Hi Robert. Haven't checked this in a while. I think we are cousins of a sort, as my g-g-g grandmother Ann Barnard and your g-g?grandfather William H. were Half brother and sister.

Ann married Charles Whitelock (of Port Deposit) and they lived in New York, but returned to Havre De Grace after they retired. I don't have any pictures of Ann, but have some of Charles. My grandmother said that Ann missed the city after they retired. Apparently she said as much to her granddaughter.

I have made a little progress on the family of Henrietta Dobson, both Ann and William H's mother. If you are interested, email me directly and we can fill in the gaps.

Barb Anderson

sounds like we are probably distant cousins. My grandfather was William Poplar. He was married to Annie Murray, and had the following children: Lida Roberta [name is Elizabeth in the census- but they say that our grandmother had a strong Irish accent and may have been misunderstood.] She had sisteres: Mary Oelita, Catherine, and Harriet, and two brothers : Robert and Murray. I think maybe from the names you have listed that uyyour ancestor James was a brother to my grandfather. You can see my tree, but I am no expert on the Poplars because my father [Lida's son] died when I was ten and we sort of lost touch with that side of the family. I don't remember that much. you can e-mail me directly at roberta.preston@verizon.net if you have any more questions. I will try to help. I know that a family tree has been done and it is at Harford County Historical Society in Bel Air. I live in Towson now, but grew up in the Perryville/Havre de Grace area.

RV rader: you forgot my grandmother Lida Roberta Poplar. I am sure she is the sister of Katie, Hattie, Robert, and Murray. Maybe she is the elizabeth that you mentioned. I remember visiting Aunt Katie and Hattie in Bethesda, they were very beautiful women, with blue hair. I even remember visiting my father's cousins in PA. It appears we are long lost cousins...Robbie [I am named for my grandmother - Roberta.]

My grandmother was Lida Roberta Poplar, her sisters were Katie Poplar Pingree, Harriet Poplar McBride. My grandmother married John Henry Preston [from the cannery group in Level], and they were all from havre de grace. They were watermen, I am sure my great grandmother was Annie Murray. They lived catty-cornered from Citizen's nursing home. My grandfather William or "Captain Bill" was Jess Poplar's brother.

You are correct it is very hard to find information about the Poplar's, which leads me to believe that we have very important history that is yet to be uncovered. I am from Memphis, TN and the word Poplar is everywhere throughout this city, and I'm wondering why? If you have any information about our last name please let me know.

I am new to this list, and just read your old post from 2002 about the picture. This may be an elder William Poplar that I have been looking for (b. about 1804 and married to a Henrietta Webb). According to my information, these two were John N. Poplar's parents. I have no information further back than William, but would enjoy knowing more about him and his ancestors. And I would love to have you send me the picture. All I know is that he was born in Virginia and died in Havre de Grace. The men in this line of Poplars were all sailors or watermen. Thanks.
Re: Poplar - Havre de Grace, Maryland

Barbara: I am descended from the John N. Poplar family in Havre de Grace through William H. Poplar, son of John and Henrietta. He was my great-great-grandfather and married Annie C. Murey in 1883. His children were Mary Olieta (Lehigh)(my great-grandmother), Harriet "Hattie" (McBride), Catherine "Katie" (Pingree), Elizabeth, Robert, and Murray. I have not pursued any information on the last three sibs. I actually met Hattie and Katie when I was a little girl. Mary "Olieta" died in 1921 of diabetes. Her daughters were Alverta Marie Lehigh (Lau), Catherine Olieta Lehigh (Strausbaugh), and Bertha Mae Lehigh (Spangler). Brother Jesse had a daughter named Grace, whom I believe was the one my grandmother used to talk about being very close to as a little girl. I have a picture (a sort of postcard) of William H. Poplar on his "new" boat, the Mauretania, which appears to be a fishing boat. I also have pictures of Olieta, Alverta, Catherine, and Bertha and their respective spouses. From all the information I have gleaned, the men in this line of Poplars were all sailors, probably watermen. On the other hand, I am interested in anything prior to William Poplar, John's father, b. about 1804 in Virginia, and his ancestors. Pretty sure these people originated in England, but can't get back that far. So if you know of anything, I would be appreciative.

I found a photograph in a family album labeled "Lewis Popla_." The last letter of the surname is illegible, but I assume it was an "r." The relative in the photograph lived in London in the late 19th/early 20th centuries. His wife's name was Martha or Marsha, and they had 12 children. Poplar was not their original surname, but I don't know when it was changed. Any information about this family will be much appreciated. Thank you.

Susan

Nancy Caroline Poplar {Popplewell}

I am doing my genealogy, and my grandma had a bible with the name Nancy Caroline Poplar as my grandfather's grandmother [my gggrandmother}. Through many hours of research, I realized her name could not have been Poplar, because there are just not any. My family was in Russell Co., KY for generations.

Anyway, I finally found in the 1850 Russell Co. census, a NANCY C. POPLARWELL, same birth year as my Nancy, [1841]. She is 8 y.o. in this census as obtained from Kyroots.com:

31 230 230 Poplarwell Albert 38 M farmer Ky X
32 230 230 Poplarwell Prudence 38 F Ky
33 230 230 Poplarwell Samantha J. 15 F Ky X
34 230 230 Poplarwell Leo H. 11 M Ky X
35 230 230 Poplarwell Nancy C. 8 F Ky X
36 230 230 Poplarwell William C. 5 M Ky
37 230 230 Poplarwell David C. 3 M Ky
38 230 230 Poplarwell Margaret E. 2/12 F Ky

In the 1860 Census, she is married to my gggrandfather, W.G. Hill, and the Poplarwells are now in the Census as Popplewells.

Through corresponding with other Popplewell ancestors, I learned that many have gone by Poplar.

I would love more info, and feel free to e-mail me if you want more info, as well.

THANK YOU!!

Susan Whittle

sewhittle@hotmail.com

My maiden name was POPLAR so I have been collecting Poplar information for some time.My Poplars were all in London England until 1920. I recently came across some information about a WILLIAM POPLAR in Havre de Grace. The reference is to The War Of 1812 and includes a picture/sketch of a house in Havre do Grace that William lived in. If you would like the information I will be glad to send it to you off list.
Good luck in your search for Henrietta's family.

Poplar - Havre de Grace, Maryland

My g-g-g-grandmother, Henrietta Dobson married Thomas P. Barnard in Harford County Maryland in 1846 and had several children. After Thomas' death, she married John N. Poplar in 1858, also in Harford County, and had several more children. I am looking for any information on the family of Henrietta, either her parents, or children:

Children: Anne Bernard b. 1846
Charles Barnard b. 1848
William Poplar b. 1861
Jesse Poplar b. 1864
Clara Poplar b. 1870

Her husband John was some kind of seaman/sailor and they lived in Havre de Grace.

My maiden name was Poplar. My father BENJAMIN was sent to Canada as a Home Child from London England. With Heather's help I do have a few ideas on who my ancestors may have been. I eagerly await news from her and others who may join us.
