Devin,
I am going to check some dates and get back to you. It is late here in Portland, Oregon and I need to get to bed. I think there are possible connections but I want to make sure. I do have a birth certificate for my father (Raymond Leo Prewett) that states that his father, Jackson Leonidas Prewett was born in Opelousas, La., 1898 and the 1900 census places both Aline and Leonidas with their mother Dora (which is really Cora) in La. Saint Landry Parish. The Leonidas Lafayette Prewett is not Jackson Leonidas Prewett, brother of Aline. I know Jackson lived longer that 1952 because I have a half sister that knew him and I have a residence for 1952 in Portland, Oregon.
I look forward to our possible discoveries.
Susan

Re: Joseph or Jack Leonidas Prewett

Well, a disclaimer: I'm just getting in to genealogy, and my family doesn't know too much about its history, especially with all the older generation passed away. So I'm not 100% on some of the connections, especially the Prewett. It doesn't help that there are multiple variations of the name.

Anyway, this is how I think it went:

Aline married Louis Isadore Bennen (b. 1887) from St. Landry Parish, LA.

They had a child, Newton Orville Bennen (b. 1918, Texas).

Newton married Teresa Gutierrez, who lived in Sonora, Mexico at the time. She came to the U.S. and they lived in Yuma, AZ (they owned "Bennen's Bakery" there).

They then had my grandmother, Mary Anne Bennen, who married Freddie J Johnson, and had my mother, Erin L Johnson, who married Kelly Humbert and had me.

I am sure all the way up to Louis I. Bennen. I am not so sure that he was married to Aline Prewett. Louis was listed in the 1930 census as being married to an "Eileen P Bennen," and living with "Cora Burnett" (b. 1861) who is listed as Louis' mother-in-law. So I thought that Eileen's maiden-name must have been Burnett.

Then I found the 1920 census, in which Eileen is listed as "Aline P Bennen." I also found someone else's research, in which they claimed that Louis Isadore Bennen married "Aline Pruitt." They had no source, they entered it as if perhaps they had asked someone in their family or something.

So after looking at various census data and everything, I came to the conclusion that Louis was married to Aline Pruitt (Prewett/Prewitt), and that is what the 'P' in Aline P. Bennen stood for.

I still don't know about "Cora Burnett", although I have found a "Cora Pruitt" with a birth-year approximately the same as Cora Burnett. So I have to do more research there.

As far as Leonidas goes, this is the info I've gotten from ancestry.com. Let me know if it is the correct person:

Leonidas Lafayette Prewett b. 2 Mar 1890 (some sources say 1898, but official VA gravestone is 1890) in Lousiana
Served as PFC in US Army in WWI.
Died Jul 24, 1951
Buried at Los Angeles National Cemetery, Section 221, Row B, Site 9.
You can find that info info here: http://gravelocator.cem.va.gov/j2ee/servlet/NGL_v1

It would be very interesting if you happen to have any insight on the Aline issue. I understand if you don't, since that's not your branch of the family, but still...

Devin
Yes,
Aline is a sister of Jackson's. I have another connection to one of his sister's relatives also.
I cannot find where Jackson Leonidas Prewett lived after 1952.
Tell me about yourself.
Jackson is my grandfather and his first son, Raymond Leo Prewett was my father.
Susan Rae Prewett Davidson

Alfred Prewett

Hi,

I have found a newspaper archive, regarding Dr Michael De Quadros, and Alfred Prewett.
Dr Michael Anthony De Quadros was my gt gt uncle, and was married to Emily Prewett.
He was in attendance when Alfred Prewett died, but refused to issue a death certificate. As Alfred Prewett was a cousin of he's wife, and was going to benefit from the will Alfred Prewett died of natural cause in 1910, but Michael Anthony De Quadros committed suicide, because of the shame of being questioned.
I don't know where Alfred Prewett fits in to the family. Emily's father William Prewett, was born c1825, Salisbury, Wiltshire. A coach body builder, and moved to lambeth after 1861.
The only Alfred Prewett I can find comes from Glos.
Please could anyone help.
Kind Regards

Karen Belton

Rebecca--good to get your e-mail address on the message board. I had lost contact with you. Linda and Steve Geiger and Diane and I got together a couple of weeks ago here in central Texas for dinner. Had a great time visiting with relatives we had never met. Hope you and I can do the same someday. Linda and Steve have been going up to a town about 25 miles from our home in Colorado for many years to visit friends. Now that we know each other, they will be visiting us. We sold our house here in Texas and are living in a new RV we purchased. We intend moving to Colorado for most of the year and play the "Snow Bird" game. Mother (Virginia [Prewett] [Beard] Filleman) died in October after several trips to the hospital. She is the last one of Bout and Minnie's children to die. Hope to hear from you soon.
Ed Beard (crusty01@earthlink.net)

I have seen lots of Prewett info, but none on the ancestors of Moses H. Prewett (Prewitt) b.1792. He married Sarah ?. He had a son, James Hurt Prewett, b. 1819, who married Mary Ann Turley. They are my ancestors. If anyone has more info, or would be interested in what I have, please contact me.

Re: John Prewett (Pruett) b:1833 Eng son of Richard Prewett b:1813 Eng

Hello! I haven't found much more on the Pruett/Prewett's lately but I did find a couple of interesting tid bits in the past few months. But nothing concrete though. My records here in Texas are very limited. I did find a family in the 1851 census that appears to fit my Richard Prewett line...

In the 1851 census in Charlcombe, Langridge
Richard PRUETT, 40, Labourer, born Charlcombe
Ann PRUETT, 38, born Walcot
Thomas PRUETT, 6, born Walcot
Ann PRUETT, 3, born Walcot

1881 Census
Dwelling 10 New St
Census Place Bristol St Philip & Jacob Out, Gloucester,Eng,
Richard PREWETT Head M Male 68 Bath, Somerset, England Genl Labourer
Ann PREWETT Wife M Female 68 Bath, Somerset, England

I only have access to 2 British census records and I think those are the only 2 online. I did find another record that might fit the above Richard Pruett age 40.

Possible Richard Prewett
Shropshire: Ludlow-Parish Registers, Hereford Diocese
Shropshire Co, England
22 Jul 1778 Richd., s. of Daniel Prewett & Teverea

Births of their children on ancestry.com
Richard b:22 jun 1778
Daniel b:25 apr 1777
Thomas b: 23 mar 1783
John b:4 jun 1780

I do remember finding a couple of records of a will and a another type of census but I can't find my notes on it right now. Unfortunatly my resources for the English records are almost non-existant. I am still learning how the English kept their records. Do you still live in England? Did you notice that on one of the census records the place name is Gloucestershire, the same you were born? Interesting.

Prewetts/Prewitts/Pruetts/Pruitts from Carmarthen Wales?

This is a cross post. Let me me know if it's annoying to see it in other Prewett boards. I'm just trying to reach more people.

The Prewett name of various spelling supposedly originated in the Carmarthen area of Wales. This is according to the House of Names: http://www.houseofnames.com/xq/asp.c/qx/prewitt-coat-arms.ht....

However, I did a search in the British Telecom phone book (http://www.thephonebook.bt.com/publisha.content/en/find/resi...) and there are none of the various "Prewetts", near Carmathen now. On the other hand, there does seem to be a bunch of them in England proper, in an almost straight line from Bristol on the West Coast through Salisbury where Thomas Prewitt, the first Prewitt to reach America came from, to Southampton, on the East Coast of Southern England.

There appear to be only a few Prewetts in Wales now, but no where as many as in Southern England, and maybe the ones in Wales came from Bristol or the like, which is only 79.5 miles as the crow flies, from Carmarthen, as this website points out, http://www.infoplease.com/atlas/calculate-distance.html.

The idea that they came from Carmarthen Wales is research sold by the House of Names Society. I suppose they are good scholars there, but I would like to know their sources.

I would like challenge others to do similar research and improve on my rough data. I know there is a function somewhere in Ancestry.com that will display a map of the UK and the distribution of a surname on it, but I can't find it. My research was perhaps cursory, but I did put in a lot of Prewett spelling variations in the BT lookup system for Carmarthen, and nothing came up.

The site does cover Wales, because when I put in a name like "Singer" I got eight or so entries for the Carmarthen area.

Hey Linda--Great to hear from you. Glad you came across these links to the Prewett family going back to 2001. I know that Fern was in contact with mother. The family might have lost touch with her whereabouts in the last couple of years. She is now in a retirement home. Doing OK but slowing down. Having some heart problems, but contoling with medication. Pass this information on to remaining family members, if you don't mind. Virginia (Prewett)Filleman, C/O Regency of El Paso, 221 Bartlett #314, El Paso, Tx. 79912. (915) 471-1593. I would love to share information and pictures. I have attached a couple to this message that I thought you would enjoy. The one of Buster, Mother, Reba and Mother's husband George was the last with all of Bout and Minnie's children together. These pictures of Stony Dell are interesting too. I'm glad I was able to get the one of cousins Carl Prewett(Vernon's son) and Mother at our G-G-Grandparent's (Clark & Sarah) grave at the Pisgy Cemetery outside of Jerome. We took that one on our last trip to Rolla in 2003. Let me have your e-mail and I will let you into my web site to look around. Mine is crusty01@earthlink.net. I think you will get kick out of it. Cousin Ed
