That is SO funny! I am a Powder as well (descendant of Pierre Powder who also had Cree name but I can't remember what it is)
- but I definitely look very Metis ;/ Cree - as does my entire family for the last 4 generations that I know of. We are not light skinned at all. But I was wondering where those beauty marks on my face and my sons curly hair came from! Maybe it's those Powder genes!

Regarding Antoine Jr. I found him in the 1901 census as Antoine Blandion, in 1906 as Antoine Dion, and in the 1911 census as Antoine Wattisons, at least thats how the transcriber at automatedgenealogy.com has it. He is in Alberta/Edmonton/18 Townships 64/page1. Does anyone know for sure what surname the family was using in 1911 or what surname they finally settled on ?
Interesting how different branches of the family adopted different surnames. My great grandfather Joseph used Blandion until the mid 1870's then changed to Blayone.
By the way Louis Dube and his family are on the same page as Antoine in the 1911 census, they have him as Dupe.

Hi all!

I consulted with one of my friends in Switzerland who grew up in Nice, and he said that if in Canada "dit" was used to denote a place of origin in France it was incorrectly applied. The proper terminology would be "de", which refers to "of"....So, for example, Marquis de Sade, refers to Marquis of Sade (region in France).

I vaguely remember this from my high school french as well.

In any case....here's another source. In many cases I think the english version of names would be used whenever available, as opposed to using Cree terms of references --- particularly if Wabasca was just one of a number of names given to him...

"The French surname Dion/Dionne is a diminutive version of the term 'blondion' which, in turn, is an aberration of the French word 'blondinet'(masculine) or 'blondinette'(feminine) means 'fair-haired child'. The root word of 'blondinette' is 'blond' (masculine) or 'blonde' (feminine) which means 'fair-haired' in French. [33] When this surname is found in parish records, fur trade documents, and Métis scrip affidavits, other variations of this name, such as Blondion, Blayonne, Mondion, Moignon appear. The surnames Dion or Blondion are sometimes used simultaneously with the Cree name Wabasca, which also means 'white' or 'fair'. One of the earliest references to this name is in relation to the Ojibwa chief Black Powder (a.k.a. Mukatai, or Powder), who was the leader of a small band of mixed Cree and Ojibwa, who wintered on the shores of Jackfish Lake in west-central Saskatchewan, and hunted bison on the plains in the spring and fall. Black Powder was the friend and sub-chief of Kee-a-kee-ka-sa-coo-way - "The Man Who gives the War Whoop", the most important Plains Cree Chief of the mid-nineteenth century. The son of Black Powder, Antoine Blondion, married a daughter of Joseph Desjarlais and Josephte Cardinal. He is also noteworthy because he is the brother of Mistahimusqua, better known as Big Bear."

I consulted a friend of mine who speaks French and says that the literal translation would be a "nickname"...so "dit" refers to someone also being known as...

So Antoine Dion dit Wabasca, would translate to Antoine Dion also known as Wabasca.

Some of her scrip records indicated Blandion. I think it just happened to be the version of the last name that she chose to use --- I think she must've identitied more with Wabasca than Blandion.

Hey maybe I am related to you more than one way. My great grandparents on my grandmothers side, was a Gladu and my great grandfather (her husband) last name was a Bernard he came from down East somewhere and settlemed in Alberta. They tried to open up a reserve near Morningside Alberta in the early 1950's I beleive, (morningside is near Red Deer and Lacome) That's all I know of him. His name was Peter Bernard and my greatgrandmother was Justine Gladue or Gowan. Anyway the Gladue's say that they are descendants of Chiel Papaschase from the reserve that in South Edmonton. The Bernards all have beauty marks as well, moles as you call them on the face.

Such a small world. I made a trip to Edmonton for the first time since I was a baby this summer. On National Aboriginal Day, my sister and I ended up meeting someone who was related through marriage. It's strange how you can be related to absolutely everyone in Indian country (and some that aren't!)

My other great-great-great grandfather was Joseph Gladu, or Oskinikiw - he was the headman to Michel Calihoo's band.

My ggg grandmother died on the Michel Reserve before 1920 (I don't remember the exact date).

Well this is a small world. I know some of the people who are descendants of the Michel band. In fact one lives in the community where I live. There last name is Calahoo. I also know some of the others who are living near Alexander Band. My cree is not too good either. Keep in touch and we may find more relatives.

Lulu,

That's really interesting. I grew up in a Mohawk community, so admittedly my Cree is poor, but I was told that Wabasca/Wabiscaw translates to fair in English. I located a picture of one of the Antoine Dion's if anyone is interested. My grandmother was much darker than my grandfather, and she's the one that come from this line, as well as through the Michel Band (her g-grandfather was second in command to Michel Calihoo, as well some of my cousins are direct descedants of Michel).

...The name Powder was derived from BlackPowder...gr.gr.gr.mushum was trading furs for the HBC. Now as we know....multiple wives was the norm. My gr.gr.mushum...Pierre (BigBears brother) was given the last name Powder...his first name being french...we suspect his mother was French. He was also much lighter toned as well...all of us Powder's have the "Powder" look...fair skin...light brown eyes...and a bit of curl in our hair which is dark brown to black. Alot of us also have the "Powder" beauty marks...very common and stratigically placed onto those of us who bare such a Powder resemblance...Missionaries had changed Powder to LaPoudre for some time...then again, over time Powder was brought back. My Powder line is in and around Edmonton...north up to northern Sask. Uranium city has alot of Powder's...it's a facinating line...Good Luck...

Different family members took different parts of the name...like Antoine Sr. used Blandion/Dion/Blayonne....and his granddaughter (my gg grandmother) used Wabasca, which was part of Chief Blackpowder's name as well...Some members took Powder, some took Blondin, Blandin, Blandion, Dion, Dionne, Blayon, Blayonne..........so many of them!

That is interesting. My dad always said we had relatives in Enoch, Paul Band, and Hobbema. I am from a Meits Settlement in Alberta called Kikino, a couple of hours north of Edmonton. I know Antoine Sr. had a lot of children and alot of them were female so there is a lot of relatives all over Canada and the US that we don't even know what the last names are. Where does the name Powder come in besides BlackPowder being Antoine Sr.'s father.

The name that is used by our family today is Blyan. My great grandfather was William Blyan son of Felix Blandion and Ann Whitford, Antoine Blandion Sr and Marie Desjarlais are Felix's parents and Big Bear was Antoine's half brother. Black Powder was Antoines father. Is that where the name Powder came from? I am still searching for any other information on the name, I would like more informaion on LeBlanc and White. I would like to know if my husband has ties to the Blandion/Blayone name. His White family has ties to the Alexander Band near Edmonton, AB. Are some of the families still using Blayone and where are they living. The Blyan's are all in Alberta and Saskachewan.

Re: Powder surname

The French surname Dion/Dionne is a diminutive version of the term 'blondion' which, in turn, is an aberration of the French word 'blondinet'(masculine) or 'blondinette'(feminine) means 'fair-haired child'. He is also noteworthy because he is the brother of Mistahimusqua, better known as Big Bear.

Aside from the variations that are fairly obvious, such as Blondin, Blandin, the various Dion spellings, etc., I only know of names that came further down the line. I know that my great-grandmother's family went by Wabasca, sometimes Wabisca, Wabiscaw, which if you aren't already aware, means "fair" or "pale" in Cree, much Blondion, Blandion, etc.
