So far I count 23 Porters on my family tree. So many cousins seem to marry each other. Many Porters, McReynolds, Simmonds and Duncans seem to marry cousins. John Porter and Mary Polly Anthony, coming from Ireland to Virginia, are definitely on my tree. Even my mother's sister, Ruth Simmonds, married a Porter. There are still relative today with the Porter name. Although I haven't been in contact, other relatives have. My e-mail is bandbmagnetti@sbcglobal.net

Bonnie Magnetti

Many Porters in my family tree. The Porters, Simmonds, Duncans and McReynolds seem to marry a lot within each others families. On my tree is Florence Porter, born 1750 in Prince Edward Co., Virginia and died 1821 in Butler Co., Kentucky. She was the daughter of John Porter and Mary Polly Anthony.

I was born Mindie Gay Porter in February 1953. On my birth certificate, my father's name is given as Lawrence Joseph Porter. He was born in March 1925, but I'm not sure of the date. I understand his mother's name was Minnie and his father's name might have been Joseph. I think he was born in Coos Bay, OR... but this is unconfirmed. May have changed his name to Joseph Lawrence. I would like to know my biologic geneologic connections. Any information will be appreciated.

David Porter of New Castle Hundred Related to Commodore David Porter?

Page 233 of the on-line document "Early Church Records of New Castle County, Delaware, Volume 1; Volumes 1701-1800" includes the following text

“19 Mar 1757 David Porter of New Castle Hd, yeoman, Margaret Houston, spinster, surety, Robert Bryan of same place, yeoman, wit: William Spencer Junr.”

Also page 58 of the online document, " A Calendar of Delaware Wills, New Castle County, 1682-1800" includes the following text:

"George Houston. Red Lion Hd. Feb. 10, 1761. Feb. T9, 1761. Misc.
1.213. Wife, Margret; two sons, James and Jacob; Margaret
Porter, Ann Clark, Mary Houston; son, James Houston, William
Reynolds. Exc. son, James; son-in-law, David Porter.”

It appears to me that the Margaret Houston who married David Porter of New Castle Hundred in 1757 is the daughter of George Houston of Red Lion Hundred. Does anyone on this list know if the David Porter referenced here could be related to Commodore David Porter of the War of 1812?

Jim Houston
Re: Isaiah Porter m. Susan Lewis - MD>KY

I don't know if you are still looking for information on this but Isaiah Porter married at least 4 times. First to Eleanor Marcus in 1796 or so; next to Jane Brayfield in 1808; then to Susan Lewis in 1810 and then to Hannah Braddock in 1812/13. There are some records of sales of items in Frederick County by Isaiah in 1808. Also, he indentured his son, our relative, John A Porter as an apprentice in 1807ish. There is a record of a sale of property for Isaiah in Montgomery County Maryland in 1813. There is also an Isaiah Porter on the US census for 1820 in Washington DC which is close to Montgomery County but I have not resubsribed to Ancestry.com to get the information. My relative is John A. (Alfred) Porter who is the son of this Isaiah probably from his marriage to Eleanor Marcus as John was born about 1796 ish. John later married two sisters. First, Mary Rau/Rowe Watt Porter and then Catherine Rau/Rowe Baer Porter. With Mary, he had at least one daughter, Elizabeth and with Catherine he had one legitimate son, Enoch Porter (1851) (and they may have had as many as 3 other illigetimate children with each other), Enoch had one daughter, Mary Porter (born 1874 - died 1950)who married my father's grandfather, Stephen Eisenhauer of Baltimore. I have not been able to find out Isaiah's father's name to take the family back another generation so if you have any information about that if would be great. Meanwhile, John A Porter died in 1855.

Meanwhile, I don't know if Susan Porter of KY is the right one as Isaiah Porter is alive at least through 1813 and remarried once after Susan.
Hi, my name is Richard Porter. My Grandfather, also Richard Porter, was born in Ireland. His full name was Richard Patrick Porter although he sometimes used Patrick Richard Porter.

I have linked him to a Patrick Porter who moved to America in the 1700s and became quite famous as a frontiersman in the Delaware River area. He was closely linked with the Shawnee tribe. I spoke to a lady in New York State who is a Shawnee and she told me that they ar all Porters.

I have an awful lot on Patrick and the history of that area.

There could be a link.
Hello all

My grandfather was Stephen Porter, born 1907 in Lewisham, London. He had a brother named Oscar, born 1905.

His mother was Annie, born about 1880. She died 1918/9 and is buried in Fulham Old Cemetary. My grandfather also spoke of an uncle Billy Porter saying this was his mother's brother - thus Porter would be his mother's maiden name.

His birth certificate lists father as "unknown". However, Oscar's birth certificate has his father as Harry Porter, which might at least imply that Porter was Annie's married name.

Are there any distant unknown relatives out there who might know some more?

Many thanks
Donovan

Hello! Working only through info I've found here on Ancestry, I've also come to a Baxter R. Young who married a Nora L. Porter in 1895. Through census records, it appears that he was born about 1869, and she about 1877. The 1920 census includes a son named Carl as well as 9 other children. On Nora, I've run into a roadblock and haven't been able to find anything further. I would very much appreciate any further information anyone might have on her. I'd be very interested to learn if she was of Indian heritage.

Thank you!!

Colleen

Thanks for replying. Stephen and Susan (Gibson) Porter's dau Josie m Marion (Dick) Palmer, who was a brother to my great-grandfather, Henry Laramie Palmer.

The Porters were one of the families (you probably knew) that originally settled Mt. Angel. I've been doing quite a bit of research on the entire township (6S 1W Willamette Meridian) and who was where when.

Was fortunate enough to gather up the Abbey's records on the original sale of the properties to the Abbey, which makes for very interesting reading.

Now, what I have on the Porters is that Stephen first married Catherine Jane Coffey, and they had Nancy, David, and John Thomas (who m Martha Alice Brown). Susan Gibson first married Alfred Turner, with whom she had Permelia Ann (m Wm Miller), Lucinda (m Wm H H Hales), and Louisa (m Lewis E Armstrong). Stephen Porter and Susan Gibson had Josephine (m Marion Palmer) and Joanna (m Wm H H Samson).

What I don't have are the parents of any of these (except Marion Palmer, of course), and any of the history regarding their trip to Oregon. On Marion, by the way, I know that Marion W died in 2004, leaving some children, but that's about all. This is one side of the family we haven't contacted yet.

If you have any "family stories" I'd appreciate having them, so that the township history will take on a more interesting look.

If you want to take this off-list, please feel free to write me at pldunford at cox dot net. -- the usual substitions of @ and . of course.

Glad to hear from you.

Pat

Lincolnshire Porters

Hello folks,

I'm looking to track down the parents of a Robert Porter (born 1800/11 - the records vary) who married an Ann (maiden name unknown) and had a son called George. Robert was born in Wootton in Lincs (as far as I can find out) but moved to Ulceby (still lincs) where George was born.

The only other Porters I can find in the area who would be a possible right age for being parents are a Peter and Hannah Porter, an Oil Miller and his wife, who lived about 10 miles away in Castlethorpe near Brigg.

Unfortunately I've ground to a halt on this as there is no more data online that I can find :-/

Does anyone have any info on a possible parent for Robert?

The Marriages of Banister Malone Porter

I'm looking for information, preferably with sources, on Banister Malone Porter, the son of William and Mary Cathers Porter. According to other family trees, he married Finretty or Henrietta Cottongim in 1844, they had four children (the oldest is my grgrgrgrandfather), and she died in 1853 of measles. After this, information conflicts.

Banister supposedly fathered four more children between 1866 and 1870. I know that he married Elizabeth Faris in Kentucky in 1855 because I have the marriage record. One tree says she died in 1877, but I doubt this is correct because that information is from Iowa. Banister died in Arkansas two years later, and it seems odd he would move to Arkansas from Kentucky through Iowa. Another tree states that he married Dorcas Gaines in 1864, and she is the mother of the younger kids. I have no marriage record for this union, nor do I have census records for 1870 and 1880.

Is anyone familiar with this family? The children I'm looking at are Jefferson Franklin Porter (1866), Robert Lee Porter (1867), George Adam Porter (1868) and Martha Elizabeth Porter (1870).
