Hello Pou Family-I've been doing a bit of research on this family off and on during the last 7 years. I am descended from Gavin Pou who settled in South Carolina in the 1700's. I enjoy reading some of the stories regarding the origins of the family however I cannot find any verifiable proof that the family came from Scotland or any of the other allegations.

For example, I have searched the Church of Scotland baptismal records (these are now on-line) for Gavin Pou/Pow's birth for the relevant period (1650-1750) and beyond and he is not listed in terms of his parents being a Philip/Ursula. There are 2 Gavin Pows that could fit with regards to the time period --but parents have names like Robert and Agnes (Drew)--not Philip or Ursula. I have also done a similar search in the Scottish Catholic baptismal records. In fact, very few PoUs are listed at all in Scottish records. All these records can be accessed at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk. Of course, it is possible that the baptism is registered with a denomination that is not on-line but the largest number of baptisms in Scotland are Church of Scotland records.

I understand that the reference for Gavin Pou being Scottish comes from A History of Orangeburg County, SC. However, I cannot find any other record to substantiate this or the other claims regarding the names of Ursula Mureno, Philip Pou, Spanish, Italian, or other ancestry.

I do agree that the name Pou as it is being spelled here is Spanish. It is still common in the Catalan area.

I was wondering if anyone can help me with verifiable records to substantiate any of the claims on the message board.

Many thanks!!

Melinda
