John Precious and Elizabeth Dudley

Classification: Query
Several online family trees (including my own!) indicate the parents of
John Precious (husband of Elizabeth Dudley) as John Precious and
Mary (Stott), and that this John Precious was born 2 Dec 1778.

John Jennings kindly pointed out to me that the Parish Register of St Mary Castlegate York 1705-1837 records that John Precious son of John Precious and Mary Stott, the one who was supposed to have married Elizabeth Dudley on 27 May 1804 at All Saint's Pavement York,
died of smallpox 5 Aug 1781 (age also recorded as 2 in the Register). He concluded that there
must therefore be another John Precious from another, as yet untraced, Precious family.

I did some searches and was both able to confirm his statement and his conclusion.

Below (complete with references, warts and all) are my findings; any feedback is welcomed.
