Fulton Webster Poythress

Hi, I've recently discovered I'm of Poythress decent, and am eagerly looking into any information or connections any of you may have concerning my great grandfather.

For the longest time I had the biggest problem finding out my grandmother's maiden name since she was always just a Joyce P. Yeatts on everything after marriage. Looked at the property records of her house which she lived in with her father and found out he was Fulton W. Poythress.

Now I'm not 100% sure it's Webster (it could be the William), but the Social Security Death Index has the death and birthday for Fulton Webster Poythress at the right time for my great grandfather. If anyone knows for a fact that I have the wrong Poythress, please let me know, I'm still kinda new to this whole Geneology research thing.

Anyway, that's about where my trail dries up. I know he lived in Beaufort, South Carolina for most of his life, and later with his daughter, my grandmother, and that he died in the 24th of March, 1987 and was born on the 29th of Aug. 1898. Thanks to Ancestry.com I also have his WW1 draft card listing Savannah as the city where he signed on, but that's about it for what I know about him. The Poythress homepage also mentions that his wife may have been a woman by the name of Ottie. If anyone can help me with the source on this, and even if possible, her maiden name, that'd be an even bigger help, because I'd love to know about my Great Grandmother too.

My grandmother I can find even less, and is mostly what I've gathered from what my mother can recall, and notes written on the back of pictures.

I can't find any birth, marriage, or divorce records on her. Only that her name is now currently Joyce Poythress Yeatts. She was born around 1932 (can't find an exact year), and she's lived in Beaufort SC most all her life, except when working for the army, mainly in Camp Lejeune in the 60s, and was a member of the Daughters of the Confederacy. I can't find any records of her marriage, or the birth of her two boys, but I'm assuming this is because they were more than likely born on a military base? I'm not sure how that works out, but I can't find a single mention of their births to help me more with their father. But that problem aside, I'm focusing on Poythress at the moment.

Anyway, thanks ahead of time for anyone that can help me out. I have a couple of pictures of him from later in life, so if there's a person out there collecting pictures, let me know and I'll be happy to share.

~ Aila Yeatts

If anyone has source information on the many family trees showing a marriage between Ann(e) Poythress (b. abt 1700 Virginia) and William Gilliam, that would be great. I have a 1000 year line traced back based on this marriage and would be thrilled if I could truly connect it with some decent sources.

They were supposedly married abt 1720 in Bristol Parish, VA.

I would be happy to share the line's GED with anyone who can help me verify it!

He was married to Rachel Flake and lived in and around Jenkins County GA in the late 1800's and early 1900's. This person has a high stone wall around himself. I have looked and asked for years and would like to know before I leave this green earth.

Poythress, Speed, Dortch family link, Mecklenburg, VA

I have a lot of info and sources for Tennessee Jordan Glover married to Alvy Newton Dortch. Alvy Newton Dortch's parents are William Archer Dortch (b:abt.1818) and Sarah Poythress. We have a family letter from Tennessee and Alvy's son that says, "My grandfather is William A. Dortch and my great granfather is Newman Dortch." We know quite a bit about Newman Dortch married to Sarah "Sally" Speed (m:1800). Newman is the son of David Dortch and Lucy Russell. But having trouble locating any proof of this link other than the family letter. The Dortch reference book by Mr. Perrin says Newman and Sally Speed had several children and gives two girls names. According to the 1820 Census, Newman had a son that would be William's age. Willing to share info with anyone trying to also piece together this puzzle.
Re: Pamela Poythress - VA

According to the Poythress website, the 1880 census shows a George W. Poythress, age 43 born in Virginia living in North Carolina married to a Pamela Susan age 31 (no maiden name listed). In the household are listed 10 children (one of which I believe to be my great-grandmother, Ella May Poythress) and 1 person not identified as a son or daughter, named Thomas Redmond, age 19. Not sure what any of this means, but if you have any information on this Poythress family, I would be very interested. Thanks,

Nicole Gooding-Ray
