Porcelain

Here's the story. Alexander and Maria Porcelain were my great grandparents. Alexander was born in Amsterdam. Alexander and Maria lived in Roxbury, a section of Boston. They had at least five children:

1. Henry, whom you mention in your message. Henry had two children, Harold (deceased) and Gertrude (moved to Fla. and never heard from by this side of the family).

2. Sidney - Lived in New York.
3. Morrie - ???
4. Sadie - ???
5. Albert - My maternal grandfather. He married Rose Brockman and they lived in Newton and Brookline outside of Boston. They had two daughters: Arline (D.O.B 1923 and the source of this information) and Dorothea( D.O.B 1917, my mother).

How are we related and do you know anything else about the Porcelain (ijn) (yn) family between 1759 and Alexander? What is your source of info on the painting and backing factory? I'd love to hear from you directly. My name is Michael Altman (Dorothea Porcelain's son). I live in Cambridge, MA. My email address is maltman@rubinrudman.com.

My grandfather's name was Albert Porcelain. He lived for most of his life in Brookline MA. He was a merchandiser for Jordan Marsh a department store in Boston. He was married to Rose[Brockman?] and had two daughters, one of whom is my mother. My grandfather was born in 1883? and died in 1971? in Newton MA. I'll have to ask my mother for more information about Albert's parents. I know that they were from Holland but I know nothing else about them. Do you have any more information about Alexander?

in 1759 two jewish brothers start a porcelain painting-
and backing factory in Amsterdam. They used the original Chinese porcelain and painted over glaze.
In 1811, when all Dutch had to adapt a 'proper' family name they choose: "Porcelijn(painter)".
Some later descendants, Alexander (b. 17-3-1851) emigrated to Boston (1868?). A quiry at the Office of Vital Statistics Mass. in1946 failed to show any entry under the name of Porcelyn. However it was found that a Henry A. Porcelain, son of Alexander and Maria - both born in Holland, and who's father's occupation was cigar maker, then resided at 1757 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston. Mass.
Anyone more info on the back ground of the Porcelain's?
