Alus Prater is the son of Horatio R. Prater and Cynthia Jane Dodd. Horatio was born Vandalia, IL, 15 April 1873 and Cynthia in Crocker, MO, 25 December 1874.

If there is Native American heritage in his line it is not likely from Horatio’s mother's side of the family. Horatio's father was John M. Prater of Fayette Co., IL and Horatio’s mother was Mary Steins also from Fayette Co., IL. However, her parents were both from Germany. You can view her death certificate at the same web site. She died 1920 in Miller County, MO.
Going back one generation: John M. Prater was the son of Harmon Alexander Prater born c. 1807 TN and Mary Sears born c. 1800 in Virginia. I have no information of the Sears family.
Going back one more generation: Harmon Alexander Prater's parents were Holloway Prater and Anna Adair both from South Carolina. He was born 1777 and she in 1776 both in SC. Both Holloway and Anna died 1846 in Fayette County, IL. I also have no further information of the Anna Adair family.
If there are any researchers of the Fayette County, IL, Holloway Prater and Anna Adair family, or the Harmon Alexander and Mary Sears family, perhaps they know of a Native American heritage in the Sears of Adair family lines.
I am not in the Holloway Prater line; however, I am from the line that includes his brother Archelaus Prater. From what I have found, there is no Native American heritage in my line. Holloway Prater and my common ancestor is Basil Pitts Prather of Laurens County, South Carolina.
Good luck in your research.
Bob Prater, Tulsa, OK.
