Re: PROFFITT, William b abt 1817 TN Res Grainger Co, TN

Back again --

William was born abt 1817 in Tennessee and married in Grainger County, Tennessee. If he is a child of David and Mary (Bright) Proffitt, the only place this is acknowledged is in the History of Massac County, Illinois. (not a real reliable source)

I have just located the following in the 1830 census in Grainger County, Tennessee - Reads PROFFET, Indexed as PROFFER --
Gabriel (age 20 to 30) and family,
Joseph (age 20 to 30 with family) and
Mary (age 50 to 60) no spouse and she has living with her one male 10 to 15 (could be William), one male as 15 to 20 (could be Harvy), one female 10 to 15 and two females age 5 to 10.

If this is Mary (Bright) Proffet, it means her husband probably died between 1825 and 1830 and there may be additional children or additional relatives. It is not impossible that these children are all Mary's children, but a bit unlikely, especially the youngest females. Does anyone know more about some of the daughters? Did any of the children die young and leave children?

What are your thoughts regarding William being a child of David and Mary Proffitt?

Any help or ideas would be appreciated.

I have a William PROFFITT married to a Jane. In 1850 lived in Grainger TN. Ch: Woodson S ; Sarah E ; William M ; Thomas W ; and Eliza Jane Bell. By 1860 the family resided in Massac County, Illinois. I find them there in 1870, 1880 and the children and grandchildren up to the 1930's and later.

In the 1880 census, William stated he was born in TN, his father in TN and his mother in VA.

Any ideas on determining his parents? Definitely someone who moved from prob VA to East Tennessee, Unless William is mistaken about the location of his parents birth.

Thanks,
Diane

My mother was a Proffitt, raised in Goochland Co. and the info I have on them is from census, birth or death records that I have copied at the state library or at the Goochland Courthouse.
Robert N. Proffitt, born abt 1808, died May 10, 1887, married to Judith, born abt 1813. Their children are:
Mary,no info, Elvira "Eliza" J, born about 1840 in Nelson Co., Arabella born about 1848, John born abt 1850 and Alfred born abt 1852. I have Alfred married on April 15, 1880 to Betty L. Chappell, born abt 1858. I don't have anything linking them to anyone, I have just copied anything "Proffitt" on any of my visits to the libraries or courthouse.

Jonas Profit arrived in Virginia in 1606; thirteen years before the "Mayflower." Jonas Profit is listed as a sailor and then as a soldier. There were about 500 colonists when Smith left, at the beginning of October 1609 due to a gun powder accident. I wonder if Jonas accompanied him on this return trip to England. Jonas Profit is not listed later on Jamestown records. Williamsburg, Virginia has several streets named for Jonas Profit.

Jacob Prophett settled in Virginia in 1623. Shortly after Jacob Prophett arrived in Jamestown, he is listed among the dead on the Virginia Crown Census of 1625.

Proffitt's from Kentucky

I'm very new to researching my family history. There are a few things I know for certain but the rest is just pick up pieces that others have found on this site. I have not checked these for acuracy as of yet. My name is Jason William Proffitt. My father is Joseph Layton Proffitt. His father is William Layton Proffitt, but goes by the name Layton. His father was Albert Proffitt and his father I believe was Blevins Proffitt. I know they are from around the Clay County, Kentucky area. My grandfather now lives in Cincinnati, OH. If anyone has any info on this line of the Proffitt's, I would love to hear from you. I can be reached at either work email: jason.proffitt@suncocarriers.com or my personal email: jasonproffitt@bellsouth.net

Re: Family Connections???

I am a descendant of William Proffitt & Mary Wilkey, They were never married but had a son named William David Wilkey, born 1794. William Proffitt married Elizabeth Elmore while Mary was pregnant with their son. One of my cousins, Dave Wilkey, in California recently did a DNA and that is how we found out about the Proffitt connection. Prior to that none of us Wilkey's had ever heard of the Proffitt's. There is documentation proving the lineage.

My cousin, Dave Wilkey, in California did the DNA and found out we were descendants of William Proffitt. You can contact Dave at dwilkey@san.rr.com and he can tell you about the DNA project.

William Proffitt/ Mary Wilkey

I have news about this line. One of my Wilkey cousins had a DNA done recently for ancestry.com and what a shock all of us got when the results came back. It turns out that Mary Wilkey had an affair with William Proffitt and from that my Great Grandfather, David Wilkey was born in 1784.William never married Mary Wilkey. Until this moment none of us Wilkey's had ever heard of Proffitts in our line. It has added not only an additional generation, as we all thought Mary and David were siblings, but also ads an additional family line to our tree. Apparently William married Elizabeth Elmore shortly before David Wilkey was born. He then had additional children. There are documents proving all of this information. I am hoping to hear from ALL my new found Proffitt relatives. There are several members of my Wilkey line that do lots of genealogy research and they would love to get more information.
