Edgar E. Powell, Jr., died Sunday, June 14, 2009 at age 88. He was born in De Funiak Springs, FL, the eldest of Edgar E., Sr., and Gladys P. Powell. His family moved to Pensacola when he was six years old. He attended Pensacola High School. He joined the Army Air Corps Cadet program in 1942. He married Maxine Ingram in Las Vegas in 1945. They had 5 sons, one of whom lived for only 24 hours. They were married for 20 years.
Ed loved the Air Force. He was one of only 50 director pilots of the Drone program, in the entire Air Force. He also attended the War College at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, AL. He served in Okinawa, Korea, and Japan. He was in charge of the Little League baseball program in Okinawa, and ran the boxing programs in Okinawa, Japan, and at Eglin Air Force Base. He spent a total of 23 years on active duty, active reserve, and inactive reserve, retiring with the rank of Major. After his Air Force career, Ed became an insurance agent, and opened his own agency here in Pensacola. He left the insurance business in 1975, and went to work at NAS. He and his second wife, Mollie Stevens, were married in 1976. He was a charter member of East Brent Baptist Church. Ed was predeceased by his parents; his two brothers, Buford D. and John Quinton, and his sister, Wilma Jean Powell Joseph.
He is survived by his wife, Mollie; 3 sons, Edgar E. III (Dale), Thomas D. (Nina), and Anthony L. Powell. He had 13 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. Visitation will be held 9:30am-10:30am Thursday, June 18, 2009 at East Brent Baptist Church, with Funeral Service to begin at 10:30am with Dr. Dale Patterson officiating. Burial will follow at Barrancas National Cemetery, with full military honors. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to either East Brent Baptist Church, 4801 N. Davis Hwy. Pensacola, FL 32503 or to Covenant Hospice, 5041 N. 12th Ave., Pensacola, FL 32504 or to a charity of your choice. HARPER-MORRIS MEMORIAL CHAPEL is in charge of arrangements.
