Jeremiah "Jerry" was born Jan 13, 1837 in North Carolina, son of Samuel Portis/Portice.
I first found him in 1870, where he is married to Faitha/Faith Starks. He and Faith have three children who lived to adulthood: John Hevard (Mary Young, Mabel Harris)Portis, Ella V. (James) Blackwell and Nettie (William) Johnson. Faitha died about 1888 in Muskingum Co., OH and is buried at Woodlawn Cemetery here.

FIND AGED MAN DEAD ON FLOOR
Jerry Portis, 75, Colored, Dies Suddenly At Carlisle Settlement
When William Carlisle, a neighbor, noticed the absence of Jerry Portis, 75, at Carlisle settlement, four miles southeast of the city, Tuesday evening, he investigated and found the aged man lying dead on the floor. Heart trouble caused his death. He was seen about the house in the morning.
Portis was a well known colored resident. He is survived by three children, John Portis, Mrs. Ella Blackwell and Mrs. Nettie Johnson, all of Zanesville.

Funeral services for Mrs. Ella V. Blackwell, 92 of 60 8th Street, will be held at 1 pm Monday at the Union Baptist Church with the Rev. C. T. Todd and the Rev. Charles Williamson officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood.
Mrs. Blackwell died Thursday. The body was taken to the Hillis Funeral Home and later returned to the residence where it will remain until taken to the church to lie in state an hour before time for services.
