I am so glad to hear from you! I should check my posts more often. My name is Karen Pritcher Webb. My father is Nathan, his father was OD, OD's father was Owen, and Owen's father was Samuel Albright Pritcher. I grew up on the farm built by Owen Pritcher at the turn of the century, just 1/2 mile from Corinth Baptist Church. I have been trying for so long to find out where Samuel came from, and how the families are all related. I have also heard the Native American story, but wasn't sure who it was that married the Native American(s). This is what I have found out so far, from census reports, visits to the SC Dept of Archives, and to the Carolinia Library at the USC campus.
I have census reports from 1800, 1820, and 1830 listing a Conrad Pricker/Preacher/Pracher in St. James Goose Creek, Charleston County. I have a copy of the will of Conrod Pricher (notice the spelling is always different), of St. James Goose Creek, which leaves most of his belongings to his wife, Monen Pricher. The will also lists children Daniel Elisha, Martha, Elizabeth, Henry, Thomas, and Benjamin. The will was written in 1823 and proved in 1835. I have a 1840 census report for a Morning Pricher in St. Matthews parish. The 1850 census has a MG Pricher living in Orangeburg district. She has with her a 17 yo son named Jacob. I also have a newspaper clipping that says that Mournin Pricher married James Sweat of Orangeburg district in 1851. I feel that this has to be Monen/Mournin that was widowed from Conrad. The other people you referred to were N.R. and Mary Pricher. N.R. appears only in the 1850 census. I have a newspaper clipping that tells of Nathan Pricher who died in 1853. I have seen tombstones in the area for both David and Daniel Pricher, listed as the sons of Nathan and Mary A. Pricher. Both of the boys died in the 1870's. Interestingly, both had been founding members of Corinth Baptist Church, along with Mary, but Daniel had been expelled for "unchristian and highly immoral conduct." This is on the record books at Corinth. The names of the girls, Susan, Ellen, and Joanna, are not on any records at Corinth. What I believe (but cannot prove) is that Samuel, Nathan, and Jacob were all sons of Conrod and Mournin. I think that Nathan and Mary only had 2 children, David and Daniel. I think that Jacob, youngest child of Conrad and Mournin, also married a Mary. I believe that this Mary was the mother of Ellen, Susan, Joanna, and Henry. I cannot explain why Mary, Susan, Ellen, Joanna, and Henry are on census reports without Jacob being listed as well. Henry Pricher's death certificate lists his parents as Jacob Pritcher and Lizzie Douglas (maiden name). Ellen Pritcher Weatherford's death certificate lists her parents as Jacob Pritcher and Mary M. Douglas. Of interest, Mary and her girls are on a census report as being neighbors with a J. Stoudemire. This man married my great-great grandmother, Regina Blewer Pritcher, after her husband Samuel died. J Stoudemire's daughter, Rebecca, was married to Samuel and Regina's son, Emilious Albright Pritcher. Also, to tie in Conrod Pricher with all of this, Regina Blewer was born in St. James Goose Creek, which is where she would have met her husband, Samuel (who I think is the son of Conrad). I know that a lot of this is speculation. I have lots of facts but need a way to tie them together. I hope that you can make sense of my ramblings, and that I have helped you in some way. Let me know what you think! My personal email is linz777@earthlink.net. Have a good day! Karen

I do not know if I have answered your query or not, but here it goes. I am Kenneth White, great-grandson of Susan Pritcher Scott. Susan was married to Jacob Scott; both died during the mid-1890's and are buried at Corinth. Susan's daughter-- my grandmother Lillie Scott White-- is buried there also. Ellen Pritcher Weatherford, Joanna Pritcher Weatherford, and Henry Pritcher are Susan's siblings. I do have a copy of the will of Susan's mother, Mary Pritcher. The 1880 census lists a Sallie Pritcher as a young child. In the 1850 Mary's husb and is listed by initials-- N.G., I believe. The 1860 or the 1870 census lists other Pritchers with her as well-- possibly additional children. The falling out you mentioned I was told by my grandfather Revelee White (husband of Lillie Scott) was the result of the fact that Susan, Ellen, and Joanna all married men of Native American ancestry, at least in part. Other spellings besides Pritcher are Preacher, Pricher, Prichard. How did you find out Mary's last name was Douglas? I have her coming from North Carolina.

Thanks for your information. I never knew Jacob was Mary's husband nor did I know her maiden name was Douglas. What i do know is that she was born in North Carolina and that she was connected to the Pritchers buried in Corinth. My grandmother Lillie Scott White is also buried there. My name is Ken White. I have always been told that there was a falling out among the Pritchers, possibly because of whom they married; some changed their names to Preacher. I firmly believe that Jacob is the brother of Samuel. The 1860 Ornageburg census lists Mary Pritchard age 30 with David 13 and Daniel 8. The 1850 census lists NR or Mg Pricher in Orangeburg 31, Mary 22, David 4. The 1880 Census also includes a Sallie. Thus, I have mary having 3 more children than you listed. Keep in touch.

I have been trying to find the exact relationship between the "two" Pritcher families for years. Apparently the falling out was covered up very well, since I grew up in Holly Hill and still can't find anyone who knows when and why the split occurred. Mary Douglas Pritcher was married to a Jacob Pritcher. Their children were Joanna, Susan, Ellen, and Henry. I have a copy of Henry's death certificate which lists his parent's names. I have been trying to find the link between Jacob Pritcher and my great-great grandfather, Samuel Albright Pritcher. Susan Pritcher Scott is buried very close to Samuel's grave at Corinth. Samuel had a son named Jacob, but he was born in 1856, which would have made him too young to be Susan's father. By the way, Samuel Albright Pritcher is also listed as a witness on Mary Pritcher's will. The logical conclusion is that Samuel Albright had a brother named Jacob, who married Mary and was the father to Susan Pritcher Scott. If only I could prove this!!! If you have any information, or need any more from me, please contact me.

My mother's maiden name was Preachers. I suspect the "s" on the end was an addition to the name Preacher at some point.

Most of the Preachers family I know of are in south Alabama or north Florida, including around Defuniak Springs, with a few in NC and SC. The family originally came from SC and NC.

So if you're looking for info on the Preacher family, I'd suggest you check out any references to Preachers too.

Sue Utter Honig

Bama Preachers

To Jennifer,

I definitely know of a Bama Preacher - in fact, I think I met her when I was a kid. I at least remember hearing about her family, because all the girls were named after US states. I don't remember how we were related to her, but we are.

Someone sent me some notes taken from the 1870 Geneva, Coffee Co, AL, census (later became Geneva County) showing an Alabama Preacher (aged 2, born in AL) living in the household of Jacob Preacher (age 40, born SC), Nancy (age 23, born AL), and 3 other children. The same source shows this family listed again on the 1880 Walton Co. FL census, with more children.

I don't know who Bama Preacher married, but I suspect I can find out from someone in my family. There's apparently a Walton Co. marriage recorded in 1895 for W.A. Preachers and M.E. Alford - could that be your GGF? The A. in "W. A. Preachers" could stand for "Alabama".

Hope this helps. I'll see about asking my family for more info. Too bad I'm going to miss our Preachers family reunion this weekend!

Sue Honig

My ancestor is James M West. He married Mary Maloy in Bainbridge Ga. I am most anxious to find out more about Mary and James. My connection is my grandfather , Edward Henry West was their youngest son. He was born in 1862. Yes this is possible ,I will explain if you send me a direct e-mail at darray7@charter.net . I believe James was killed in the civil way shortly after my grandfather was born and after that they moved to Jacksonville Florida. Maybe Mary had relatives there. I will send you some group sheets on my family if you e-mail me an address. I have a little difficulty with a very old computer and attachments. I can not attach something that is sizeable.

How are you related to John Wesley and Isabella Maloy? Yes, Mary Maloy who married James H. West Dec 7, 1834 in Decatur Co., GA is their daughter. Are you related to Mary and James? We have a group of family researchers that have been working on the family for years and haven't really been able to come up with much on James and Mary. Please let me know what information you're looking for and I'll try to assist you in your search.

Kathy Wilson
Talk about brick walls, I have been trying for many years to find the original PREACHER settler in SC (the parents of Elizabeth Preacher who married Stephen Creech will help a lot as this is my direct line). There have been lots of marriages within my extended family and members of the Preacher family(ies). Would like to share with all, my data is posted at http://www.cwoodcock.com in the 2nd data base with the name of William Woodcock, Sr., just click on his name and you will find what I have on the Preacher Family.

Please help, Edward Breland

Dr. Pritcher,
I am Ken White, and my great-great-grandmother was Mary Pritcher, who died in the mid1890's around Holly Hill, SC. A witness to her land deeds and what she left her family upon her death was Henry Preacher, whom I am told was a relative of hers. In fact, my aunt told me that our family name was Preacher, not Pritcher, but the documentation that I have, including cemetery information, confirms Pritcher. A distant Pritcher family member, who still lives in Holly Hill, told me that there was some type of falling out in the Pritcher family and some became Preachers. I do have census records for the Preachers in Colleton and Barnwell counties here in SC. There is a cemetery book of upper Colleton County that has quite a bit of information; I do not have the book. Hope this helps a little.

Iam not sure if this is all the same family. Preacher is not a common name. But there are some Preachers in the Fairfax, S.C. area. Maybe they can help. Good Luck

Thanks for the response... I am not sure my grandmother had that many bothers and sisters, but the two i am aware of moved away from florida to DC. My grandmother oreen died of a heart attack at 49 in 1977. Her sister dorothy just passed two weeks ago and she has a brother named freddy who live in greenville sc. If any of this sounds familiar to you, please let me know. I know there were more but i don't know their names.
