Portis of NC, possibly of Cherokee heritage

My Great-great Grandfather William Portis
(spelling uncertain; likely he was illiterate)
disappeared from his home in Guilford Co.,
NC, in the 1860s; someone was seen riding his
horse and using his saddle bags, and it was
generally supposed that he was robbed
murdered. Family tintype photographs indicate
almost unmistakable Native American characteristics,
in him in his daughters. (Given the area and
the era, one assumes that he was at least partly Cherokee,
though in my youth no one in the family would
speak of it!) William Portis m. Rachel Albertson,
and their daughter was my Great-grandmother
Emmaline Portis, b. ca. 1828 in Guilford Co. NC.
Can anyone shed any light on this family group?
