only
6 books in the U.S., and no one will lend their
copy. By the way, there is a Jacques David, dit
Pontiff, born 12/22/1670, who was a surgeon in
Acadia, according to Stephen White's Dictionnaire.
Rene Jette's book also has two Davids, dit
Pontiff. Charles seemed to drop from the sky,
so I don't know if he is descended from these
people. Have you ever heard the Pontiffs
referred to as "David"? Thanks again for your

My parents are both from Franklin, LA. I have lived in Columbia most of my life, but I sure do
love finding out about all my Cajun/Acadian ancestors. I remembered a few days ago that
Pontiff was a "dit" name for David, or vice versa, and there is a little bit on a David dit Pontiff in
Stephen White's book; I'll have to check that out. Thanks for the info, I can't wait to see the book!

Pam, the story goes that Charles Pontiff came from Nova Scotia. He supposed to have travel down in a barrel. My in-laws helped Norma get alot of information down here in Houma. Pontiff gave me goosebumps! I have not thought about Charles
Pontiff for months, and then tonight I remembered
the "dit" name for Pontiff was David, I looked in a few books
to see if I could find him. So it is too weird to
get a message from you one hour later! I may
try to write Norma Evans, since I'm not sure
my library could get the book. I'm in Columbia,
SC and there aren't many Cajuns here. Does her
book indicate the Pontiffs were Acadian? I'm
not sure where Charles' family came from.

Hi Pam, My husband is a Pontiff. There is a book we have called PONTIFF PATHS: 200 YEARS IN LOUISIANA. Charles died on July 14, 1832. Catherine died on April 1, 1827. I don't find any mention of who the parents were. You could try to get the book from your local library or they could try to get it from another library. Norma Evans is the one who put the book together. Her last known address is 2211 Liberty Street, Beaumont, Texas 77701. My mother-in-law was also a Pontiff, my father-in-law came from one branch and she came from another. One thing I can tell you is that twin births do run in the family.
