Hello Nora!
Although the information you have is very close— too close to be coincidental – however, I am afraid this does not tally with the information in the family bible...will do further research and get back to you. There was no Belle (surviving or otherwise), Paul is too young, it's "Ethel Nora", I am afraid g-grandfather's name was not Frank (on his portrait & other papers). Other names are not spelled correctly, dates are not right. But, you see the closeness of it all.

There is a lot of information in terms of birth, death, inheritance, immgration and other records that can be consulted as well.

Will post again in a few days with what I have learned. If you are my cousin (and, I hope you are) -- I am very please to have found you. Lezlie

Hi Marilyn,
Samuel and Sarah Elizabeth Probasco were married March 27, 1843 in Brown Co., Illinois and later traveled out to California with the Probasco family.
This Elvin in the census is not really Elvin. It is acutally a female. Her name is Elvina D. DeMoss and she is their child. When Sarah died, Samuel returned to Brown County, Illinois were he married Lucinda Flynn Nov. 8, 1866. His daughter Elvina came with him to Illinois and I have traced her life. She is actually listed with Samuel in the 1870 census as Melvina and then in the 1880 census, but she is listed in Samuel and Lucinda's child, Edward's household as a half sister and her name is finally listed as Elvina.
Source: 1870 Ralls County, Saverton Township, Missouri Census Record
*Listed under Danoss on Ancestry.com
60 55	DeMoss, Samuel	53	M W	IndianaFarmer	100
Lucinda	23	F W	IllinoisKeepHouse
Edmond 2	M W	Illinois
Melvina	10	F W	California

Source: 1880 Ralls County, Saverton, Township, Missouri Census Record
Listed under Lucuda Sheperd on Ancestry.com
306 309	Sheperd, Lucinda mother w f 30keephouseIll NC NC
Demorst, Edward son m w 13no occupationIllIll
John R. son m w 7 Ill Ill Ill
Samuel son m w 3 Mo Ill Ill
Elvina half sisterf w 21no occupationCal Ill Ill

The Lucinda Sheperd listed above them is actually Lucinda Flynn Demoss who remarried a Sheperd after Samuel passed away.
Not sure of Samuel's death date, but think it is between 1877-1879. I have not been able to locate a death date or a cemetery for him, but would really like to find what happened to Samuel and Luinda.
Elvina D. DeMoss Jones Mosley died Sept. 8, 1939 in Center, Center Twp., Ralls Co., Missouri and is buried at Barkley Cemetery in New London, Ralls Co., Missouri.
If you would like more detailed info about Elvina please let me know. Are you searching for Samuel also or are you involved in another line?
If you have anything else on Samuel or his other children, please let me know.
Thanks!
Susie

Yours is packed full of great information which many of the other genealogies do not have. I am enjoying seeing your updates!!!!

Nora
You are correct. I should have gotten up and went to the research site before I answered that question. I have never found the marriage in the Illinois State Marriage listing, but it is found in the family bible. Sorry for any trouble that may have caused. They were married March 27,1843 in Brown County Illinois.
Carol

Carol, I could only find Samuel Demoss and Lucinda Flynn's marriage record in the Illinois Statewide Marriage Index online. I know Samuel and Sarah Probasco were married because of Jacob P. Demoss showing up on the 1900 Federal Census for Jacob P. Probasco, Sarah's brother, listed as a nephew.

Samuel and Sarah DeMoss had a number of children. She died in 1861 and he left California and remarried in Illinois at the home of her brother John DeMoss to (I would have to look up the spelling on the first name but she was first cousin to Rebecca) Flynn. He then had three more children all boys in Illinois and Missouri.
Carol

I am decendant from his brother, William Henry (b 11-12-1821 and d7-9-1867)My GGgrandparents were also in Mt Pleasant since my Great grandmother was married there and my grandmother went to college there.
Anna Maria Probasco Butler (1850) Edgerton (1865) Hegeman (1873 (probate) and 1880)?
There's a likely looking one married to a John W Hegeman in Brooklyn in 1880. I can't find her in between.

Arvilla Catherine Probasco Weare ? married Frederick Rising abt 1885 and had a son Oscar E b. abt 1885. I know this from family stories. My grandfather referred to Oscar as "a nephew of my grandmother [Julia Probasco] Bradford." In 1900 Arvilla had 2 children living so I think there was perhaps another marriage and child??? Arthur Russell Weare absolutely disappears. In 1880 there's an Arvilla Fenton who checks out, right age, father b. NJ, mother b. NY
She has a daughter age 6, birthplace of father unknown....What to make of this I don't know.

Margaret Hortense Probasco married abt 1868 David Prosser Tompkins as his second wife and had 2 children Grace and Roscoe. David d. 7 Sep 1907, is buried with his first wife Mary A. Sprague and his parents Benjamin and Susannah in Glenwood Cemetery, Geneva, Ontario NY but I don't know where Margaret Hortense is buried.

Charles's death certificate is probably available and that could determine who he was. I have some other Monroe Co. queries so maybe I'll see about it sometime.

Thank you for your help.

Carol B.

Anna Maria was married before to an Edgerton according to the 1865 New York State Census for Ontario Co., NY. She is listed as widowed in that census. That is the only other info I have on her. I didn't have the Hegeman marriage and will have to do further research on that. William G. Probasco married his first cousin, Mary G. Probasco. I have one marriage for Arvilla to an Arthur Russell Weare, son of Samuel C. Weare and Martha W. Arnold. Who was her other husband? I have tried to find census records for Arthur Weare but have not found any yet. I did find his Civil War record before he married her. Did she go by the name of Arvilla or Catherine/Cate or ?? I show Hortense's husband as David Tompkins. Is that correct?

As far as for Charles, that could be him. I have a census record which I suspected was him but the age was a big off:

Reed, William C, head, m, w, 56, marr once, 32 yrs, b. NY, parents b. NY, farmer, home farm, employer, can read/write, own mtg farm 19
Reed, Hattie E., wife, f, w, 48, marr once, 32 yrs, 2 children born, 1 living, b. NY, parents b. NY, can read/write
Probasco, Charles, hired man, m, w, 52, single, b. NY, parents b. NY, farm laborer, general farm, can read/write
(Seneca, T624-1058, p. 202A ED 115DW 29 FM 30 (19 Apr))

However, that could also be a census taker mistake. I have not been able to tie this census to anyone Charles in my database and the location seems to fit this Charles. If it is him then the Charles killed in Rochester is probably him, though he would have been in his 60s by then.

Hi Nora,
When Christian's will was probated 9 Jan 1874, all the children were listed. So we know that they were: "Anna Maria Hegeman in Brooklyn NY, William C. Probasco residing in Seneca Falls, NY Julia Bradford residing in Ithaca NY, Hortense Tompkins residing in Geneva NY, Caroline L. King residing in Geneva NY, Phebe Chadwick residing in Phelps, NY Arvilla _____ of _______and Charles S. Probasco also residing in Geneva his children your petitioner his widow and no others him surviving"

I have a clear picture of William, Julia, Hortense, Caroline and now Phebe. I am not sure about Anna Maria --there were an awful lot of Hegemans in Brooklyn. Arvilla married at least twice and I have gaps in her story. Charles seems to vanish. Unless he was the one in this item from the Geneva Daily Times?
12 Dec 1919 Charles PROBASCO killed by falling down elevator shaft in Rochester.
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~darmi/gleaningsfrom...

John Kirtland and Julia Probasco Bradford's twin daughters b. May 1870 were named Carrie (d. 20 Jul 1870) and Eva H (d. 9 Nov 1870).

I'd be happy to know more about Anna Maria, Arvilla and Charles if you have anything.

Thank you,
Carol B.

Wow - you are quick - Yes Joseph Kelly born 18 Oct 1899 was my grandfather - He died Sep 1969 and was an English Professor at Eastrn Michigan University. According to my mother, Mary Agnes and Andrew Probasco promised her mother on her death bed that that they would wed. Andrew's mother Rosana was a friend of Mary Agnes mother. Anyway, my father's name is Joseph Daniel Kelly and he was born 11 Feb 1934 in Missouri. Andrew Probasco Jr. was born on 2 Jun 1899. He remarried a woman named Mabel Linau she died in California in 1978 - They also had a child named Andrew Herman Probasco born 1929. Do you have info on Andrew Sr. and His father Hiram?

Hi Nora:

My grandmother Mary Agnes McGill was married to Andrew Probasco Jr. b. 1899 they had 2 children Mary Ellen b. 1827 and Andrew b. 1829 - Andrew Probasco Jr. left my grandmother when Mary Ellen and Andrew were babies. My Grandmother remarried (my Grandfather Joseph Patrick Kelly)and he adopted both of the Probasco children and they had my Dad. They legally changed their last name to Kelly and Andrew changed his name to Jack Kelly. Jack lives in MI and I believe Mary Ellen is in Georgia. I have not seen them in years - but from what I understand they never mention their birth father.

this is the information that I have on the family also. On Andrew Jr. I do not have a wife for him. I know that he died in 1957 in Ca. I'm willing to communicate with any of you Probasco researchers. I have this family back to mid 1700's and am not doing anymore work on them, but if any of you folks want some blanks filled in, email me, and I will see if I can help you. I worked on this line several yrs back, so will need to refresh a bit.
sudzi6648@yahoo.com
Patty

I was recently reading the Abilene Kansas Reflector newspaper for June of 1895 and came across the death notice for Mrs. Jason Morse daughter of George Probasco. June 10, 1895 Mrs. Jason Morse died in childbirth and the child died too.
My connection is not close but Jessie (Steele) Probasco had a sister Helen Louise Steele b. 1880 who married Lewis Elmer Chase who was related to me. I once lived in Loveland, Colorado and knew a Probasco family that ran a store there who were from Dickinson County too.

Merry, I am doing research on this family as well as all Probasco families. I would be glad to share with you what I have. I would also like to know more about Mary Ellen and Andrew H.

Nora Probasco

Hi Merry,

I have info on Andrew Sr., Hiram and their ancestors. I have been compiling a large database of all Probascos and affiliated families. I have been trying to tie each line back to the Probasco immigrant ancestor, using Probasco DNA to prove it. I am also trying to capture all Probasco descendants whether they carry the Probasco name or not. Thank you for the additional info. You helped clear up the mystery of Andrew Herman Probasco. I found his death record in CA which listed his mother but not his father. Now I have been able to connect him to his appropriate father. He died in an auto accident at age 29. The one mystery I still have is what Hiram Probasco's wife, Elizabeth's, maiden name was.
There are no parents listed on her death certificate, yet I noticed you list her name as Elizabeth W. Fox in your Kelly Family Tree on Ancestry. Is that her maiden name? I found a marriage record for Hiram S. Probasco and Elizabeth W. Menge who married 18 Nov 1871 in Marion County, IL. However, I found them listed with 2 children, Laura and Bernard, in the 1870 Federal Census. Could there have been 2 wives named Lizzie or Elizabeth?

Hi Merry,

Thanks for the info. That explains why I could not find any records for Andrew H. Probasco b. abt 1929. Would you happen to have his birthdate so I could add that to my Probasco database. Also, I found a death record in the Social Security Index for Joseph Kelly who died Sep 1969 which showed his birthdate as 18 Oct 1899 and that his death location was Ypsilanti, Washtenaw Co., MI. Is this him? And what was your father's name? Since he was a step-brother to the Probasco children, I want to list him also in my Probasco database.

Hi Patty, It was good to hear from you again. Thanks for the additional info. Just from looking at the marriage date for Hiram S. Probasco and Elizabeth Menge, it looks like she was married before and that Laura and Bernard are from that marriage? They probably just took Hiram's name? So Fox must be her maiden name?
