Hope you are still at the same addy as this is in reply to a very old post. Have since discovered my grandfather, Arthur Poulton, took his surname from his step-father, John Poulton/Powlton. John married Arthur's mother, Emily Ball, April 1901 in Lancaster, Lancs. Do you know if William Henry Poulton had a brother named John, who was a clogger in Lancashire?

I've just started researching my family tree and have very little to go on but my Father was Clive Poulton (b.1938) in East Grinstead (near London England). His Father was Harry Alfred Poulton who married Edith Thornton. Could this be the Harry you mentioned?

Do you have any more information on this line?

Just reviewing your post of 2007 and I have realised that you have stated that William remarried after Abigails death to Hannah in 1817? Abigail Poulton died on the 10 May 1840, at St Alkmund, Derbyshire, death certificate states widow of William Poulton. Therefore the marriage of William and Hannah is incorrect as he did not remarry. William died on the 4 Nov 1843 at St Alkmund, Derbyshire.

I'm related to Mary Poulton born 1839 in Kensington, Middlesex, England. Mary is the daughter of Robert Poulton & Henrietta French.
Mary Poulton married George Mason born 1838 in Belper, Derbyshire, England. George Mason's parents are William Mason & Rachel Hadley. Rachel Hadley is my GG Aunt. Would you happen to know anything about this family? The HADLEY'S are my direct lineage.

My name is Shelley Rapier and I am researching my family tree. I believe this little girl is my grandfather's sister. I would love to purchase this photo from you if you are willing to sell it. I realize you posted this a few years ago so you may not even be actively involved with this site any longer, but if you are I would welcome a response from you. My grandfather and (whom my family has always known as John Charles Barrett) and his sister, Thelma, have been so hard to find any information about for some time now. It turns out that the reason why I could not find them under the name I knew them as was because they are apparently not the biological children of the man we have always thought they were. It seems that Charles Barrett (my great-great grandfather) married his wife, Elizabeth, after she had already had John and Elizabeth. I am not sure what led to this, but I am doing more research to discover if perhaps John and Thelma's Poulton father perhaps passed away when they were babies and were adopted by the man we've always thought was their biological father. Anyway, this picture is very important to us if it is our Thelma and we would love to know how we can work with you to get the picture back into our family.

I have found this christening record on Ancestry: Charlotte Poulton, born 10Dec1787, Cr 4Jan1788, Westminster London, to Charles Poulton & Mary.
It's about 13 yrs early for my Charlotte & not early enough for her granma. Her hubby was Stephen Dorman born `1800 Canterbury, Kent.
They had a dau. Charlotte Matilda born 1827 London.
It could be her of course but that was the closest & the only child for them there.
What do you think.

My Charlotte married my ggg gpa Stephen DORMAN 11Aug1822, at All Soul's Paddington, London. I have no info about Charlotte at all. They had a dau Charlotte Matilda in 1827 & it looks as tho Charlotte died as Stephen married again to Mary Ann WHITELOCK 19Sep1829, St Marylebone, London. Charlotte Matilda married Edwin ATKINSON in 1852 in NSW.

The names you have mentioned as your rellies don't seem to appear on my tree as yet, maybe they should be there ) Most of my Poultons are in Adelaide South Australia, however a few brothers moved to Victoria in the late 1800s. They settled in the Hopetoun district . Maybe this branch will relate to you.

hi Gail, I would be rapt if we could link in, however I think it would have to be through an English connection. The Poultons in my family arrived inm South Australia in 1852 aboard the Omega. The original patriarch of the SA Poultons is Thomas Edward Poulton born abt 1823 in Wiltshire England. So unless your James is related to him in some way I miss out on my first convict link :(

I have only recently found the Poulton family tree website and wonder whether anyone can provide further information to that given below:

HENRIETTA SARAH POULTON who was christened on 17 August 1834 at St Luke’s Chelsea and died in 1907 in Woods Lane, Derby, was my great grand mother.

a HANNAH ??????? at St Werbergh’s Derby.

ABIGAIL CAMPION could be the daughter of GERMAN CAMPION (Chr 30 April 1745) and MARY COCKAIGNE (chr 9 August 1744) who were married at Mackworth on 5th September 1769. Children of WILLIAM and ABIGAIL POULTON:

i) ELLEN POULTON was christened 10 March 1800. She married JOSEPH WOODWARD, a clockmaker(see Directories) , at All Saints, Derby on 26 February 1821

ii) CHARLES POULTON was christened 1802, St Werbergh’s, Derby;

iii) THOMAS POULTON was christened 10 May 1804, St Werbergh’s, Derby. He married MARY ?????? and had children JULIA (born 31 August 1846, christened 11 October 1846) and SAMUEL (christened 11 November 1848) at Elvaston. He was a Victualler at Crosskeys, 45 Cornmarket (Bagshaw Trade
Directory 1846).

iv) FREDERICK POULTON was christened 17 October 1806 St Werbergh’s, Derby

v) ROBERT POULTON was christened 30 November 1807, St Werbergh’s, Derby.
He married HENRIETTA FRENCH who was born in Hampshire in 1816 at Chorlton (or Chawton or Chalton according to three different census returns).
Robert may have learned his clockmaking skills from Joseph Woodward who became his brother-in-law when Robert was 14.

vi) MARY POULTON was christened 4 April 1810, All Saints, Derby

vii) HENRY POULTON was christened 20 June 1812, St Werbergh’s, Derby

After Abigail's death, William married again.

Children of WILLIAM and HANNAH POULTON:

i) MARTHA MARIA POULTON was christened on 6 April 1817 at St Werbergh’s Derby.

ROBERT POULTON was christened 30 November 1807, St Werbergh’s, Derby. He married HENRIETTA FRENCH and they lived at 2 Mayfield Place, Kensington (by the Crown Public House in Kensington High Street). ROBERT was working as a clock and watch maker and was also believed to have been
employed maintaining the clocks of Kensington Palace. Between 1847 and 1851, he moved back to Derby and kept a shop still working at watch making.

HENRIETTA FRENCH was reported in different census returns as having been born in Chawton, Charlton and Cholton. Census returns show that there were 'French' families in Chawton in Hampshire at the time of her birth.

Children of ROBERT and HENRIETTA POULTON:

i) HENRIETTTA S POULTON was christened on 17 August 1834 at St Luke’s Chelsea and died in 1907 in Woods Lane, Derby;

1. PO Directory 1840-1842: Robert Poulton: Clockmaker, 2 Mayfield

2. The Census entry for 1841 was noted down by me in 1974 when the Records Office was in Carey Street. Subsequently, when I returned to try to obtain a photocopy of this entry, it shows as as being 'missing'. I have therefore never been able to obtain a formal; copy although the PO Directory (quoted above) provides the necessary confirmatory detail. The only problem raised is that my notes of that time suggest that Robert was born in Middlesex. My connection of his birth to that of Robert Poulton, son of William Poulton is not therefore established for certain.

3. Another Poulton, possibly unrelated, was living in Derby at the time of the 1881 Census:

Edith Josephine Poulton b.1900.Q4.Islington.1b.304, was the daughter of Joseph William (b.1858.Q2.Shoreditch.1c.190) and Clara Theresa Poulton(nee Veale), born 1875 .Q1.Woolwich.1d.1051) who were living at 13 Alwyne Road,Islington in 1901 at the time of the Census. Joseph & Clara married 1897.Q3.Woolwich.1d.2164. Joseph was a flautist, born Haggerston, London, aged 40 yrs and Clara was born at Plumstead. Edith had a sister Doris who was 2 at the time of the Census. There is a marriage for Edith in 1926. Ref. Q4. Paddington.1a.136, to Patrick M Hopkins. I have also found 2 possible children from this marriage, Michael V Hopkins,b.1927.Q4.Paddington.1a.95. and James R Hopkins, b.1936.Q1.Paddington.1a.78. Possible death for Joseph W Poulton is 1931. Q1.Stepney.1c.308.Aged 69yrs.Hope this helps.

Hello, I have barely started on the Poulton family. I know of R W Poulton, have read of his Rugby days and untimely death in the War, so not to go on to the family business. It was said many years ago by a Poulton I knew in Pennsyvlania USA that he was somehow related to James Poulton B 1892 in Scotland. His father was James K Poulton, husband of Helen Campbell Crawford Clark. Their son James (B 1892) moved to Pennsylvania (1920) and his wife Elizabeth Stevenson Poulton joined him nearly a year later with their children. One of the children was James (B 1921) and he died in WW2 at Normandy, France in 1944. If any of this sound like a connection could be made to any of their Poultons, this would be a help fo me.

My name is Leigh Robert McMartin, my Grandmother was Mary Poulton, she died on 11 August 1966 & my Grandfather was Robert McMartin,he came from Dumbarton so my father George McMartin tells me, also that grandfather died in or about 1947. Also my dad said that Grandfathers middle name was Bunting as was my Uncle Finlay's third name Bunting.

I'm looking for information about a Charles Poulton who married Rebecca Kinney. They had a daughter named Phoebe Ella Poulton who married Charles Mendenhall. Phoebe and Charles had the following children: Arthur Stanley, Edna, Edith, and Acel Edwin (my grandfather). I think there was one other boy but I can't remember his name. No question -- we are related. My grandfather (John, the last brickie from London) emigrated to Saskatchewan in 1906, and his brother Edward Stenning did likewise somewhat later. Two of his sisters emigrated to Australia, Elizabeth (Bessie) and, I believe, Annie.

I did to go Herts in March, and was able to trace the family back further. Here is a very quick summary:

Great grandfather John POULTON's mother was Anne POULTON [b 1823,Welwyn, Herts] She was never married.

Her parents were John POULTON [b 1791, Luton, Beds; d 1864, Welwyn, Herts] and Sarah EVANS [b 1790, Barton-Le-Clay, Beds; d 1828, Welwyn, Herts] who married at the Parish Church of St. Mary, in Luton, Beds in 1811.

His parents were John POULTON [b 1755, Chalgrave, Beds; d 1835, Welwyn, Herts] and Mary DORRINGTON [b 1764, Harpenden, Herts; d 1847, Welwyn, Herts] who married at the Parish Church of St. Mary, in Luton, Beds in 1789.

His parents were Thomas POULTON and Ann [Chalgrave, Beds].

I've had a quick search in the IGI and Scottish BDM indexes, but don't think that your Poulton line is related to this one. Here's what I've found:

James Poulton, born 1892 in Law, Carlisle, Scotland was the son of James and Margaret (formerly Keith)

James and Margaret were married in Carlisle in 1881, when James was said to be 30 - his parents were William and Sarah (formerly Burfitt)

James snr was born in Nympsfield, Gloucestershire, England in 1849 to William & Sarah (formerly Burford) - they were married in 1839 in Nympsfield, and James' father was given as Edward Poulton.

The Poultons were in Nympsfield for at least 150 years prior to that time, and to my knowledge have no link with the Berkshire Poultons from whom R W Poulton is descended.

I have most of the poulton line that you ask about. There are some early differences around the 1790 - 1810 mark. The Johns are in 3 generations that I have and are all brickies. They are from the Pancras area of London. i see you are from Canada. My mother from the Poulton line had relations go across to Canada in the early 1900's. There could be a connection.

im not sure wheteher these are the same people but i am currently resaerching my family tree,and i know i do somewhere have relatives called albert poulton.from the pancras area.(on my grandads side.my name is poulter BUT the family name should be poulton.there was a bigamist in the family years ago.and the name changed.all my family history on the poulter/poulton side come from islington,st pancras and edmonton and other london areas. if i had these certificates it would help me find out more. please??? i have got other stuff but not alot.

I have Charlotte Poulton who married my ggg gpa Stephen Dorman in 1822. They had a dau Charlotte Matilda in 1827. The whole family migrated around 1850 to Aus. I know nothing about Charlotte's ancestors tho....yet. Cheers. Annie

I have a John Poulton b. 9 Nov 1811 in Loudoun Co, VA; moved to, settled and died in Belmont Co, OH 29 Jan 1879. John and Elizabeth may be siblings or cousins.

Hello, I saw your post inquiring about Reeds. My Reeds were in Loudoun Co Va. and Montgomery Co. MD. You mentioned a couple of James Reed's in the 8th Va. There is a James W. Reed buried in the Monacacy Cemetary in Bealsville M.D. who was a conderate soldier. I think his wifes name is Jenny. His headstone can be viewed on FindaGrave.com, if thats any help. My james reed b.1840 isn't the same one. My Reeds also have a John Reed b.1800 d.1880 lived in Loudoun Co. Lived in Frederick Md. and died in Mongomery Co Md. His father was James Reed b.1772 d.1829

I don't think it's our family. The 1841 census gives our names as Elizabeth, John, Mary, Rosena, William and Edward Crawford. Rosena or Rosa then married Michael Scully in Ratcliffe, Middlesex, England. I do not know where the Crawford's came from as yet. The Scully's came from County Carlow, Ireland. thank you for replying.

Hi

I have some information but not dates.
I believe the Scully family originally came from Co Antrim, area of Ireland, sometime in the 1800's.
Margaret Scully and Rosa (or Rosina) Scully and a sister, who died young in a tragic accident, lived in SE2 London area.
Do these names mean anything to you?
