Re: Is there a connection between the Scottish and Norfolk Primrose's

The Glastonbury Survey of
1189 contains a curious hint that two cottages are more valuable
than one half-virgate: two cotlands were ruined during the war,
and they were thrown together into half a virgate, although it
would have been more advantageous to keep two houses on them,
that is two households.

Taken from: http://socserv.mcmaster.ca/econ/ugcm/3ll3/vinogradoff/vill3....

The virgate was a unit of land area measurement used in medieval England, typically outside the Danelaw, and was held to be the amount of land that a team of two oxen could plough in a single annual season.[citation needed] It was equivalent to a quarter of a hide, so was nominally thirty acres. A ‘virgater’ would thus be a peasant who occupied or worked this area of land, and a ‘half virgater’ would be a person who occupied or worked about 15 acres (61,000 m2).

The Danelaw equivalent of a virgate was two oxgangs, or ‘bovates’: as these names imply, the oxgang or bovate was considered to represent the amount of land that could be worked in a single annual season by a single ox, and therefore equated to half a virgate. As such, the oxgang represented a parallel division of the carucate. Accordingly, a 'bovater' is the Danelaw equivalent of a half virgater.

‘Virgate’ is an anglicisation of the Medieval Latin virgatus. The historic English translation was yardland.
My connection to the Primrose family was with Lady Primrose who was the widow of the third Viscount Primrose who lived in Essex St. off the Strand, London. She was a supporter of the Jacobite Cause. This was linked to the help Flora McDonald gave to Bonnie Prince Charles (Jacobite) when she helped him to escape to the Isle of Skye. My family is a direct descendant of Flora McDonald (in those days this was spelt Macdonald but was of the same clan)
The book Flora MacDonald by Hugh Douglas mentioned Lady Primrose's support for Bonny Prince Charlie.
I hope this may be of some use.
Heather

No, sorry, that's all I have. Some researchers have given her name as Pressgroves. So, it is a real dilemma. Can't find her marriage license or death record. Both she and her husband, Daniel Osteen, were deceased by 1870, as their children were spread amongst relatives to raise. Any info anyone has would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Janice

My Grandfather always told me he was 2nd cousins or something to the Earl of Rosebury? I haven't found the connection yet? I have gone back to my GGGGreat Grandfather who was John Archibald PRIMROSE b. 19 Sep 1809 Prince Street, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. John married Isabella ROBERTSON 9-3-1834 Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. Johns parents were William and Janet Primrose nee BROWN m. 27 May 1809 in Edinburgh. John had brothers George Guild PRIMROSE, William PRIMROSE and a Ebenezer Brown PRIMROSE. These are the only siblings i have been able to trace.
Have you found any connection?

Thanks
Kate
finningfamily@iinet.net.au

Hello, my brick wall is the marriage of Milley(Emma) Primrose to Daniel Osteen, in Bedford County, Tennessee. She would have been born around 1830 and he in 1827, according to the 1860 Census of Bedford County. We can find no information on the Primrose family, who her parents were, etc. If anyone can help, please let me know. Thanks.

My mother was a Primrose, from Scotland. My neice has been trying to trace the family and we have it back 3 generations into Scotland. She has made contact with a Carol Primrose who is a librarian in Scotland and found out that many records were destroyed, but Carol said she would help as much as possible. I have several pages of data on the Primrose family, some of it was given to us by an aunt that was born in 1882 and was a geneologist. I don't get back to this message board very often so if you could send a note with what you want to Thorn, PMB 293, 848 N Rainbow, Las Vegas, NV 89107 then I will research and respond. Sorry to be so old fashioned, but I am very busy and just don't get to the computer that often.
Looking forward to hearing more.

Arthur's father was Adrian Primrose, a well-known violin teacher and creator. I don't know about his spouse. I would like to get more information on birth and death dates, etc. Contact me if you have any. Thanks.

DATA Message RE: The Marshallite, 1929 John Marshall High School yearbook (Richmond, VA).

This yearbook lists the members of the Senior class of 1929, faculty members, members of the Corps of Cadets, and many members of various clubs (not all). Unfortunately, it does not list the names of the members of the Junior, Sophomore or Freshmen classes (only officers listed for those classes). It includes the following name(s):

Primrose, H. W.

There's over 1,900 records, so I've only listed the name(s), as it appears in the yearbook in this message.

If you would like to view all of the information that I extracted from the yearbook, I have uploaded it to my freepages genealogy web site. The link to the first page of these extracts on my web site is:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sassytazzy/family/r...

Or it can be accessed through the "General Research" link on the main page at:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sassytazzy/index.ht...

Please note that my site contains free genealogy related data & IS NOT a "commercial" or "advertising" site. Until I can get back out & do research on my own families, my hobby is posting free genealogy related data online that may help other reseachers. I put all kinds of genealogy information on my web site (including information others send to me to share on the site), not just data about the families I am researching (therefore I can't answer questions about everyone I have listed on the site). I hope the information I've put online helps someone with their research . . .

Susan :)
Sassytazzy's Online Genealogy Research Library
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sassytazzy/index.ht...

You can e-mail me any information if you would like at cindypons@aol.com. Thank-you.
