I am a Priebe from Chatfield, MN. My Grandfather was born in 1937 but does have a few older brothers. What is your grandfathers name. I can talk to mine and see if he happens to know anything. I do know there are two separate Priebe family lines in Chatfield that are unrelated.

My grandfather is from Minnesota and I think the name of the town is Chatfield, MN and he was also born in 1935. I do know that he has found out a couple of years ago that he has half siblings and found a long lost brother. Who knows maybe there is another.

Amanda

After further review, I have made a mistake. My Irma Priebe was born in 1904. Her grandparents immigrated from Prussia through Baltimore MD in 1865 and emigrated to Scotland Co MO from there. Irma and her brother Roscoe were in Chicago in the early 1930's during the Depression. Roscoe is my grandfather. There seem to be many similarities in our details.

The Irma Priebe that I have is Samuel Wesley's daughter, who would have been Dorothea's granddaughter. I have her born in 1904. Samuel Wesley was the 4th child of 8 and the names in your obituary match the names I have as his siblings.

Dorothea is my great-grandmother and I have copied her obit below. It says they had 8 children, all of whom were still alive at the time of her death, but does not list Irma. Where in the lineup did she fall?

Obituary from the Memphis Reveille (Missouri), June 22, 1922 (some of it was illegible):

OLD RESIDENT OF COUNTY PASSES TO REWARD

With Mrs. Dorothy Priebe of the Etna community, one of the oldest settlers of the eastern part of Scotland County passed to her reward. She came here about 56 years ago and has been one of the determining personalities of this neighborhood. Mrs. Priebe (nee Elias) was born "across seas" on September 15, 1842, and had she lived until Sept. next she would have been 80 years of age. In Baltimore, Maryland she united in marriage with her life companion, William Priebe. To this union eight children were born - all of whom are still alive. In early life she united with the Methodist Episcopal Church. Up to the end she retained a very lively interest in the affairs of the kingdom and Christian experience. She was a very active worker in the different church organizations. So, as a community builder, as a Christian and church worker, but especially as a home maker and mother she was a tower of strength. By precept and example she taught the way in which all of us should go. Mrs. Priebe had been in failing health for some time. What careful nursing and loving care could do was done to relieve her suffering - and the end brought rest to a weary body. She closed her eyes in inst. (?) June 12th. The funeral took place on Thursday, June 15. The services were conducted by Rev. W.A. Dahlem of Truxton, Mo., a former pastor and friend of the family. Mrs. Priebe was preceded in death by her faithful husband, William Priebe, about six years ago. She is survived by Albert, William and Samuel of Wyaconda; Mrs. Mary Kemper and Mrs. Lydia Kasiske of Wapello, Iowa; Paul of Williamstown; Henry of Springfield, Mo. and Benjamin of Etna. Besides these she leaves forty grandchildren and three great grandchildren and a large host of other relatives and friends who will long remember her as a benign soul.
He married Dorothy (Dorothea) Elias. He lived most of his life in Scotland Co. Missouri. My Irma H. Priebe would be my great aunt, related to Roscoe Marcellus Priebe, my granddad.
Do you have any matches with my information?
Thanks

Walter Priebe was my great-great grandmother Auguste Heyn's half-brother. She was the oldest child and he was the youngest with a 34 year spread between them. Walter's first wife Katherine Melcher died within a year after they were married. She is buried in Rochester. I have pictures of the whole family taken in the 1890s. I would be happy to share them with you.

I started the fact that August Priebe's first wife was a Ponto. One of his granddaughters has written it down when she was elderly. I have since found proof that his first wife and the mother of his first set of children (including Auguste Priebe Heyn, my great-great grandmother) was Anne Rosine Gramss. That still leaves the Priebe - Ponto mystery. Older members of the family said that we were related to the Ponto's but they did not known how. I wonder if Gottfried Ponto was August Ponto's father. That would make August Priebe & August Ponto "Brady Bunch" brothers. It is to bad the records for Czarnikau are so spotty. You answer one question but then create two more mysteries.

Hi "GDHeyn"
I have an August Priebe, born 181 who married an Anna Rosina Ponto (I have no other info for Anna Rosina and don't know if she was August's first or second wife). Anna Rosina was most likely a close relative to our August Ponto but I have not found any records from that time period to substantiate that. I know the Heyns, Priebes and Pontos in the Rochester area of Minnesota have close ties. In 1875, our Rudolph Ponto (then age 13) was living with Albert and Augusta Heyn in Elgin, Wabasha County, Minnesota. This was the same year that Rudolph emigrated from Posen, Germany with his mother, brother and sister. I'm guessing Albert Heyn was the same as Ferdinand Albert Heyn and Augusta Heyn was the same person as Emilie Augusta Priebe (a daughter of Anna Rosina Ponto and August Priebe). And so the puzzle continues ... good luck in your research! Renée Ponto

My Great-Great-Great Grandfather was August Priebe who was a brother to Julianna Priebe. There also was a family connection to August Ponto but I have never been able to confirm what it is. August Priebe's children and August Ponto's children are very interwoven in emigration, church, census and other records like they were cousins of something.

Hello Brent,
Do you have information on Julianna Priebe's mother "Anne Christine TORNO" and father "Daniel Priebe"? If so, Julianna's mother supposedly married Gottfried Ponto in 1834 after Daniel died.
My husband's great grandfather was August Ponto (b.1825 Radosiew, Posen) who lived in Minnesota near Rochester, just a few miles from Julianna and Peter Ponto's daughter, also named Julianne and her husband Albert Henke. Priebes and Henkes attended the funerals of our Pontos but the relationships were not detailed in the obituaries that I have. I am sure your Peter Ponto and our August Ponto are closely related, probably brothers ... or their fathers may have been brothers.
I'd love to hear that you already have some detailed information/records on Peter and 'Julia'. Maybe we can piece together one more puzzle piece?

Renée Ponto

Albert Prieve/Preibe Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Just discovered a strong connection to Albert Frederick PRIEVE, who married Bertha BERNDT in Germany before they entered USA through Philadelphia 1892. They went to Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Their children were: Gustave, George, Anna, Hermann and Lene (Helene?). Bertha died 1898 and Albert soon remarried to Anna TREICHEL, whose maiden name was BUNKE. She brought two sons to the marriage, who were Arthur and Erwin TREICHEL.

Albert PRIEVE had a brother who entered America several years before him, and his name was recorded August PRIEBE, who lived in Dubuque, Iowa, and his line continued to use it. I've also seen it written Priewe, etc. so it must not have been an easily Americanized name.

We have made contact with one of the August PRIEBE descendents and know some of their history. Our goal now is to locate heirs of the Albert and Bertha PRIEVE line to learn more of that family, and hope there are also photos they will share.

Our connection to Albert PRIEVE is through his oldest son, Gustave.

If you can help, we'd be very grateful. He married a Louisa Becker born 1852 in Germany, I believe they were married here as their four children, Lena, ANna, Augusta and WIlliam were all born in WIsconsin. Agusta married a CHrles Zinn and ended up in San Diego, CA. My connection is with Louisa Becker Priebe, her sister Pauline was my great grandmother. Just found this group, any help would be wonderful! Thank you! Sandy

Edwin Herman Priebe born July 5, 1880, immigrated to Baltimore, with parents Alvina & Erdman in 1882. Siblings Ernest (1882), Martha (1900) (she married Frederick Burton)and Erdman (1893) who died young.

Edwin married Amelia Margaret Biles in Baltimore in 1905. I can find them in the 1910 census and Edwins WWI Draft registration shows wife, Amelia, but they appear to disappear off the face of the earth after that. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The only thing I can suggest is to check with Vital Statistics in Minn. His birth would have been recorded. You have his mother's surname and your husband's given name and the date of birth.
My Priebe ancestors were all from Chicago. One did go to South Dakota, and one to Montana.
I was born in 1933 and my Mom was born in 1912. Maybe some relative got the name of the state wrong.

My paternal grandmother was Erma Priebe born in Chicago. She married Alfred H. Chrishop. I haven't been working on the Priebe side for awhile so I would have to look things up. It seems to me we had a female ancestor that went to Minn. We are Lutheran, and the Lutheran Church is very good at helping with information. Great Grandparents are Johann and Wilhemmina. They came from Prussia I believe it was 1872. I will help as much as I can.

Thank you for your reply. The connection to priebe is through marriage on my mother's side. Her cousin married a priebe in Wisconsin. Her cousin was from Germany. I'm trying to locate any relatives on the priebe side to try and locate the Tischer/Koenig relatives that relocated to Wisconsin. If I'm able to find them it will answer a lot of questions. My mom is 82 and has been diagnosed with dementia, so time isn't on my side. I came across the priebe connection from a letter I found written in 1954.

My email address is sweettreatbaker@verizon.net
Thanks,
Virginia Castillo

My husband was born a Priebe, in St Paul, MN on 28 Aug 1935. His adopted parents are deceased and he would love to find some REAL relatives before he dies (gracious, the man is over 70); anyone willing to help? Lutheran Orphanage wants an arm and a leg to turn loose of his birth certificate. He's a wonderful and gentle person and I can't imagine anyone not knowing their real family, regardless of the reason!

His adopted sister said his grandfather was a lutheran minister, we can't find anything. His mother was a priebe and nursed him for 3 months and he was born with a club foot. His birth name was Dennis

The only thing we found was a picture of a priebe male about 20 yrs ago and after asking about my hubby, they stopped writing?

Hopefully that will help jog someones memory. We were just there in ST. Paul a couple of weeks ago and hit so many dead ends.
Ah, if it were only that easy; records are sealed with adoptions and that is where the "hostage" situation with LS comes in! Although his parents are nearly 100, we would still have to pay them over $600, come in for an interview (we live over 1800 miles away) and they get 6 months to find the parents and ask for permission; then if they can't find them (we liken it to standing in front of a tombstone for 10 minutes, not getting an answer, and saying ok, you can see your birth certificate now) then they will release the original certificate. I went as far as the MN governor's office with no luck. Thanks for still thinking of me. Maybe someone will see the post that knows something.

Hmm, will run that one thru the census. Yeah, its not hard to get them wrong; I have found that in researching my side of the family and I have names! Sometimes what I remember helps me weed thru the mistakes.

We have a bunch of information (non identifying) from the lutheran society but some of it contradicts what his adopted sister says. She says his mother was a teenager of a minister who got in the family way. we were told by the society that his mother was a nanny in a home and had a fling with the father of the household; that the father was a Catholic German and his mother a Lutheran German and came from a BIG family of boat builders and saw sharpeners.

Not sure which story to pursue as we have no "identifier" to prove either. If anyone out there knows anything, we are just looking for closure or cousins. Now that it's okay to talk about illegimate children, perhaps it will be easier. It is very, very possible both parents are dead, but...his mother nursed him for 2-3 months, so she obviously cared a great deal about him.
Thanks for your help.
