This James is quite likely Ira's father, but my last posting was based on information that I cannot verify. After digging more into Ira's background, so far there is nothing other than heresay that ties him to James. I'm at a standstill with him, also. I live in Guilford Co., NC, and as time permits, I plan to look at every record I can find, including census and bonds and indentures records, and see if I can come up with anything concrete. Unfortunately, in genealogy, heresay isn't good enough! I'll post anything I find. Let me know if you uncover anything, and I'll post anything I find.

Hi, I am a gg-granddaughter of Ira through his daughter Rebecca Jane Portis m. Samuel G. Midkiff 1864. It's been some time since I've been active in this so memory has faded.I am thinking the NA line was through Sally Bingham which was Mary Nichols Portis' mother. I am looking through my records and try to find a reference point.

Is this James that you have as Ira's father the James Portis that was listed in the 1810 Guilford County Census. Ira has been one of my dead ends.

Hello Jay! I am also descended from John Walter Portis and Zilpha Catherine Peebles through my grandmother, Nora Etta Portis (m. Ginther), who was their daughter. My sister, Catherine Peebles Shepherd(m. Schiffer), recently reminded me that the Cherokee connection was indeed from Zilpha Catherine Peebles' side of the family. Do you know anything more about this, such as which of her parents was native american, or how far back in her family it goes, etc.? I had been assuming that the Cherokee connection came from the Portis side of the family, but apparently not. Thanks for any info you might have on this.

Re: Ira Portis

I, too, have always heard about the Cherokee connection on the Portis side of my mother's family. My maternal great grandparents were John Walter Portis, Sr. and Catherine Peebles, originally from Surry Co. NC, but later moved to Wythe Co. VA. John Walter was Ira Preston Portis’s son. Their daughter, Etta Portis, was my grandmother. She occasionally mentioned her Cherokee heritage - my sister and I seem to remember her saying that her great grandmother was Cherokee. If you follow the line back, this could be either the spouse of my great great great grandfather, James Parnell Portis, or the grandmother of Catherine Peebles (not in your line). I'm fairly certain that there was no Cherokee connection on the Peebles side – and if you go back beyond James, the spouses of both his father and grandfather are all recorded and accounted for – no Cherokee connection in the generations prior to James as far as I can determine. By process of elimination, this points to a spouse of James Parnell Portis. James fathered 11 children that are recorded; they include my great great grandfather Ira Preston Portis, and sisters Sarah and Rebecca. This is where things get confusing, since there is apparently no record of any spouse(s) for James, nor are there any records of the name of a mother (or mothers) for any of James’s children. From what I've been able to find out, ol' James got around quite a bit. It is possible that his children were by more than one mother, because they are so spread out in time (his first born about 1785, the last about 1818). At least two of his children, Ira and Isham, were for some reason considered to be orphans and were indentured at an early age to families in Guilford Co. Obviously one of these missing spouses was mother to Ira Preston Portis (b.1808) and likely several more of his 11 children. So I think, but have no proof, that at least one of James Parnell Portis's missing spouses was the Cherokee connection in my line. The fact that her name was never recorded may have been because intermarriage with a native American in those days would not have been socially acceptable, and, to keep his Cherokee spouse anonymous and off the records since the late 1830’s was the time period when the Cherokees were being forcibly relocated. According to 1830 census data that another cousin, Archie Portis, found, James and an unknown spouse were living in the same household with their son, Allen Portis and his wife, Anna. They apparently lived out the remainder of their lives with Allen in a remote part of Surry Co. NC. There is an old, abandoned cemetery in Surry Co. that has about 5 graves - the only one marked with a tombstone is the grave of Allen’s first wife, Anna Reed , who died in 1848. Since James and his spouse apparently lived with Allen until their deaths, there is a real possibility that two of the unmarked graves are James and his spouse. James died in 1840 and there is no record of his spouse’s death, and there is no record of where either are buried. I would love to solve this mystery! Anyway, what else does anyone know for certain about any Portis Cherokee connections?

In my previous post I mentioned that the missing spouse "fathered" Ira Preston Portis - this is obviously impossible, since we can assume his spouse was female!! "Gave birth to" -might be more appropriate! Sorry about that!

My maternal great-great grandparents were John Walter Portis, Sr. and Catherine Peebles of Surry Co. NC. Their daughter, Etta Portis, was my grandmother. One of her brothers was John Walter Portis, Jr. She often mentioned her Cherokee heritage - my sister and I remember her saying that her great grandmother was Cherokee. If you follow the line back, this could be either the spouse of James Parnell Portis, or the grandmother of Catherine Peebles. Apparently (Zylpha) Catherine Peeble's parents disowned her, and I know nothing of her background. I don't think there was any Cherokee blood on her side - but I could be wrong. James Parnell Portis fathered 11 children that are recorded, but there is apparently no record of any spouse. From what Sheila Fischetti has said, ol' James got around quite a bit. It is possible that his children were by more than one mother, because they are so spread out in time. It is this missing spouse that fathered Ira Preston Portis, who was John Walter Portis Sr.'s father. Ira Preston Portis's wife was Mary Nichols - no Cherokee connection here that I know of. So I think, but have no proof, that Ira Preston Portis's missing mother was the Cherokee connection. The fact that her name was never recorded may have been because intermarriage with a native American in those days would not have been socially acceptable. If anyone can shed some light on this, I would love to solve this mystery!

I do have that on the 1860 census of Guilford County, North Carolina where Calvin Gurley is listed with his wife Martha.

Their daughter Mirrietta (Mary Etta) Walker was my great grandmother. I have a photo of Henry Charles and Martha Luticia dated about 1913. It's a family photo with the Wooten family (Mirrietta's family).
My grandfather was Edmond Portis Jr, and he married my grandmother Rogers T (Mae) Portis. He died around 1966 (I think) and she passed away in 1999. She lived in Molino, FL for many years up until her death. I still have several some aunts and uncles in the Molino and Pensacola area. I'd love to speak with you. You seem to have a lot of good information, and I'd like to be able to pass some along to my sons. I live in Augusta, GA. My number is (706) 790-5239.

Hi Roberta,

Thanks for responding to my email. I don't remember the year that Edward was born. I do know that his wife's name was Bernice. She was also from Louisiana. I believe they had 7 children (3 girls and 4 boys). I have a feeling your husband's mother or father is one of the children of Edward.

I have been trying to get information on the Vanorsby name and I have been running into a brick wall. The family settled in Chicago.

Please stay in touch.

Evelyn
William Jefferson Portis, b. 1814, GA

To Descendants of William Jefferson Portis, b. 1814, GA:
I have written and published "Looking Back, Nebraska Lessons and Legacies," about the Portis and Marcum families, 1700s to 1947. William Jefferson's son was the father of Silas McDonald Portis. Silas McDonald's son, Silas Leonard, married Cynthia Elizabeth Marcum. They were my grandparents. The book is available on amazon.com or email me and I'll send a copy!

Hi William,
My name is Pat Jackson, and i'm trying to find my mothers family. i know very little about her family as she never spoke of them. What i do know is that her maiden name was Dorcas Louise Portis, she was born in StoneWall Mississippi. Her Father name was Henry Portis and her mothers name was Annie Lee Portis. She had a brother name Murdock Kenton and a sister name but i can't remember her name. Dose any of these name ring a bell with you? I would appreicate any help in locating her family. Thank you
