Hi everyone,

James Powell born 1803, Montgomeryshire, Wales was my x3 Grt Grandfather who married in 1827 Coreley, Shropshire Susannah Cranage born 1809, Coreley, Shropshire.

I've been unable to trace James Powell any further back but I do know that a number of Powell's where living in Coreley and the area at the time of his marriage so I'm thinking he may have been related to them somehow.

James profession was a Malster (mixed the hops and barley for the brewing of beers) which took the family to Ludlow and then later to the Black Country. My family still live in the Black Country area today.

Is anyone else researching these people because if so I would love to share and discuss further.

Kind regards
Adrian Powell

Re: Powel, Robert Hare

I have been extensively researching John Hare Powel as a very short anecdotal record indicates he was my great grandmother's father. I suspect that she was illegitimate and conceived the year John's wife died, 1845.

Much of the research supports the facts in the anecdotal record but I can find no documentation of the maiden name of my g. grandmother. She delivered two children on the Powel mansion estate where her husband Michael McCaffrey was the gardener. One child was Thomas Hare McCaffrey (b. 1870) who graduated from Penn Law School and was precepted by E. Spencer Miller Jr.the son of the owner of the Powel mansion at the time of Thomas' birth. Spencer's wife, Anne, was Anne Emlen Hare.

I am interested in any info that may provide me with documentation of my g. grandmother's surname.

Mary Molly Rutledge (1790 - 1867) was the daughter of General George Rutledge (1761 - 1813) and Annis Armstrong (1764 - 1834).
I don't have a Stephen W. Rutledge in my file but that doesn't mean he is not in the tree. My file is far from complete.

I will be glad to share what I have on the Rutledge family if you think it would be of use to you.

My Powell connection may be through the Rutledge-Wilson lines who is era 1820-40 were members of the Hickory Cove Baptist Church in Hawkins County Tennessee.

My 3gfather was Stephen W. Rutledge who was born 1830 in Hawkins County. We believe his mother was a Wilson, dau of Sam Wilson or Sam's son, but the church records suggest, but does not say, that his mother was Mary Polly Wilson.

His death certificate said his mother was a Wilson.

This is a long shot for sure, but the name Mary Polly Rutledge in your record sure suggests she was a Wilson and therefore my 4gmother......unless she married another of the Rutledge boys instead.

Don Kelly, Owen (Smith County) Rutledge (Hawkins County) Tennessee.

Jacob Powell m. Elizabeth Howard

I've traced my SMITH line in Indiana to John SMITH who married Mary POWELL. Mary's parents were Jacob POWELL, born 1772 in England, and Elizabeth HOWARD, born 1776 in England. Jacob and Elizabeth were married about 1798, probably in Delaware. Some of their children were born in Sussex, Delaware; some were born in Maryland; and the last few were born in Indiana. Jacob Powell died in 1846 in Posey, Switzerland County, Indiana. Is anyone else working on this POWELL family or other POWELL families in Delaware, Maryland, or Indiana that might tie in?

Powell bios in Sharp Family in NC blog

Recently, I started a genealogy blog for my part of the Sharp family to share the extensive family history research I did two years ago. My grandmother on my father’s side is a Sharp from Harrellsville, NC. The blog will also cover some of the families who married into the Sharp family (e.g., Winbourne, Hare, Parker, Powell). I just started a series on my Powell ancestors. I am also doing brief histories of where they lived and travel tips for the locations. I welcome suggestions on how the blog can be better or updates to my research. You can find the Sharp Family in NC blog at
http://billives.typepad.com/sharp_family_in_nc/
Miki:

Your ancestor's surname was Powers and not Powel. Alta Powers married Aurelian Fontenot. The pronunciation of the name Powers by someone with a southern accent sometimes sounds like Powel.

Alta was the daughter of David Powers and Marie Louise Deville. David Powers came to Louisiana from New York. Marie Louise Deville was a native of St. Landry Parish.

Do you have a date of birth for Alta? Do you know where Aurelian Fontenot and Alta Powers are buried? Who did their daughter Anabelle marry?

I would appreciate so much hearing from you. If you have any other questions I will be happy to answer them if I can.

Please contact me at montereybush@earthlink.net

Thank you very much.

Sarah

Powell/Powel in Shropshire, England

I cannot find a birth or christening for Ann(e) Powell or Powel, who was at Ellesmere in Shropshire in 1871 and gave her place of birth as Bayston Hill near Shrewsbury. If she was truthful about her age, she would have been born in or about 1829. I understand that there was no church at Bayston Hill at that time. According to the IGI entry for her marriage to Henry Sharman in 1864, her father was called Samuel.

Re: powell family (black family) and more

Hello, My name is Mary and my mother has done alot of research in the archives on the Powell family of the Carolina's.
We are white, and know that we have past family members that had slaves. One of the Powell men was very fond of one of his Slaves, he married her and had a son, I don't know his sons name, but it was writen that this son of his must always be treat with respect, as also all his slaves, they must live in the home with them after his death. One of the Powell men also white, married an Indian Princess, and was punished in some way for this by the white goverment. My mother knows so much more than I do, but after his marriage he moved to Texas. So, these children you speak of that looked as if they were white more than likely were, as some of the Powell men married their slaves. Also, some of these Powell men were member of the politcal party too. I don't this this all down right I'm sure, but Please feel free to E-mail me at LittleBirdy24@AOL.Com, as I would love to be able to get this info right from my mom to you.
Thanks for your time,
Mary

Not sure if we are related or not. I have info as to the powell family with the last name spelled Powell living in East Texas. Richard Benjamin Powell being mariied to Elizabeth Martin Burch Powell and at the same time having a second family with Hedgar Anna Mitchell who was Native American Indian and other creole and related heritage. Benjamin and Hedgar Anna also had many children who could pass for "white at the same time that Benjamin and Elizabeth had children. Both sets of children looked exactly alike. Most could not be told apart from the other as Elizabeth and HEdgar Anna were of similar and like skin tone and hair as well as eyes and other personal features. Write back for more info.

POWEL/POWELL

A POWELL/POWEL Surname DNA Project is well underway, The DNA test can be used to prove the existence or the ablsence of a common ancestor. It will not prove who the common ancestor is, that is still up to you, but it can save a lot of barking up the worng tree. The project is open to all Powell's and variant spellings form anywhere in the world. Samples for the project must be submitted by male Powells. THe test is based on the Y-Chromosome which only males have. Ladies, you can try to find a brother, father, uncle, or cousin who will provide a sample. Please view our results at http://www.flash.net/~parino/powell-surname-dna-project.htm

If you want to take advantage of this new research technology please contact me at parino@flash.net. Family Tree DNA provides the testing. We receive no financial gain from this project.

POWELL, Ruben, Mildred

am trying to find information on a Mildred E. Powell. She was married to Jesse Robert Sanders, and on the 1920 census is listed there with her husband and a child, James R. Just above them on the census sheet is listed "Ruven" Powel, and I think this may be her parents. However, when I requested information from the city directory at the library in Dayton, he seems to be listed as Ruben Powell. I cannot find any information other than that one thing on "Ruven".
This is what I found;

Powel, Ruven W. Head New York
Maude Wife Ohio
Richard J. Father New York
Violette Mother
Maurice R. Son
Haverstock, J. Harold Stepson

(I found a J. Harold Haverstock born to Maude Walter, so wonder if this is the same Maude)

They are listed as being on E. Sixth Street. This has been such a brick wall for me, and any information you could give me would be wonderful. My husband is another son of Jesse Robert Sanders, and there was a Jim Harrison who was trying to find information on his grandfather, Jesse Robert Sanders. However the message was four years old, and his email is bouncing back to me. I have lots of information, including pictures that I would like to share with him. I am guessing that after Mildred and Jesse divorced, (1921), that she remarried a Harrison, and the son, James Richard assumed that last name. I would really appreciate any help you can give me.
Thank you,
Oma Sanders

John Atherton and Grace Atherton Powell - England

I am researching John and Grace Atherton Powell, brother and sister, born 1886 and 1887. Their parents were Captain Charles Atherton Ffolliott Powell and Annie Hewlings Herapath. In the 1891 UK Census they are living on Jersey, Channel Islands with a family named Journeaux. Their mother died in 1897 and in the 1901 UK Census they are living at White House Farm, Benhall St. Mary, Suffolk. I cannot find when their father died. They also had an older brother, Charles Jr. born 1880. In the 1891 Census he is living with his mother and father in Greenwich. By 1901 he is living with his paternal uncle in Bexhill, Sussex and is listed as a merchant sailor apprentice. I know that Charles Jr. went to Australia and died there without issue. His father was a Merchant Marine Captain. What happened to John and Grace? Any info on any of these people would be very much appreciated.
