John W Powers (1869-1929) Grand Rapids MI

I am tracing descendants of the Power family that moved from Queens County Ireland to America c1817-1818. At this time I am particularly interested to make contact with any descendants of Clara Belle and John W. Powers or their children John W. Powers or Russell Henry Powers. John W Powers was a prosecuting attorney in Kent County in the early 1900s. John W Powers was the youngest son of Henry and Susan Power from Louisville, NY. Please contact me if you have any additional information on this branch of my family tree. I do have information on the ancestry of John W Powers for anyone interested, available at either www.powersgenealogy.org or for information on his parents and siblings at: http://www.powersgenealogy.org/03HenryPower.html

Looking for information re Anna Powers. She was married to Thomas Glasheen and had at least one child, Winifred, born Sept 14, 1869. I think she settled in Wisconsin but I don't know where she and Thomas Glasheen came from [possibly Ireland]. Her daughter married Wm Henry Farrell and settled in ND [La Moure County] probably in the 1890's.

The greatest fame of Strange Powers is that he donated the land upon which was erected St. Gabriel's, the oldest church in continuous use in Wisconsin. St. Gabriel's still stands in Prairie du Chien. Euphrasie [or perhaps Euphrasine]wife of Strange, is reputed by one source to have been the daughter of Pierre Antaya, one of the founders of the town of Prairie du Chien.

I am trying to find the parents of Calvin Powers (5 Jul 1782 - 13 May 1847). He died in Sweden, Maine, and I show his birthplace as Sanford, Maine.

A search of the Sanford ME vital records did not find record of his birth.

In a written history of Sanford (The History of Sanford, Maine 1661-1900 by Edwin Emery, 1901) I can find reference to the following Powers' between 1768 and 1784: Rev. Thomas Walter who supposedly arrived in 1768 from Newton NH; his sons Walter, Jonathan and Timothy; and a John and William and Nathan.

I would appreciate any suggestions that would help me pin down who his parents are.

Pat

Re: Catherine (Powers) Chambers in Wisconsin/Nebraska

It's unusual that there is a village listed in the girls death record and obit. So often it just lists the county or just Ireland. So that is a great clue for you. If you have the International Ancestry you could do a search but maybe you have done that.

You and I do not have enough info on our Powers to connect to others. But since there is another Powers (Nicholas) in Lafayette that could be a clue for you. He's from Waterford, maybe an area called Cheek Point but I'd have to check.

I've been told that if one is from Ardmore, chances are they were rural in Old Parish. That's what I was told.
Old Parish has the rural St. Mary's church.

My Powers as I know them born in 1830s:
Ellen Powers married James Christopher. She died 1878, Kansas.
Mgt Powers married Michael Christopher. She died 1860.
(They were probably sisters)
Thomas Powers m. Mary. Maybe he died 1902 Kansas City, KA area
Patrick Powers, died @1880, Leavenworth, KA

No parents known. The only clue we have is that James Christopher's tombstone says Ardemore. Another source says
Ellen Powers was from the same area.

Have you ever hired Waterford Heritage Survey in Waterford City to look up records? I've had some fairly good luck from them when they searched some of the names I listed previously.

The only proof I have Catherine (Powers) Chambers is from Ardmore is her eldest child's death certificate, which says she was born Ardmore, Waterford, Ireland. Also, the child's obit says she was born in Ardmore. Curious, but Catherine's child Margaret married a Wm Flaherty, and her other daughter Catherine married a John Cummings. I have not heard of Old Parish, nor do I have any other info regarding Catherine Powers family. Thanks.
Jackie

Jackie,

I meant, if you think you might be connected to the Nicholas Powers and Briget Christopher family of Lafayette Co, Wi, I could help you. It was the Lafayette location that caught my attention in your message. I don't know a lot about my Powers either. It's a fairly common name. I have other names from Lafayette and that's why I think Nicholas Powers could be connected to me because I have two other Powers in my Christopher line that married Powers.

Just for your info here are all my other names of Lafayette:
Fitzgerald, Carey, Christopher, Kiely and maybe Roche.

Were your Powers from Co.
Thanks you for the reply. I cannot document any of Catherine's siblings, so I don't know if this could possibly be her brother or not. It is not her child. I have tried to find James and Catherine (Powers) Chambers coming from Ireland for years. This is my line, and we have put a tombstone for them in Nebraska where they eventually moved to and lived and died, but I cannot find them coming from Ireland. They had a small child, Mary Ellen with them. There are a lot of James Chambers coming to New York (where 2 of his children were born) around 1850 or so, but none of them seem to fit. And like I said, I have no idea if Nicholas was related. Many thanks for the reply. What do you mean by following the family? Do you mean Nicholas's children, etc?
Jackie

Am looking for info on Henry C Powers b abt 1842 Clark CO Ind, he married Mary E Preston b Ilinois in 1867 Pottawattomie Co Iowa. In the 1870 census they are in Cass Co Iowa with one son G W Powers. His brother, George W Powers and bride, Virginia Clark are also in Cass Co, Iowa. I have traced George W and family but cant seem to locate Henry C and Mary. In 1900 I find Henry C with another Mary and stepson Jesse Hauke in Douglas Co, Nebraska. Didnt find him in the 1910 but in 1920 he is living with George W and his family in Harrison Co Iowa. His probate is dated 1922 so we assume it to be his will. Thank you for any help.
Romona Powers-Perkins romona_p@hotmail.com

My Christophers were from Ardmore so it's possible my Powers are from there too. Have you heard of rural Ardmore...an area called Old Parish?
Can you name more of your Powers of Ardmore with dates etc?

One of my Fitzgeralds of Lafayette Co. married a Catherine Flaherty.
Re: Gershom Powers, Jesse Thompson 1800s

There is a much earlier query in this forum that refers to Eliza Hatch as Gershom Powers' wife. That query is copied below.

Gershom Powers is also my g.g.g.grandfather (Hi cuz!) and I have his wife as Chloe St. John, d.Feb. 10, 1818 (2 weeks after the birth of her son, St. John Powers), buried Auburn, NY. My source is the Amos H. Powers book, Powers Family, 1884. I believe the information was contributed by Gershom's son, William Gershom Powers, since he personally knew Amos.

So we can infer that Eliza Hatch, if she was indeed married to Gershom Powers, must have been married to him after the death of Chloe St. John and before Gershom's death in 1831.
I don't have any idea who the Thompsons are.

Steve Nelson

Original post:
----------------------------------------------------------
John Olson Posted: 25 Jan 1998 6:00AM
Classification: Query
Surnames:
Originally posted: 11 Nov. 1996

Looking for much more about Eliza HATCH, Born 23 Feb. 1800.
Not sure if our families are connected. There is a Mary Powers in our family - I believe she is a cousin of my gg-grandfather. Her brothers were William and Thomas Powers. Believe they were all born in Ireland and came to the US before 1880 I have a photo of Mary taken at Lawson's Gallery in London, Ohio. I have a copy of a letter from my ggg-grandfather (James Power) in Stradbally, Co. Waterford, Ireland dated 1881 that mentions Mary and her brothers, William and Thomas. It says Thomas married and moved from Ohio to Nebraska.

I was just in Ireland and walked through Dungarvan. Nice town. Also visited Sradbally. Numerous Powers buried there but none that I recognized.

According to what I have researched, my Great Grand Father was Thomas Jefferson Powers. Born 1828, Died 4/16/1905. His father was James Odom Powers, born 11/5/1796 and lived in North Carolina. His father was Authur or Autur Powers, born 1770 also from North Carolina. Best I can tell they immigrated/migrated from Ireland. The Powers name is very well known in the Waterford County area of Ireland. The info that I am reserching now is the name La Poer which is rich in history in Ireland. I may be barking up the wrong family tree, but this may help.
