Victor John Porto
LUTHER FOREST — Victor John Porto, 82, of Luther Forest in Malta died peacefully at Saratoga Hospital on Friday, Nov. 27, 1998.
Born in Brooklyn, he was the son of Ignazio and Elizabeth Porto of Huntington, Long Island. Victor lived on Long Island for most of his life until moving upstate in 1976 and to Malta in 1984.
He was a United States Army veteran of World War II and served under General Patton in the European theatre, receiving several meritorious citations as a first lieutenant.
Mr. Porto worked as regional manager of Hill's Supermarkets on Long Island and as gift shop manager at Ponytales in the Saratoga Racecourse.
He was an avid sports fan, especially devoted to the New York Yankees. He loved gardening and woodworking as well as horseracing, family trips to Atlantic City, Foxwoods, Turning Stone and Broadway plays in New York City.
He was a devoted husband for 55 years to Eve Ann, and father to his sons, Victor of Delhi, Stephen of Saratoga Springs, and daughters, Kathleen (Kacy) Schaffer of Stony Brook, Long Island and Jane Fratelli of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
He is survived by his brothers, Albert of Farmingdale, Long Island and Charles of Greenlawn, Long Island; nine loving grandchildren, Ian, Kimberly, Alyssa, Rebecca, Cameron, Thomas, Francesca, Andrew and Sicily as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Mr. Porto was predeceased by his brothers, John and Salvatore, and sisters, Blanche, Josephine and Frances.
Calling hours were held on Sunday at Bryant Funeral Home in Setauket. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. James Roman Catholic Church in Setauket. Burial with full military honors will be in Veteran's National Cemetery in Calverton.
