GGG Grandmother Quest

To the Barnes, Cates, Kates, O’Berry, Reese, Reece, Sherod, Sherrod, Wilson, Booth, Prentice, Prentiss, Crumer, and Cromer Families:

I am turning to all families that may be connected to my current quest:

My 2nd Great Grandmother was Laura Cates Barnes. Her middle name may have been Kate. According to census records, she was born in Florida; death records provide her birth date as 26 Sep 1845; passed away on 1 Nov 1907, Kissimmee, Osceola, FL. They are buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Kissimmee, FL. Laura Cates married James Alpheus Barnes about 1865. James Alpheus Barnes was the son of Benjamin Barnes, who was son of Jesse Barnes...of South Carolina.

Laura Cates and James Alpheus Barnes had the following children:
1)	Elizabeth Waller Barnes, b: 1 Dec 1867, Lake City, Columbia County FL; married James Franklin O’Berry
2)	Benjamin Reese Barnes; b 26 Jul 1869; Lake City FL; died 1870
3)	Sherod (Sherrod) Alpheus Barnes; b 4 Nov 1870; died 1872
4)	George Theodore Barnes; b 24 Mar 1872; died 1917
5)	Rosa Jane Barnes; b 10 Mar 1874; died 1879
6)	Ola Verdelia Barnes; b 17 Jul 1876; died 15 May 1936 (married Daniel T. Wilson “Dede”)
7)	William C. Barnes; b 13 Oct 1879;

Tracing the ancestry of Laura Cates has become a nightmare. I have all the census records “after” her marriage to James Alpheus Barnes. I have followed up “family” leads, expanded my search to NC, GA, TN, AL and TX. In desperation I started studying the names of her children for clues, which has led me on a very interesting study of the following families: Sherod, Sherrod, Reece, and Reese.

I have stumbled upon the following information that seems to mean nothing, but could provide a breakthrough:
•	In 1842, a Mary Reece, born 1825 in TN married a Robert H. Sherrod, born 1816 in TN.
•	On July 2, 1882 in TX, a Mary Elizabeth Cates married Granville Sherrod (born 8 May 1859 in TN, son of John “Jack” Sherrod). Mary Elizabeth Cates was daughter of William D. Cates (b 5 Dec 1831, TN) and Martha M. Booth (b 15 Aug 1841).
•	In Maine, I discovered an Ola Cates...no further information.
•	In Alabama, 1849, a Malinda Cates purchased property Alabama.
•	In “The Ancestors & Descendents of Carroll Prentice” it is stated that Samuel Wesley Prentice, (son of William Prentice) born 20 January 1809 in Louisville, Jefferson Co. Kentucky; married Malinda Crumer Cates 1848.
•	The 1850 Marshall AL census shows a Malinda Prentice living with Cates children, including a Laura Cates age 4.
•	The 1860 Marshall AL census shows Malinda and Samuel Prentice with children including Laura Prentice age 14.
•	The 1870 Marshall AL census shows Malinda and Samuel Prentice with children and Laura Cates age 24.

I would very much appreciate any help in solving the mystery regarding my GGG grandmother Laura Cates O’Berry.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Barbara Bretthauer Marquez Froyland
bfroyland@comcast.net

I am looking for any information regarding this thread. I wish that I could contact the previous posters!

My great grandmother is Mary Augusta Prentiss (b 1903 OH, d 1985 MI) who was married to Irvin P. Myers (b 1901 OH, d 1982 MI) and resided in Michigan. I think this is the Myers/Michigan connection that was aforementioned. I have pictures! please contact me!

Mary was the daughter of Hayes H Prentiss (b 1877 OH), son of Zachariah Ransome Prentiss (b 1815 NY, d 1900 OH). I am finding conflicting dates for "Ransome" Prentiss. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Ajkuchlbauer@hotmail.com

I am searching for information about Anna Prentice born 1827 in Pennsylvania. Married William Barker Moore at Lowville, PA in 1846. Moved to Aurora, Illinois in 1851 and Plymouth county Iowa in 1877. Anna died November 1905, William 1915. Both are buried in White Lake South Dakota. Am particularly interested in Anna's parents/ancestors as I have repeatedly hit a wall. Any information would be greatly appreciated as I am trying to get this pulled together for some elderly relatives.
M. Sigmond

Hi Kim-

Your Pascal Prentiss FITS! How are you related to them? I descend from Pascal's son Pascal Prentiss, b ca 1834 Ontario. I can track Pascal bn 1805 in Vermont throughout his life, but not his son. By the time of the 1871 census, the younger Pascal had a wife and five daughters. He had already abandoned them so he wasn't listed. I've searched for him since the late 1970s but haven't succeeded in learning anything more.

Hello dotsicle5,
Wow it has been a really really long time since I checked in on this thread...and I am happy to see that there are still percolations. : )
Thanks for posting your info !
Interesting constellation of surnames in your post for sure which may or may not have to do with my line. You never know unless you follow it all the way as far out as you can.
The Internet today as compared to my humble beginning back in the early 90's is just Mind Boggling.
It gets so murky when you have information based on family speculation and lore but no hard facts.
Monroe's parents were named Ned and Phoebe Cox. Where the Cox name came from is speculative. From a former owner perhaps?
But who they are is anyone's guess unless there is some paper trail or they can be found in relationship with your Cox relatives in the Slave Schedules or they are listed in a will or some other documents like bill of sale or ledger books if there are any surviving.
I found a pair of people; Ned & Phoebe not too long ago in the MS Census of 1870 with the name Bohannon...living very near by Monroe and all his Prentiss brothers and sisters who were sold to S.S. Prentiss(except a brother named Jeff) then sold later to the Whitakers.
The lore I have which came from my grandmother who was born in 1893 was: she didn't know where Phoebe amd Ned were, having heard no mention of them as a child except she knew what names her grandparents had. She did say that Monroe's brother Jeff was sold to a man named James Buchannon...now my recent lookup found these folks in the vicinity of each other but under different surnames and with a Ned & Phoebe who may be the missing Parents who once were named Cox and now are Bohannon.
Or they could be children named for Ned & Phoebe. There are a lot of folks in my Printess Line with first names liked Fanny, Ned, Phoebe. They would have to be checked by age and probability to determine if there was any chance of this pair being the missing parents or children or grandchildren. I have to try and sort all that out.
If anyone has any concrete information please contact me at my new e-mail address not the worldnet one but the gmail. Thanks alot for any light you can shed on this situation. It gets clearer all the time as more and more data is made available on the Internet.
Again Thanks for your post! -Rue
I am just beginning to research the family of William Prentiss, whose son Samuel went to Missouri. (My own Prentiss/Prentice line is from Solomon Prentice, son of the immigrant Henry.)
It appears that Samuel Prentiss (1801) married Sarah Maness 15 Jun 1854 in Jefferson Co MO. They had 2 children; Samuel Stearns Prentiss and Abbie Louisa Prentiss who married Thomas Edward COX 23 Dec 1855 in DeSoto, Jefferson Co MO. I don't know if any of this info pertains to your family; these folks are all caucasian and as far as I know, did not have slaves.
This may just be a coincidence of names and locations, but thought I'd post the info.

William Henry Prentiss/Prentice

I am looking for descendants of William Henry Prentiss (born in Washington, DC, in 1796) or his ancestors William (1754), Calbe (1721), Henry (1685?), Solomon (1646), or Henry approx 1600). Henry was born in England, Solomon through William in Cambridge, Mass. Spelling apparently changed from Prentice to Prentiss with William. My husband is also a descendant.
