I have just discovered that I am the descendent of Captain Robert Porterfield of Yates & Porterfield. He was born 11 Sept 1816 in Bristol ME. Married Margaret Wyckoff of New York. Had daughter Mary Augusta Porterfield born in Bangor ME and a son Charles Robert born in New York. I am looking for information on the Bristol Porterfields that may be related.

Joyce Porter Young

Yes, this is Samuel H. PORTERFIELD and Jane Wallace PATTERSON who were married in Wilson County TN in 1832. Their children included James Fulton (b. 13 Sep 1833, my gg-gf), Julia Ann (b 6 Feb 1836), Mary Jane (b 13 Jul 1839), and Rufus L (b 23 Jul 1843). Eliza CARROLL is listed as living in their home in 1850, but she was not a daughter of either Samuel or Jane.

I have quite a bit on info on both Samuel and Jane, and their descendants, especially the line from their son James Fulton since that is my line. Where do you fit in on that line?

George

You have to watch out for these PORTERFIELDs. Just like the multiple John Harvey Porterfields discussed earlier in this thread, there are multiple Samuel and Jane Porterfields in central TN about the same time.

Jane Wallace PATTERSON (b. 1806, d. 1883) married Samuel H. PORTERFIELD (b. 1790, d. 1867) in 1832 in Wilson County TN. This is not the same Samuel more closely related to John Harvey PORTERFIELD (either one).

George

PORTERFIELD, daughter of the late Dr. Figures, of Nashville, Tenn.

(New York Times, 20 Aug 1855)

Mary and Patrice de Janon had, I think, a daughter named Lou (or something like), and later a son named Ferdinand.

Ferdinand m. Minnie Alexine Buist, daughter of Robert Buist and Hermenia Mathiew, in 1892. They had one daughter, Roberta Buist de Janon.

As far as I have ascertained, Roberta de Janon had no children. She was married to Stephen Glaser in 1911, and possibly divorced from him by 1930.

I'm looking for a James Porterfield from Augusta County, Virginia. He was supposedly the father of John Watson Porterfield (1855-1929), Charles G. Porterfield (1859-1916), and Robert Lee Porterfield (1869-1930). Their mother was Martha Ann Thurston Porterfield (1835-1885). I've found a James R. Porterfield (born 1839) in the 1850 census living with Sarah A. Porterfield (born 1823) and Sarah Mills (born 1826). Does anyone have a clue as to who this family is?

Re: Porterfields - Callie Catherine Porterfield Graves Alford

Does anyone have more information on this family?

James Hillary Porterfield was the father of Callie Catherine Porterfield, who is listed as 8 months old (b. Oct) on the 1880 census in Fort Deposit, Lowndes Co., AL. According to some family trees on Ancestry, she married C. Weiss Graves in about 1898. I think this name is incorrect and should be Sidney Giles Graves or Sidney G.C. Graves.

I think they are listed on the 1900 census in Chattanooga, TN, as Sidney, age 30, and Callie, age 20 b. Oct 1879, with a son, William J., age 1 b. Apr 1899, all b. in AL. They were married 2 years, and Callie had 1 child, 1 living.

In 1910 Callie Graves, age 29 b. AL, is listed in Walker Co., AL, with 2 children, Joe 11 and Estell 3, both b. AL. Curiously, Callie is shown as M2 (second marriage) 13 years. She has 3 children, 2 living. NOTE: Evelyn Estelle is reported with the last name Alford on family trees and on the 1920 census (see below). She is probably Sidney's daughter, perhaps adopted by Callie's second husband, Edwin Lee Alford.

On his 1918 WWI Draft Reg Card, Joe Williams Graves, living in Dora, Walker Co., AL, said his birthday was 17 Apr 1900, named Hill Porterfield as his nearest relative, and signed his name Joe Graves.

Alabama Deaths, 1908-1959, lists the death of Cally Alford and Mrs. Ed Alford, Walker Co., in 2 records with the same date: 14 March 1918.

In 1920, Logan, Cullman Co., AL, Ed Alford's family is listed:

Ed L. She assisted her husband as he pastored Assembly of God churches in Oklahoma, Leslie, Marshall, Mountain Home, Fordyce and Leola.

Her husband, the Rev.
I find it very interesting to have first cousins with the exact same names. It makes me wonder if Seth's father was not Patrick but perhaps a James Harvey since two grandchildren have the exact same name. I have been aware of the California connection but have not studied them that much.

Corky

I only have her as Nancy Lee Porterfield and she usually went by Lee. She certainly could have been Paralee rather than Lee. You have the same birth and death dates for her that I have. My maiden name was Tyler. Lee would be my great grandmother.

Corky

Yes, we are 3rd or 4th cousins. I am sure of Alfred's birth. The birth date is from the Civil War pension that his mother filed after his death. She states that Alfred D was born October 14, 1820 and died May 1863. She also stated that he was not married and left no minor children. He was living with his mother in 1850 and 1860 with no wife. I do not know if he was ever married before 1850 and they seperated or divorced. Jane stated in the civil war pension that he was unmarried and left no minor children and that he was the sole support of her (Jane Porterfield).

Corky

This death record was a new lead!

I have now posted queries in Little River Co, hoping someone can find the Dec 1917 obit for G. Porterfield.

It could be very possible that this is where May Sutherland Porterfield (DOB 1898) also remarried [to an unknown FOSTER]. I haven't been able to find her in 1920 or 1930 under either surname, but know she was living in Baxter Co, AR as of 1971 per a sibling's obit.

Thank you so much for this information!
-Kay, FL
MehdiFakhar@aol.com

So, at this point I could not locate a marriage license. I visited Joe's wife Clara before she passed away and she explained what she knew about the family. I have all here in my Journal. You might also call a local library in Orange Co first to see if they can find an obit with the specific death date and it may list her parents names and then you don't have to send for the SS item. If you find her parents' names I'll recheck the census for you.

I am working on a project for my dad, attempting to document how he is related to Robert Porterfield, the founder of the Barter Theatre in Abingdon, Virginia. I know that Robert was the son of William Breckenridge Porterfield and Daisy Huffard Porterfield, but I can't yet relate them to my line. Does anyone know the parents of William?

If it helps, my Porterfield line is as follows: John Robert Porterfield (b. 1943), Robert Fulton Porterfield (1901-1985) (185, John Watson Porterfield (1855-1929), Martha Ann Thurston Porterfield (1835-1885), John Porterfield (abt 1792-1849/51), General Robert Porterfield (1752-1843), and Charles Porterfield (1714-1778/81).

Thanks!

Katherine Porterfield Gray

Re: James Porterfield - Augusta County, VA (1830?-1860?)

I'd be happy to help with starting your Porterfield research. My maiden name is Porterfield also. It would be great if we had some of the same ancestors.

My Porterfields were originally from Scotland and came to the US via Ireland in the early 1700s. Here's a site to the town in Scotland where the Porterfields had a castle: http://clik.to/kilmacolm I can't document my Porterfields back that far with reliablity, but it's interesting to look at.

The earliest ancestor I've traced with certainty is Robert Porterfield (1752-1843). He was a general in the army and fought in the Rev War and War of 1812. He was married to Rebecca Farrar and they lived in Augusta County. From there, my great-grandfather moved to Farmville, in Prince Edward County, VA. The interesting thing is that my Porterfield line is on two sides when you get to his parents. The James Porterfield I referenced in the original message post is the one that I'm stuck on (and that's puzzled my other relatives for years before me).

As far as beginning your research online, Ancestry.com is a good start (after you obtain basic info from living relatives). I think Ancestry still has the free trial offer. I made several mistakes when I started (although in retrospect they probably should have been obvious!):

1) I took information from members' posted family trees as gospel - I didn't check documentation and some of it took me off into incorrect lines;

2) I didn't organize my information at first, so it was hard to keep track of what I had and didn't have. Ancestry and Cyndislist have some good printable forms - I like the "Family Group Record." Also, it's important to get a good family tree software program. I have friends who like Family TreeMaker, but I'm happy with the free LDS download, Personal Ancestry File;

3) When you're researching Ancestry, immediately save a copy of all the information you find to the appropriate file on your computer. That way if you need to print it later, you'll have it at your fingertips. Conversely, if you don't need it, you haven't wasted paper and ink.

I hope this has helped you. If you'd like, you can email me at kgray12@juno.com. I haven't done much genealogy recently, but I'm always interested in sharing what I have and adding to it. You'll find that the genealogy community is wonderfully helpful.

Good luck with your research and don't give up when it seems like all of the Porterfield men were named John, Charles, James, William or Robert! :)

Katherine

James Porterfield - Augusta County, VA (1830?-1860?)

I am looking for information on James Porterfield. He may be the son of William Porterfield (1784?-?) and Mary Jane Albert (1791-?). I'm fairly certain the family was from Augusta County, Virginia. The family history states that he married Martha Ann Porterfield (1835-1885).

Martha Ann's parents were John Porterfield (1782-1849) and Mary Ann Thurston (1805-1852), who were commonlaw spouses. Also, I believe that John Porterfield's parents were Robert Porterfield (1752-1843), the rev war general, and Rebecca Farrar (1764-1798).

James Porterfield is very elusive. It's as if he fell off the face of the earth! Any information that anyone has would be greatly appreciated!

Samual Scott also had a nephew of the same name. I guess our ancestors didn't have much of an imagination. It makes it a little tough to keep them straight. I'm pretty sure that Patrick is Seth's father as I believe that is mentioned in the Sonoma James Harvey's lineage. I'll try to verify this for us both. By the way, This particular James Harvey did go by Harvey which would make some sense in this case. I have a photo of this particular cousin taken in the late 1800s. If I can scan it someway, would you like a copy?

OK, I guess my memory is going. Here is what I have on the Sonoma James Harvey. His father was John Wilson Porterfield born 2/15/1784 in Washington, virginia. He was a brother to Samual Scott Porterfield, our grandfather. I was off a generation. So his grandfather was Seth. John Wilson Porterfield's wife was named Jailey Edmond, born 2/19/1790. John Wilson died about 1860 in California. James Harvey was born in Stones River, Rutherford Co., TN. And died in Napa, California 3/28/1901. that makes the James Harvey Porterfields, first cousins. Can you imagine having a 1st cousin with the exact same name? Sorry for all the confusion. I do appreciate all your help.

Are you sure about Alfred's DOB. I have him born about 1823. The 1850 Census has him living with his mother Jane in Carrol County at age 28, which puts his DOB in that 1822 to 1823 period. Unfortunately for us who are trying to put the families together, everybody named their kids the same names and it gets a bit confusing. I'm sure between us, we can come to some good conclusions here.

I got this information from the Sonoma James Harvey's family bible. The museum had a copy of it and I copied the names from it. I'll see what I can find on that and send it to you. They claim his father was Alfred D who's father was Seth. I believe they also mentioned Seth's Father was Patrick who was born in Ireland. I'll double check my info. Now This particular James Harvey came out on a wagon train in 1845-46 before the civil war as the Bear Flag revolt was in June of 1846.

I just started my family tree so I need some help from all who have suggestions. My maiden name is Porterfield and I have a handwritten family tree dating to the 1700's. We have lots of James Porterfields, in fact my grandfather was James Andrew. I'll be glad to share the info. Should I subscribe to a paid info site and which one would you recommend.

The Henry Porterfield I am searching for was Simon's father. I am a desendent of Simon's son Joseph brother of your Henry so I believe its the same family. I can't go beyond Henry at least with any proof, although I do have speculations. Good luck with your search. Hopefully you'll have a breakthrough.

I don't think that its the same Henry you are looking for. If I can be of help let me know.
I haven't been on this site for awhile. Now that winter is here, I will start my search again.
