Nikolaus Poss *1827 in Ernzen, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany

I need help from all you POSS researchers. I am looking for Nikolaus Poss *1827 in Ernzen/Germany, who emmigratet 1854 to America. I have found him on the following biography from Der Carroll Demokrat, a German-language newspaper published in Carroll, Iowa, between about 1874 and 1920:

Mr. Nickolaus Poss is a very old settler of Carroll County who is connected to a part of the county’s history and who is admired and respected among all his acquaintances as quite an honorable man. He was born on 6 December 1827 at Ernzen, near Trier, Germany. He spent his youth and attended elementary school in his home village, after which he devoted himself to the occupation of agriculture and gained practical experience working on his parents’ farm. In 1850, he carried out his long-held plan to emigrate to the free country of America. At first, he went to Tiffin, Ohio, where he found work on the railroad and remained until the following spring. After this, he worked for a time on a farm, and then moved to Freeport, Illinois, then to Dubuque, Iowa, and then to Galena, Illinois. He worked eight years in Illinois, and then moved to Wisconsin where he remained four years. In 1864, near the end of the Civil War, he was conscripted as a soldier and was assigned to the troops manning the forts around Washington. After peace was reestablished in 1865, he was honorably discharged and moved to Black Hawk County, Iowa, where he again took up farm work and remained four years. In 1869, he came to Kniest Township, Carroll County, where he purchased a 160-acre parcel of land. Later, he sold this property and, in the same township, purchased a 200-acre farm of the best land which he equipped with good, solid buildings. On 6 October 1875, he married Miss Margaretha Grossmann. This happy and Christian marriage produced four children, all of whom, however, died at a young age. In the spring of 1866 (1886???), he and his wife moved to the town of Carroll and purchased a pretty house with a garden close to Saints Peter and Paul Church where they might lead a more tranquil life and enjoy the fruits of their hard but prosperous work. After the couple had lived here happily for eight years, Mr. Poss suffered the greatest loss of his life when his dear companion passed away on 12 October 1895. It was a hard blow for the old gentleman, but he retains the comfort and compassion of his friends and the respect and affection of all his acquaintances.
NOTES: The town of Ernzen is in the far western part of Germany, about 10 to 15 miles northwest of Trier and just north of the Luxembourg border. There is also a town called “Enzen” a few miles farther north.

I can't find anything out about him. Has anyone further informations? Have a look to my ancestors on my homepage http://www.diemetze.de

Thanks.

George/Mary POSS of St. Louis, MO & McLeansboro, IL Foster Children named MADISON

I have some letters from a Mrs. George Poss that involve the placement of some Madison children including Charley b. 1893, John M. b. 1898, and Mamie b. 1899 with the childless family of George and Mary Poss. The 1900 Census shows that two older girls Lizzie b. May 1891 and Mary b. April 1892 Madison were inmates of the St. Mary's Orphanage. I believe the Mother to be Lizzie McAvoy Madison of St. Louis, MO who was born in Ireland.

The letters were in a set of microfilms of orphanage records that I copied. They concern early adoptions or placements from St. Joseph Orphan Asylum and St. Ann's Asylum in St. Louis, MO.

The 1910 Census for McLeansboro shows George, 48, farmer, Mary A. 42, wife, Charley 17, John M. 12, and Mamie 10.

The 1920 Census shows only George, Mary, and Mamie.

The 1930 Census for McLeansboro shows Mary, a widow 63, and Mamie, 30, who works in a shirt factory.

SSDI shows Mamie Poss b. 11 Aug 1899 d.April 1981 McLeansboro, IL.

The children, according to the letters, were fostered by the family because the mother would not release them for adoption.

There is a John M. Madison b. 1898 MO in the 1930 Census for Los Angeles, California who may be the John M. Madison
fostered by the Poss family. John M Madison 32, Susan Evans Madison 31, John M Madison 7, Annette Madison 4 4/12.

I also found that the Hamilton County Historical Society has four cd's of remembrances by Mamie (Madison) Poss available.

Please contact me if you have an interest in these papers.

Kathy@FamilyWeSearch.com

My great grandmother's name was Sarah Ellen Rebecca Poss. She was born in 1882 in Alabama, died in 1962 in Georgia. I do know that she had a brother named William/Will, she would call him Brother Will. She also had a sister named Mattie Francis. She was known as Aunt Lary with a long a.
Sarah married William Wesley Wallace. In the 1900 census she is listed as Sallie (which she liked)it also states that her parents were both born in Georgia. Mattie married a Wilson, if this helps. I am at a brick wall with this family. I would be very thankful for any help.
I listed this down a couple of posting. I had to reregister do to problems with internet and email service.

My Posses are from New York and Michigan (maybe Ohio and Ontario too but I'm not sure about that yet) and I am struggling to find data. Is there a Poss DNA project or any family pages with Poss data? I would certainly consider starting one for all Poss data.

james2423 - I am in the same line as you! And very closely related, it looks like. Malvina was my great-grandma. I'm Myrtle's granddaughter, Vanessa. It doesn't look like the others posting in this thread are connected. E-mail me and let's compare notes! Are you related to Ruby (you included the Goolsbey and Klaman names in your post)?

Vanessa Christensen
wzrlover@hotmail.com
Jacob and Peter Poss Connection

Hi
I believe we have family in common. I have Willie Poss b: ~1877 WI, son of Peter Poss b: 1850 and Barbara b: 1852 Germany. Peter's father was Jacob Poss b: 1803, d: 1892 and his mother was Mary Eliza (Elizabeth) b: 1804, d: 1879. Jacob and Mary immigrated from Germany and moved to Wisconsin. I have an 1850 census document listing all the children. However, in that document, Peter was not yet born. Peter had a brother, Henry b: 1837 who married the sister of my 2nd g grandfather Jacob Wendling which is where my tie comes in. I have a considerable amount of information on the Wendling family in Wisconsin and am quickly acquiring information on the Poss family. Would love to exchange information.
Poss (Posz)

Hi. I am wondering if your Poss lineage links to mine. I've traced to Jacob and Mary Eliza (Elizabeth?) b: ~1803 Rhein, Prussia who immigrated to Wisconsin, Trempealeau area. Their children are Jacob b: 1833, Henry b: 1837, Elizabeth b: 1840, David b: 1844 all in Germany. Other children are Peter b: 1850 WI. Henry married Margaretha Wendling b: 1838, also Prussia. Their children are Peter b: 1864, Mary b: 1865, Margaret b: 1869, Kate b: 1871 and William H. b: 1875 all b: Wisconsin I believe in Gale Township, Trempealeau County. I've found many other names, mostly in the LaCrosse, Galesville area, though I believe Jacob eventually moved to MN as an older man..perhaps lived with a daughter.

I descend from Margaretha and Henry, as she is the sister to my 2nd g grandfather, Jacob Wendling b: 1847 Bingen-on-Rhine Germany.

Would love to exchange information if this sounds like your family. Thanks so much.
Poss/Murphy/Layton/Wack Connections

I have limited information on this family line connection and would appreciate any information that anyone may have.

"Guy" or "Hugh" Murphy married a "Daisy" Pugh. Unknown origins and dates involved. They had three children of which I am aware of:

Gladys M. Murphy (Wack): DOB 7/13/1907 in Allentown, AL (I don't show that an Allentown exists in AL). Gladys married a George Martin Wack: DOB: 03/14/1903, born in New Orleans, LA. George was previously married to a Mildred J. Wack (Surname unknown who died on 6/22/1940). Gladys and George had no biological children, however, adopted one of Gladys' sisters children. Both her and George died in Missouri.

Marjorie M. Murphy (Poss, Layton): DOB: 8/19/1910 in Island, KY. First marred a Floyd H. Poss (possibly a Floyd Herman Poss). Information unknown. Had 5 children with this person. Gladys Poss, DOB: 1943; Richard Poss, DOB: Unknown; Melvin Poss, DOB: Unknown; Raymond Poss, DOB: Unknown (Married a Delores Poss...had 6 children, supposidly 5 daughters, 1 son may all be living in the Spokane, WA area); and a Mary Poss (Wendt), DOB: Unknown, obviously married a "Wendt", no other information known.

James Woodrow Murphy. DOB: Unknown, married, Unknown, had 1 child named Pam.

I can not find any information at all on the lineage above. On the death certificates of Gladys and Marjie, one lists Guy Murphy as father, while other lists Hugh Murphy as father. Both list Daisy Pugh as mother, but I can not find any records on her.

We cannot find anything before his death other than his marriage certificate (Martha Sarahanne Nix) in 1879. We know that Martha died about 1895 leaving dau. Cynthia Missouri Nix (m. William T. Fowler), son Valentine Francis Joseph Poss (m. Annie Jordan), dau. Lillie Irene Poss (m. Evan Wallace). There was also another son who died at a young age, John Milton Poss. Please help us fill in the blanks for our line of the Poss family!!!

Hi Dawn

I just found the Poss name in my lineage. I think my line is further back than you are mentioning, however there's a possibility of a connection, I think. My 2nd g grandfather, Jacob Wendling b: 1847 Germany and his sister Margaretha b: 1838 Germany immigrated to Wisconsin in 1856. Margaretha married Henry Poss. I believe that Margaretha (Mary, Margaret, Martha) and Henry lived in Gale, Trempealeau.
Her father was Mat Keifer. No recorded mother. She died August 25th. I also have a pic of their tombstone at St. Francis Cemetary, Brighton WI. I hope this helps anyone.

I am trying to locate grandchildren for a file that I am currently working on. I have very limited information. These grandchildren would be 5 girls and 1 boy (name given to me as Michael Poss). All the girls are supposidly married. They would be the children of a Raymond Poss (no information available). Raymond would be one of 5 children born to a Floyd H. Poss and a Marjorie (Margie) (Nee Murphy) (Poss) Layton. Siblings of Raymond are possibly a Gladys Ann, Richard, Melvin and Mary (Poss) Wendt. If you have any information on this lineage, please contact me at bvalle@jeffcomo.org.

Thanks!
