Hazel Green Woman Buried at State Line Cemetery
FAYETTEVILLE, Tenn., May 17 – Funeral services for Mrs. Eliza Hill Posey, 59, who died Tuesday at her home near Hazel Green, were conducted this afternoon at the State Line Missionary Baptist Church, of which she was a member, by the Rev. J. D. Counts of Flintville. Burial was at State Line Cemetery.
Her husband, William R. Posey, died 15 years ago.
Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Lonnie Horney, Mrs. Ella Ashworth, both of Huntsville, Ala.; Misses Stacey and Esther Posey, of Hazel green; six sons, Floyd, Albert, A.C., Robbie, Thurman and Clifford Posey of Hazel Green; two sisters, Mrs. C. C. Henderson, Birmingham, Ala., and Mrs. George Mason, Hazel Green, Ala.; two brothers, Gray and Bryson Hill.

I looking for information regarding my Great-
Grand-Mother, Nancy Posey. I do not have any information where she was born, but did marry my Great-Grand-Father Peter Presely Proffer in 1890 in Sadler, Grayson Co., Texas on 12 Nov. 1890. My Grand-Father; Jesse Marion Proffer, was b. 05 Apr. 1892. Peter P. Proffer left my Nancy and took my Grand-Father, once he found out about Nancy's former husband getting out of prison (do not know his name). She remarried a Posey and may have moved to OK. The only family information that is know; she was full blood Indian, Posey and her had numberous childern, she owned a boarding house (OK or TX) and Posey and/or her son's worked in the oil fields. My Grand Father saw her as a grown man, about 1920, but I do not know where in OK or TX. I have not been able to find her in anywhere other than her marriage to P.Proffer in Sadler, Grayson Co., Texas in 1890 and the birth of my granfather in 1892.. Would love to chat with you about her and her extended Posey family.

Pickens had a brother: Mark M. Posey b 1832, married Frances, at least a dau. (Sarah E. born 1860.

Pickens served in the 14th SC Infantry and was buried in Graniteville, SC.

Marshal Posey b 1825 was a relative as well.He was born in Graniteville, SC Moved to Alachua Co., FL in 1870's.

South Carolina; married 1838 to James Cook (7 Feb 1799-4 Nov 1858 South Carolina). He and she are direct ancestors of my husband, but I cannot find ANYTHING past this couple! Was she a SC Posey? Since they named a son Adren Ford POSEY, we wonder if her maiden name might have been FORD. Soes anyone know. The POSEY family came to TX from Troup Co., GA.

born 03 Feb 1895 in Texas, and died 03 Aug 1963 in Oklahoma. He married Manilla Ligon on 18 Nov 1913 in Keller, Carter County, Oklahoma. She was born 25 May 1898, and died 28 Sep 1967 in Oklahoma.

Both Ward and Manilla (Ligon) Posey are buried in the Hewitt Cemetery, located in Carter County, Oklahoma.

My 2nd great grandparents are buried at Trinity cemetery in Dekalb County, Alabama, Thomas Brooks and Mattie (Posey) Brooks. It looks like Mattie's parents are buried right beside her, Humphrey Posey and Rebecca Posey (last name unknown) my 3rd great grandparents. On Humphrey's headstone there are no born or death dates but it has CO. G, 30 GA INF, CSA (Company G, 30th Georgia Infantry CSA) and a Civil War Marker - Iron Cross beside his headstone. On Rebecca's headstone all it had was 1836 - 1916. I have a good feeling this is Mattie's parents because this is the only Posey's in the whole cemetery and they are buried right beside Mattie Posey Brooks. If this is right this is the only daughter I have for Humphrey and Rebecca Posey. I have pictures of their graves and information on Thomas Brooks and Mattie Posey family. Willing to share information. Thanks

I'm researching my great-great-great grandfather William H. Posey, born 11-16-1832 or 1833 in Union District, S.C. I know that his parents were James Garlye and Rhoda Evans Posey, and they moved to Burleson Co. Texas somewhere around 1851. He married Isabella Addison and relocated to Brown Co. Mr. Posey served under the Comissary Dept. for the Conferate States during the Civil War, driving cattle and supplying beef to the Confederate Army. The information I am searching for actually has to do with his great grandfather who served the whole eight years of the American Revolution. I cannot seem to find a name or any dates that confirm this. All I have is an excerpt from a perodical that appears to be what I think may be a mini-biography, written by his daughter Cora Posey. I posted messages about this puzzle last year. Lately, I've gotten in touch with a first-cousin-once-removed who has done extensive genealogical research for years. She believes that Jesse B. Posey (who married Mary Ann Silvey, and whose father went by "Zeke"), Lorenzo Dow Posey (who married Lucinda Lofton), and Meranda Posey were all children of the Hezekiah Posey who was in Carroll County, GA in the 1830 census and his wife Celia "Cealey" Jones, and who had a brother named Daniel. Hezekiah was the son of the Hezekiah born in Port Tobacco, MD, the Revolutionary War soldier. My cousin believes she has good support for this, so I hope that the mystery is solved!

Has anyone found records regarding Hezekiah's binding of Lorenzo to Dudley Lofton (Lucinda's cousin)?

Nathaniel W. Posey in Tishomingo Co, Mississippi

Does anyone know where this Nathaniel Posey, born abt 1852 AL, came to Tishomingo Co, MS from? By 1880 Tishomingo Co, MS Census he was in HH of WH Shackleford as a laborer. He supposably died in 1882 and is buried at Palestine Cemetery in Tishomingo County, MS. There are tales about his being bitten by snakes many times, dying by snakebite, and snakes often being found on his grave. It would seem that he was the Nathaniel Posey in Coosa County, Ala but that Nathaniel shows up in Ala with wife and children, after this one was supposed to have died. It is said that the 1880 Tishomingo Co,MS Nathaniel Posey, was married about 2 weeks before he died, to the boss's, W.H. Shackleford's, sister-n-law! Anyone ever heard of this Nathaniel Posey?

Looking for unknown HUFFMAN who married Elizabeth POSEY in the late 1700s. They had two children: ADAM HUFFMAN and SALLY (sarah) HUFFMAN. HUFFMAN died and Elizabeth remarried to Robert Sidney ADAIR. They moved to Pendleton District, SC in the late 1700s. Robert was killed by Tories and/or Indians as he was returning home after the surrender of Cornwallis.

Mary Frances filed for divorce in 1919, and disappeared. She was never seen again.. Her children ended up in BAPTIST CHILDREN'S HOME in Jackson Mississippi..

In several Census reports I found Joseph J. Posey married to Lillian Rose. Everything fits, right children, ages everything, except, Her name was "Aurelia". Every other record it's Aurelia, never Lillian. Can anyone explain this? Her first daughters name is Lillian. humm strange don't you think?

I'm trying to find out more about my mother's heritage. Her name is Linda Margaret Posey (born 1950). She had two brothers, William (still living) and Larry (died 1990).
My grandfather's name is Edsel Posey.
His father's name was Singleton Posey and his mother's name was Winnie Morrison. She had a twin named Minnie.
My grandfather cannot tell me much, except his grandmother was full Native American (believed Cherokee). Her last name was possible Wills, Willis, or Williams.
I hope to find out more information and would appreciate any leads.

in the 1900 US Fed. Cen. as being born in Sept 1874, but in the SS Death Index as born 27 Apr 1875. He was married to Adelaid (unknown maiden surname)
They had 2 sons and 1 daughter. Alexander's youngest son William Henry Posey b.11 June 1915 d.2 May 1976. William Married Alma Ruth Honeycutt. They had 3 children Lisa Adelaid, Arlin Ernest & William David Posey. Technically these are my half aunts and uncles. Alma had 3 other children in a pervious marriage, Michael Dwayne (my father), Richard Eugne and James Randall Barnard.

John Posey b 1711[the 3rd in a line of Johns] of Charles Co. MD m Elizabeth Maddox [or perhaps Mary Perry] c 1742 had children: John, Joseph, Hezekiah, Thomas, Richard, Edward [and Elizabeth - my contribution from an analysis of a Rev. War Pension application by Mordecia Millar].

There is apparently no source data to support the parentage of these Poseys. We know that these Posey siblings are found in SC during the Rev. War. We know that at least one, Hezekiah, was born in Charles Co., MD in1751 [from his pension appplication], but nothing of how they got to SC [except for Elizabeth who married Robert Adair in 1774 and removed from VA to SC during the war]. Did they reside briefly in the Augusta, VA area where Thomas [sometimes also attached to the family] had a saddle shop?

This is a critical connection for many descendants of these SC Poseys, but my investigation so far only leads to vague memories of the source or the questionable reference,"The Posey Family in America". I do not have that book and would welcome any information from that book regarding their sources. I hope this query is resolved with some solid source information.

This posting isn't meant to criticize any particular family construction. I personally believe that the SC Poseys are likely the children of John Posey b1711 and Elizabeth Maddox due to names found within that and subsequent generations. But, does anyone have anything beyond that?

Posey/Berryhill Creek Indian Connection

In doing research for my half brother, who is a Berryhill, I came across a connection to the Posey's- This Posey line was born of Nancy Berryhill and Bennett Posey, Jr.- Nancy is the one desended from the Creek Indians. Her grandmother and greatgrandmother on her father's side were both Creek Indians. Many of the descendants of Bennett and Nancy eventually moved to Limestone County and were buried there (according to information I came across). Info is available through Rootsweb searches. Searching for information on Lafayette Rollins, born 2 Mar 1854, near Coopers Stations AL; died 4/16/1929, son of Esther Posey (Rollins). Lafayette married Della Reese Nelson. Lafayette owned several lumber mills and a railroad switch in Rollins, a tiny community in Autauga County, AL He moved his family from Rollins to Montgomery, renting the house that later became "The Blue Moon Inn" (formerly one of Montgomery's finest restaurants). He eventually built a house on Highland Avenue. While I have information on the Posey's, I am at a dead end on Lafayette's father.

My g-grandmother was Lessie May Posey, she was born in Alabama about 1880. She married Lucian Gleary Gooding. Lessie's parents were John Franklin Posey, born in 1861 in GA and her mother was Alberta born in 1860 in AL. Alberta's mother's name may have been Charlotte McDonald but I do know both her parents were born in SC.
John Franklin Posey's parents were both born in GA.

I have been researching Oliver M Posey. I traced him through 1880 in either Franklin Co Tn or Jackson Co Al. In 1870, I cannot find them. I have information that one of his daughters married Jesse Putman. In 1860, the writing is hard to read on the female b around 1857. In 1874, she is married. I believe Oliver died in 1888.

I have Tom Posey from Texas linked to a Geo W. born in Texas but that is as far as I have it. The Geo W. has his father listed from La. in the 1910 census but can't make out where his mom is from. Every thing I find lists them as white but family says he is Choctaw.

Henry W. POSEY of Baldwin County, born about 1820, married Louiza C. DANIELL on 24 Jan 1847 in Baldwin County, GA. They are in the 1850 census, with two sons, Fernando (shown as F), 2, and Henry A., 1. There is a possibility that Bright Damascus POSEY, b. abt 1854, was also their son. In 1870 Baldwin County, Damascus is 16, living in the home of Leonidas CALLAWAY, brother of John Francis Marion, Louiza's second husband.

Louiza C. Daniell POSEY married second, John Francis Marion CALLAWAY, born about 1823 in Georgia. The wedding date has not been found but they are in the 1880 census of Baldwin County, GA with six children, ages 6 to 18. Both are buried in the Black Springs Baptist Church Cemetery in Baldwin County. The cemetery index for the Black Springs Baptist Churchyard, Baldwin County, shows: 523 Louisa C. Daniell Calloway b 1831 Insc: w/o John F. Calloway and 524 John F. Calloway (No dates given.)

If anyone finds has found any of these families or individuals in 1860 or 70 censuses, or has other information on them, please let me know.

Of particular interest is finding Bright Damascus POSEY, abt 6 years old, in the 1860 census. He is thought to be in Baldwin County, Georgia, but then, not necessarily.
