Catherine Hawkins Posey b. W.VA d.?

I'm trying to find out what happened to Catherine Hawkins Posey B. 1853 W.VA. July 05, 1873 in Marietta, OH she married Alexander Posey b. 1808. They had 2-children Catherine Isabelle b. 1873 & Alexander David b. 1874. Alex b. 1808 died March 29, 1882 in Little Muskingsum, Washington County, OH. I know what happened to both of the children but I don't know if Catherine remarried or lived with family members. The 2-children were only about 7 & 8-years old. Catherine is not buried in Oak Grove Cemetery, OH. Alexander's first 2-wives are buried there.
Catherine's parents were Caleb C Hawkins b. 1822 W.VA & Christina Bush b. 1834 PA

Lain W Posey 1828-1870

Lain W Posey b.1828 in Warrick Co., IN. d.5Mar1870 Wabsh Co., IL
m. Permelia Jane Hanks 9May1850 in Warrick Co, IN.

Does anyone know what the middle intial "W" stands for? Could it be William?

I am trying to track down a death date for one of their children. James Butler Posey. He was born 19May1964 in Wabash Co.IL. Family tradition has that he died in Chicago, date unknown. I have a death certificate for a James Posey that died in Cook County on 11Dec1948. The 'informant' for the certificate was 'hospital records'. Apparently he had no family in the area. Because there was no real informant the information is very sparse. Most of the information that is listed is a match although much is listed as 'unknown'.
Single white male - age 84. That all matches
Birthdate/birthplace - unknown. No help
Mother - unknown. No help
Father - William Posey. Doesn't match....unless his father was Lain William Posey.

Anyone with any input?

Thanks, Ron Hanks

In 1900, Bessie May Posey & Salter Curtis Haynes were in Militia District 481, Godfrey (East Part), Bibb, Georgia. Ten years, six children later, still living in Macon. BTW, 1900 census transcription of her name is incorrect (shows Jessie). Also, she was not mulatto but white...another error...the W's looked like M's. Two more children born to Salter and Bessie May, my father George William in 1911 and Willie Dee in 1916. Her death was between 1916 and 1920 because in 1920 Salter had remarried his former housekeeper, Carrie Nuttall. My father told me his mother died when he was around nine years old, around 1919. I cannot find evidence of her death either.

My gfather Salter Curtis Haynes married Bessie May Posey in 1897. This is in 1910 census. She was born 1882, died 1920. Father had told me his grandmother was Cherokee so I've been trying to find his mother BM Posey's mother's maiden name. 1900 census also shows a Wm Posey boarding w/ the Haynes, train fireman. Thought that may help me but got nowhere. 1910 census, they are still married but my father George was not born until 1911. I cannot get farther back than 1900 census with Bessie May Posey-Haynes. One of their children was named Bessie May, and I know her maiden name was Posey.

There are Dents throughout the Poseys and Milsteads, but I am the great neice of Augustus Posey (Chauncey Augustus).
I asked my mother about the name "Chauncey" and she said it was the first time she had heard it, as well. His middle initial is "C", so perhaps that is what it stands for. I thought his wife was Dolly Jenkins. The 1930 Census has her listed as Edith -- quite a puzzle.

This is the first time I have ever heard of Uncle Gusty as Chauncy Augusta. Just before my grandfather, Charles Henry Posey (Uncle Gusty's baby brother) died, he went to New Jersey to visit neices and nephews, They were expecting an old man, but instead they met their uncle who was close to their age. Imagine their surprise. He got a big kick out of that! My grandfather was only 69 when he died on Aug 1, 1966, a day that I consider one of my saddest. He was only 12 or 13 when his mother died and was rasied by older siblings. My grandmother Elsie Virginia Milstead -- a second cousin -- remembered falling in love with him when he was 13. They were married when he was 19 and she 20. I look forward to hearing from you -- my mother (Mildred Lillian Posey Ashurst) would love to know more about Uncle Gusty's children. My Mom is nearly 89 and takes a keen interest in genealogy, certainly as it pertains to her own family.
By the way -- I might be able to help a little with Richard Posey, and I certainly know a great deal about the Milsteads -- we have a reunion the lasat Saturday in July at Chicamuxen Methodist where all the good Milsteads are buried!
Sharon Ashurst
Ella:
I only have 11 and I believe the information I have is correct as I got it from my grandparents -- Charles Henry Posey and Elsie Virginia Milstead Posey. Please fo write and lets compare. By the way Our GGrandmother was Ella Elizabeth -- Mike Mazzeo go this wrong back in the 70's and everyone has copied him. Land records and tombstone (erected by Hugh) reflect Ella Elizabeth. Also Hugh died in 1926 not 1916 - another of Mikde's mistakes. My Mom remembers her grandfather very well -- and she was born in 1920, nine months after her brother Hugh Perry Posey (II) died.
I also live in Manassas.

Hugh Allen Montgomery is in my line. A book in my possession written by a relative has Hugh and Drucilla with four children: James Edgar, Mary Alabama, James Posey and Robert Webster. A note on the page reads: "Shooks Chapel Methodist Church and Cemetary are located a few miles east of Sulphur Springs [Hopkins County, Texas] and founded in the late 1880's. Paralee Posey Montgomery's marker was a small homemade one but is now a pile of pieces (book was published in 2001). It seems to be among one of the first in this cemetary. Maybe, they were charter members of this church and lived nearby." Love to share more information.

Monty

I will reply to my reply and to a reply up the line. I believe the General of the CSA you are referrring to is Carnot Posey. Ben Lane Posey and Carnot Posey share the same first ancestor to come to America, Francis Posey, about 1640. Cooincidentally, Ben Lane married Lula Posey who he was distantly related to as a cousin five generations back. That same ancestor, John Posey, who lived in revolutionary times, is a direct ancestor of Brigadier Carnot Posey, the youngest General of the CSA at 21 or 22 years old. So Ben Lane and he were cousins in law five times removed. The complexities of southern families never cease to amaze me. Ben and Lula are my Paternal Maternal Great Grandparents. I am still searching for why Ben Lane was court martialed in Feb, 1865. It was over something that happened in the Battle of Atlanta.

We really need more Posey males to test. FTDNA is offering a special until the end of July. Now would be a great time to get it done. I'll be glad to call you or e-mail you with more info.
Hezekiah Posey is my 5th great grandfather. He fought in the Revolution and the War of 1812. His Revolutionary War Pension application lists him as a professor of religion and many of the names he gave as witnesses were listed to be ministers. If at all possible, could you please send me a scanned copy of this? His decendants are very musical with both my grandfather and my grand uncle singing in gospel quartets and groups. My grand uncle, Troy Posey, even sang for a brief time during the war with The Statesmen.
