I am helping my cousin's wife research this family also. She is descended from their daughter Adeline.

This family settled in Marquette County, Wisconsin. By the 1880 census they are in Boone County, Illinois. By the 1900 census they are back in Wisconsin in Dane County, Wisconsin.

I would be interested in corresponding with you on the side.

Jennifer

Ernestine is definitely part of this Pooch family. I will have to look back at my research as I think she is buried next to her father. My e-mail address is kmdcb@aol.com. Please contact for further research.

Karel Buck

Are you still researching Pooch from Pritzig? I am unfamiliar with that surname, but my grandmother is Alvina Ernestina Caroline Krueger, born Mielke in 1886 in Pritzig.Pritzig isn't a very big place, so I would bet our ancesters knew each other.

Alvina's parents are August and Auguste Mielke, born Rojahn. I believe August was born about 1852. Their son, August, was born in Nov 1873; Matilda Johanna was born Mar 1879; Auguste was born in 1883. These siblings emigrated in 1892 to Rib Lake, WI. I do not know and would like to uncover what happened to their parents.

I did recently find reference to my grandma's grandfather, August Mielke (what else could it be? they were stuck on the name!) as witness at a wedding in Besswitz 30 Apr 1875. The groom's mother's maiden name is Kalk and that matches notes I have that my grandmother spoke of a "Grandma Kalk". August Mielke was 49, so that makes him born about 1826 in that neck of the woods.

I'm curious what you've learned about your family and this area of Pommerania!

Sincerely,
Katie Krueger

My grandfather is the Carl (Charles) Pooch from Lamberton MN that is listed in your message. According to my records, Heinrich (Henry) Pooch was the 4th of 6 children of John and Charlotte (Stemitz) Pooch. The other brothers are Charles, John August Louis, William, and Frank. Their one sister was Augusta. This is not a perfect match with your information but close enough that it must be the same family. John Pooch, Sr obituary lists his birthplace as Reinfeld, Kreis Rummelsburg, District of Koslin, (Pomerania).

Hi Ester- I think my grt.grt. Grandfather married your 98 yr old Emma's mother. His name was Henry Miller and he married Sophia Brumm in 1895 (it was his 2nd marriage). Sophia was 38 yrs old at the time. I think Sophia was the widow of Daniel Brumm and had at least two children - Louisa and Emma. Does any of this sound familiar to you? I would like to hear from you if it does.

The Wisconsin Pooch's

I have just started researching this line. The person of interest to me is Heinrich Pooch who came to America probably in the late 1850's as a young boy from Rummelsburg. I think his parents were John Pooch, Senior and Hannah. So far I think his brothers were John, William and Fred. There may have been a sister Ernestine. The family also had an old obituary of Carl Pooch who came to America in 1859. Perhaps he is also a brother - He eventually moved to Lamberton, MN. What I do have is the following from the 1870 census taken in the town of Neshkora, county of Marquette, State of WI. There are three Pooch families living next to each other:

Pooch, John - age 31, farmer, b. Prussia
Pauline, age 27, Keeping House, b. Prussia
Alvina, age 2, b. Wisconsin
Edward, age 5 months, b. Wisconsin

Pooch, William, age 26, farm laborer, b. Prussia
Augusta, age 23, keeping house, b. Prussia
Bertha, age 4, b. Wisconsin
Adeline, age 2, b. wisconsin
Emma, age 3 months, b. Wisconsin
Kregor, Caroline, age 18, without occupation, b. Prussia
Pooch, Henry, age 23, farm laborer, b. Prussia

Pooch, John Sen., age 60, Farmer, b. Prussia
Hannah, age 60, keeping house, b. Prussia
Fred, age 15, farm laborer, b. Prussia
Lutesh, Minnie, age 76, without occupation, b. Prussia

The Lutesh is interesting as may indicate Hannah's maiden name - mother or sister.

I'm off to the library - if anyone has any clues I would appreciate them - am going to start by trying to get marriage records to indicate who parents were.

Charley Poch, Elsie Pooch and the orange beads

Boy, I'm glad to find this board. The Poch, Pooch name shows up with our family on a few occasions, but no one seems to know why. My grandmother, Emma Marie (Brumm) Wick of Chicagoland, 98 and a half and still of great memory, says she had a cousin named Elsie Pooch who lived near her in Wheeling Township in Illinois back around 1910 or so. She said Elsie was a beautiful girl who wore lovely orange beads around her neck. She married a man named Funke and Emma lost track of her. Emma's sister left a note about "Uncle Charlie Poch who came to America with Grandma and Grandpa Behlke from Mechlinburg/Pomerasia area of Germany" Emma's sister said Charley tried homesteading in WI but too many wild animals sent him back here to Illinois. Emma's sister, Sophia Brumm was baptized at St. John's Lutheran in Northfield Illinois in 1889, and one of the witnesses is Augusta Poch.

I am hoping something here rings a bell with someone. Maybe Grandmother Behlke was originally a Poch? Her first name was Henrietta and she was born in Jun of 1837. Her husband's name was Behlke, but first name is unclear. Could have been Gustave, Carl, or Charles. Gram says it was "Grandpa" :)

On the 1900 Census Henrietta Behlke says she is the mother of six living children. So far we have found Carolina Behlke Brumm, Wilhelmina Behlke Straub Edecker, Gustaph Behlke, Ernestina Behlke Wichmann, and Bertha Behlke Heins. Gram's sister says the sixth child was Charley Poch. Although, I don't see how, unless he was illigitimate.

Does this do anything for anyone? Please say YES. Esther

My father is Elmer John Pooch who was born on February 6, 1913. His father, who I was told came from Germany when he was 5yrs old, was Frank Ernest Pooch. Franks fathers name was John L. Pooch and his mothers name was Charlotte D. (my father thought her maiden name was Eke or something like that). We are from the Deerfield area and Frank had neices who live in Milwaukee, Fort Atkinson and a brother who live in the Jefferson area. From my fathers recollection, Frank had 5 siblings by the name of Herman, John, Mrs. Charles Schroeder, Matilda Wolf, Mrs. Carl Wolf (he said two sisters married brothers). My father, Elmer is now 89yrs old.
John and Charlottes grave stones are located in a country cemetery near Krogville (which is sort of between Cambridge and Deerfield. Johns stone says he was born in 1842 and died in 1918. Charlottes stone says she was born in 1840 and died in 1888. Elmer thinks she died shortly after she and the children arrived in US leaving Joh with 6 children to care for. Elmer said John worked 2 years in US before he had money to send for his family. There are other Pooch grave stones in the Krogville cemetery. Sincerley, Dolores (Dolly) Pooch Mandt.

Thanks for the information! I'll forward your info to my dad and see if he recognizes any of those names (I don't offhand), he was born in Whitewater in 1934. I'll post whatever he knows on reply. Good luck!

-J

Welcome to the Pooch Board

I created this board to further reach others who might be interested in reading or adding to the following family history, as well as for all Pooch surname interests.

My great-grandfather, Johann Ludwig Wilhelm Poch, was born July 8, 1878, and emigrated from Pritzig, Germany, Kries Rummelsburg, in 1886.

His father was Johann Poch and his mother was Charlotte Yok, and his father was known as Trouta Poch, apparently named for his hobby of poaching trout from the ponds, rivers, and streams of the ruling duchy of that region.

The family traveled to Deerfield or Milwaukee, Wisconsin, United States, and settled as farmers in Deerfield and Jefferson, Wisconsin. Some of the family branch surnames were apparently changed to 'Pooch' by U.S. immigration officials, and that is my last name today (other relatives have changed their names back to the original spelling of 'Poch').

During World War II, my grandfather and his family sent CARE packages to relatives back in east German Pomerania, Hinterpommern, which was east of the Oder-Neisse Rivers and later annexed by Poland after the war. Thus, Pritzig is now officially known as Przytocko. Many of the German residents there were driven from this area by Poles as part of an ethnic cleansing program in revenge for earlier Nazi atrocities. Their farms, home, and possessions were confiscated by Poland, and all means of contact were lost with those relatives since 1945.

I would be interested in tracing this side of my family as far back as possible. Many of the official records of that area may have been relocated to one of several Lutheran Evangelical Church central repositories in Germany, which I am in the process of contacting.

Please let me know if you might have any information on the Poch or Pooch surnames in Pomerania.

Thanks,

John Pooch
