am starting to trace family tree.my dad ernest pow was born in Lynton, Devon 1944. my understanding of the surname is of Scottish origin meaning 'mouth of the Forth' i have traced the tree back previously, albeit a little quickly, but did go back to Stirling 1600s which does tie in. if anyone can help i'd be grateful

can you give me anything else at all. I have quite an extensive tree but do not have a James for that birth date. Are you able to tell me about siblings spouses children etc. If they aren't part of my tree I can bet you I've come across him somewhere. Would like to help.

Your Edward Pow, died 06 May 1910, Ayr is my first cousin, 3x removed. James Pow m. Moir was my 2xgreat grandma's brother.
Your Margaret Jack of Nicolas Hume & Hugh Jack died 12 Jan 1919 Glasgow and married Edward Pow 16 June 1875 in Greenock. BTW, I have Edward Pow born 1845 Tillicoultry, Clackmannan.

Hi there
Interested to hear about my (??) family history. I'm Ken Pow, Born in Haddington 1957. Dad is Robert Pow born 1926 in Nrth Berwick. Granddad was Hugh Jack Pow born 1884 (1965) in East Lothian. Great Granddad was Edward Pow 1865 (1910). Great Great Grandad was James Pow born? farmer married Jane Moir.
On the other side the other Great Great Grandad was Hugh Jack who married Nicolus Hume.
Don't know if we're on the same tree but interested to know about anyhting.

I'm currently living in New Zealand. Dad is here too.

Hi there, I've looked into that myself as well, and the answer that I've gotten back from various sources is that the Pow name being predominantly from the Edinburgh area does not have it's own Tartan pattern. Traditionally tartan patterns were for highlanders (northern Scotland). As such even the city of Edinburgh does not have it's own traditional pattern. Although in modern times many "new" tartan patterns are created for all sorts of things.
If you want to research it with a tartan maker, I recommend www.tartanstore.net They have a database of over 13,000 patterns from old traditional ones to newer modern ones. The Pow's did however have a family crest which I have a copy of.
As for Pow having to do with water, there is a creek in Scotland near Fife called Pow Burn, named after the family. You can look it up as well on google maps.

Hi

I believe the only tarten related to the Pow's is from Edingburgh. Although Pow a scottish name and no doubt had a tartan at the time. I've tried to find one for the Pows. It seems to be generic with the area of Edingburgh. Not sure when many of the Pow clan went South, mainly to Somerset (Bath)the tarten got lost with a lot of history and content of the name.
The Pow name certainly had something to do with water, or brook there are still names in Scotland with Pow refering to that. I wish you luck with your research

Since posting this message in January. I have foumd a wealth of info about my William who married Hannah. There's so much I can't set it all down here. I have Williams brothers and sisters his father, his father's father and his father's father's father and all sisters and brothers etc. I am currently wading through some more info which may take me back a generation further again. I know it's a few years ago that you were looking at the Pow's from Tranent, but if you're still around I wouldn't mind seeing what you've come up with. I am also from George Pow and Janet Stevenson, but going instead though their daughter Ann their son George Pow born 1676, all the way through to my Great Grandad William Pow b 1879 in Haddington, East Lothian before he moved to Calgary Canada. His son (my grandad) also William is still alive (90 this year) and really wants to know what happened to all his cousins etc that stayed in Scotland.

I have come across John Horn and Ann Pow during my research, Ann is a very distant relation, We share a common ancestry 4 generations back from Ann Pow to Georg Pow and Janet Stevenson who married 1 jun 1675 in Tranent .

Adam Pow's correct date of birth is 3 Jan 1858 and was born in Falkirk, Scotland. His parents were James Pow, born 1823 and Jane Davidson. Reported as "Jean" Davidson in an I.G.I. file.

Some of their children have been idntified as: William Pow, unk DOB; James Pow, 8 Jun 1855; Marion Pow (a male), 3 Nov 1859; Robert Davidson Pow, 13 Nov 1861 and David Pow born 1867.

My family of Pow's originate from East Lothian , mainly Tranant , Haddington and Gladsmuir and mostly in agriculture.Roughly in the 1850's John Pow and his wife Margaret Crawford moved to West Lothian to the Bathgate , Armadale area . Most of the subsequently family were miners. I would like to hear from anybody researching this family especially the West Lothian side .

Looking for family of my Dad.. He was born in Chicago 1935. His mother was Evelyn Pow (who came from Ottowa) Not much on her side either..Her Parents were Mary and John.. But my dad's father's name was Marvin Frederick Hickstein Sr. We think he passed in 1935 or shortly afterwords.. That was what we were told.. We no nothing else. My father passed on in July of 1987.. My grandmother we don't think married our grandfather.. but she did go on a marry a man by the name of Tom Hecker and they had a son named Earl George in the early 1940"s.. ANy help would greatly help...

I have a William Pow (born 1787 in Bath) married to a Hannah Smith. Marriage was on Aug 10, 1819 at Walcot Parish in Bath. Their children were Charles, John, Thomas, and George. William's parents were Joseph Pow and Betty Bave. Don't have birth dates for either, but they were married in Bath on Nov 1, 1768. Don't know if this is the William and Hannah you're looking for, but thought I'd pass it along anyway.

A bit of a tearaway your William. In August 1813 he was one of a party who stormed the Bitton Lock-up to rescue William LACEY who had been captured for stealing a loaf of bread from Sarah TOWNSEND at Oldland. He was said to be one of The Cock Road Gang.

He married Hannah BRAIN on 31.5.1819 at Biton. They lived at Parkwall, Oldland.

In 1860 census Jane Devereux Pow was listed with their oldest 3 children, Lemuel, St Antoine, and Edwin Pow in Harrison County Mississppi in the household of Philip Perez. researching the Pow name.

Pow Family - Jersey, Channel Isles

Several generations of the Pow's lived and died in St Helier between 1841 and 1891. They lived, first in Hill Street, then in Mulcaster Street.

The Last two, Eliza and Elizabeth, married into the family, but were born in the Tiverton area of Devon.

Maiden names were Wadham and Rusden respectively.

Looking for information from the family of William Pow, married to Jessie. Lived I believe at 6 Newton Street, Edinburgh. Children: Thomas, John, Andrew, William (moved to Calgary in about 1912(?), Thomas and John killed in WWII) and Jim, George, Mary, Maggie & Jessie (stayed in Scotland). I believe Andrew went on to move to Perth Australia after the WWII.
The son William married Mary Thompson of Aboyne Aberdineshire, and had one son, also William. Looking specifically to find family ties to the children of William and Jessie.
