Henry Nelson son of Niels Powelson

On my gg grandparents, Henry Nelson/Nielsen and Elizabeth "Lizzie" Kallis, marriage license Henry listed his father as Niels Powelsen. He did not list a mothers name. He came from Denmark and was a smitty/horse shoer for the armory in Denmark. He came over to the US in 1880 with his brother, name unknown. According to two dif stories; they got seperated in New York or they both came to Illinois and got in a fight and the brother moved out west. If you have any info on this family please contact me at admin@kallisancestry.com.

Bye 4 Now,
Kathy

Has anyone researching the Powelson name come across the Powelson names in a churchyard in Hampshire Cty, Wv.
It is my understanding that there once was a Powelson listing located in Frenchburg that had Powelson names in it. If anyone has this cemetery listing would you mind sharing some of the Powelson names on it as I think it has some of my Powelsons buried there. Thank you.

Eb was the son of Jehill (or Gehill) Powelson and was born in Groveland Twp., Oakland County MI. Jehil came to Oakland County in the 1830 and is shown as being one of the original landholders of the county. Jehill moved to Holly Twp sometime before 1870 and bought about 160 acres. His property was bisected by the Detroit to Saginaw road. There is a web site which shows the 1872 Oakland County Plat map. Go to google.com and type 1872 oakland county plat map, viola! There is also the original 1870 michigan census on-line. You can find that through the libray of michigan in lansing.

By 1870 Eb and MAry had moved north of oakland county and settled in Lapeer County, Elba Township. They had at least one child and there Eb died in the 1890's I think.

bill

Kathy,
Yes, you are definitely related to Thomas Moore. Thomas' grandfather, Powell George Powelson, was a brother to David Powelson, your g-grandfather. David was your grandfathers father. You are incorrect on your grandfathers name though. His birth name is Reid Morton Powelson. For some reason though some people called him Dick...hence the Richard you have heard. I am married to your cousin Brian, your Uncle Don's son. I have been researching the powelson line for some time now and have found information dating to the 1500's. If you are interested in finding out more on your family history, I'd be happy to share it with you.
Dawn Powelson

I know Uncle Don and I remember Brian...we used to see each other in the summers when I was much younger and would visit my grandparents in Port Alberni. My father is Ricard Powelson (aka Dick). My parents divorced when I was very young and my mom remarried. I have not seen or spoke to Dick in over ten years. Where do you and Brian live? I would love to keep in touch and hear about the research you have done on the family.

thanks for replying
Kathy

My grandfather, Richard Powelson told us stories of his family, who moved from Utah to Alberta as part of the Mormom movement. Some of the family came to Port Alberni, BC years ago for my grandma's funeral, but other than that I do not know any of them.

My mother was Dorothea Powelson, named after her great grandmother Dorthea Mikkelson Paulson. She was part of the Mormon movement to Utah. Mads Powelson was her husband.

Their son was Powell Powelson who married Janet Gourley Powelson. They lived in Goshen, Utah and then moved to Raymond Alberta Canada.

Powell and Janet had a large family including my grandfather who was the oldest child: Powell George Powelson. He had sisters Mary (married a Dahl) and Margaret (who married a Wride). My grandfather's brothers were David and John.

I have many cousins who live in Canada (Alberta and in the Vancouver area).

I am in contact with my cousins from the George Powelson line (my own aunts and uncles). I am also in contact with a few from Dahl line and with one or two from the John Powelson line who live in Edmonton, Alberta.

I am going with a cousin, Mark Zobrist, from the Dahle line, to Mexico on a humanitarian effort.

We had a Gourley/Powelson family union about 3 years ago. My mothers maiden name is Powelson. Her mother was Marilyn Sheern Powelson and her father was John Scott Powelson (Sislers). In your email you said you have a picture of Powell Powelson. Can you tell me more about him or if you know if there would be any connection between him and my family?
Thank you -Brandy Patterson

I would love to share information with you, please feel free to contact me via my email (mitca2@shaw.ca).
Powel did have one sister that remained in the USA. Margaret Ellison Powelson (born Apr 27, 1873 Goshen, Ut) died July 16, 1944 in Los Angeles, CA.
I have a information from the Vejle, Denmark 1801 census, showing family of Dorthe Dirstine Michelsen aswell. This I received from a Harry Christensen from Denmark.
With warm regards,
Dawn Powelson

My husband's gg-uncle was David Mads Powelson, born Mar 19, 1885 in Goshen, Utah, died June 5, 1958. I have Powel George listed as David's brother. I have listed 10 siblings in total. David and Powel's parents were Poul Madsen (born Feb 20, 1846 Denmark) and Janet Gourley (born Jan 25, 1848 Scotland). If these names connect with yours, I have the family history back to 1779 with various offshoots of the family and would be happy to share with you.
Dawn Powelson
British Columbia, Canada

We are of the same family. My mother was Dorothy Powelson Moore, daughter of Powell George Powelson, oldest son of Janet Gourley Powelson, daughter of Paul Gourley and Janet Glass. I was in Scotland last year and went to Fintry where Paul Gourley was born. I went to Bellshill where Margaret Glass Gourley was buried. I also went to Old Cornbroe where the Gourley family lived and worked in the coal mines. Janet Gourley married Powell Powelson and lived in Goshen, Utah where my grandfather, P. George Powelson was born. Your subject interested me. What does POWELSONS FROM PA mean? PA means Pennsylvania to me. But to Canadians, it must mean something else. You must be part of the Canadian Powelson family. My grandfather P. George Powelson was the only one of his family that did not go to Canada in the early 1900's but stayed in Provo, Utah. The rest of that family went to Raymond, Alberta. I am in touch with Zobrists, Meeks, Rolfsons, Dahles, etc. from the Canadian family. I have Janet Gourley and Powell Powelson's photograph album with photos of all the family including the photos they brought with them from Scotland. I have been very involved in sharing all of this information. Hopefully, we can share further information.
Sincerely,
Thomas Moore

Thank you for such a quick response. Margaret Ellison Powelson Wride was my mother's aunt. She lived in Raymond, Alberta, Canada for years. She came to Los Angeles with her husband George Wride when he was appointed patriarch. Aunt Margaret died before I was born, but I remember Uncle George Wride very well.

I am most eager to see the information about the Danish census. That is most interesting. I am sure you know her history--how she died before she came to Utah with Mads Poulson.

Do you know how and why the name changed from Poulson to Powelson? It is a very, very interesting story. AND, it had to do with Janet Powelson and her requirement before she consented to wed Powell Powelson. Fabulous story.

My email is TMooreSr@lcpm.net

Kindly sent,
Thomas Moore

Poul Madsen

I am fascinated with your use of Poul Madsen's name, the father of David Powelson.

Powell (Poul)'s father was Mads Poulson. Therefore, some of the first records that came up in Utah when they first arrived showed the name of the children in the old Danish formal. Mads Poulson son would be Paul Madson. But in fact, he then used Powell Poulson and his father remained Mads Poulson. But, shortly before Powell married Janet Gourley, he rolled the name over again and became Powell Powelson. But, very few people realize that Poul Madsen is in fact Powell Powelson.

I was in Goshen, Utah last week. Mads Poulson is buried there and his tombstone shows MADS POULSON. Paul Gourley is there with his second wife Ellison Jaap Gourley whom he married in Scotland.

Paul Gourley's first wife was bured in the Bellshill Churchyard in Bellshill near Aidrie, Scotland. I visited her grave last year. Humorously, I dug a bit of the dirt from the graveyard in Scotland, and the Gourley/Powelson family is gathering in Goshen this spring to scatter this "Scottish" dirt over Paul Gourley grave in Goshen--"spiritually and symbolically" joining these two fine people. All too wonderful.

I have enjoyed hooking up with you. I live in London about 40% of the year. I head off to Scotland from London at least once a year, so I have had some interesting time wandering in the footsteps of Paul Gourley. My son Thomas Charles Isaac Moore served a Mormon mission in Scotland and served in Airdrie, right where Paul Gourley was the presiding elder. Really wonderful.

You can check out my website at www.londonconnection.com.

My personal email is TMooreSr@lcpm.net

Kindly sent,

Thomas Moore

I was given
a photo of Fidelia by Janet, with her son, a baby.
Could you mail me your e-mail address so we can get
closer? I am at jopfell@en.com Live in Ohio.

Hi, I'm Amy... and after stumbling upon this, I thought I'd say hello. I am from a long ancestry of Powelson's from Eastern Ohio. I now reside in California by myself, but have family back in Ohio still. I believe that my ancestry dates back well into the 1800's and previous to that. My great great great grandmother used to own most of the land there which many factories and farms now call home. There are several photo albums at my parents' house detailing this information a bit more... but I'm telling you... these pictures are so old that you'd think it was the first snap shot ever taken. I believe myself to be the last remaining Powelson from this part of the family... I'm the third only child in a row... and most likely will not marry or change my name due to the fact that I'm quite a fiesty chic... hey it's the 21st century now, right? Anyway, if I can help anyone with their research, let me know... and likewise... I think it would be interesting to find out where my ancestors originated from... at this point... all I know is Ohio.

Write me if you like.

Amy... the other Powelson
