Prosser/Coon in Scriba, Oswego Co. NY

I'd like to put together some information in this thread and see if anyone can confirm or refute the conclusions.

Recently I was told by another researcher that Abram Coon who married Nancy Sprague was the brother of Joseph Coon, b, 1782, who lived in Dryden, Tompkins Co., NY at one point in his life.

This Joseph Coon married Polly Prosser, b. 1781, possible daughter of Ichabod Prosser and Abigail Coon, or alternatively, daughter of Jeremiah Prosser and an unknown woman.

Polly and Joseph went on to have children including Prosser Coon, Joseph Shearer Jr., and Warren. Joseph Shearer Coon m. Julia Ann, the daughter of Nathan Prosser.

Abram Coon went on to have a son who he named Joseph, b. 1812. This Joseph married Ruth Smith and they had children including the twins Myron and Byron.

All of this makes sense to me after analysis of Scriba censuses, which show names that do tend to fit this lineup.

What none of this answers is who the parents of Abram and Joseph might have been. Any theories out there? Any thoughts about how all these people connect to John MacCoone, b. 1666 in Scotland, and later removed to Rhode Island?

Thanks,
Kristin (Coon) Yates

The Rebecca "Hase" cited below is actually Rebecca Hay(es). The Hay family traces back to Easton, NY and perhaps to Westerly, RI before that.

John Coon, b. 1756, appears to have married second one Bethany Satterlee Hay, widow of Conrad Hay. I'm not sure how Bethany and Rebecca might be related, but they probably are.

There was also a member of the Prosser family named Salmon. Now I am moved to wonder if this child was somehow connected to the Salmon River... will have to check it out.

Charles,

I just found your 2001 query requesting information about the family of your father, Charles Wilson Prosser. I believe he was descended from Mark and Louisa Jane Prosser, whose oldest son was Thomas Wilson Prosser, born about 1860 in Lincoln County, Tennessee.

My records show that Thomas Wilson (called Wilse) married Cerina (Rena) Giles. They lived, I think, in Madison County, Alabama, and had a daughter named Sula.

Mark and Louisa Jane were my great-grandparents. Their daughter May Etta, sister of Wilse, was my grandmother. She married John Jay Whitaker, and their son Ross was my father.

I have more information about the Prosser family which I will be glad to share.

Carolyn Whitaker Crowley, Fort Worth, Texas

Grandmother lived in Childress,Texas when she was a young girl. Written on back is the word cousin. Family background is from these parts of Texas and Okla.
I thought this maybe of interest to other family members.

John and Clarissa are not the parents of Nancy Eliza. They were parents to Adaline who died at age 13. She was born 1833, died 1847. Lemuel and his first wife (name unknown) were parents of John and his sister Nancy Eliza.
John (Sr) who married Clarissa Rundell had a brother Nathaniel who married Hannah Rundell. I suspect they were sisters although I have nothing on their parents.

I have a John Cross born 24 June 1802 [Bible Records from Lemuel Cross (1762-1850) Family Bible] died June 24, 1856 aged 54. He's buried in the same cemetery as Lemuel and Sarah (Dickson) Cross. His wife was Clarissa Rundell (1815-1885).

Do you think this John and Clarissa Cross are possible parent candidates of Nancy Eliza Cross?

Hi
Yes. all of these individuals are part of my line. The Lemuel Cross b 1807 is the father of the second listed John Cross and Nancy Eliza Cross. There appears to be an error in John Cross's birthdate listed as 10 Jul 1820. His father was Lemuel born 1807, making him 13! I have his birth date as 30 Jul 1830 which would make more sense and bring his birth date in line with his sister Nancy born 1833

thanks for the info.

I have noticed in my own tree that, because of the 19th C habit of writing the name using the longform 's' so it looks like 'Profser', it is sometimes transcribed as 'Proper' (which is also a genuine surname). So if you can't find your Prosser in the indexes, try looking for a corresponding Proper instead.

As a rule of thumb, when two sources disagree, I tend to trust the one with more detail. In this case the Prosser book wins. It also mentions Daniel Vaughn (Crandall, Jr) was also married to Martha Harrison and Mary L. Berry.

Neither book lists children of Sarah Ann Prosser and Daniel Vaughn Crandall, Jr. Sarah Ann had a sister Mary who married Abner Payne. Their great grandson made a family tree that might be the source of the "John Geldart (Gildard)" confusion. For the seventh child of Solomon, he lists:
"vii. Sarah Ann (Rosanna), m. John Gildard."
Thus, he made two daughters into one.
also:
"ix. Priscilla, possibly m. a Crandell(sic)."
The Lounsbury book repeats this item but corrects the spelling of Crandall.

Do you know if anyone in the Otey Prosser family has participated in the Prosser DNA study? We have a VA Prosser line, but seem not to be connected to the Otey line- or anyone else in fact. But, we share some similar first names and so thought perhaps there might be a tie...
Elizabeth Prosser

I'm researching my husband's family and am trying to track down any information of his maternal grandmother's family. Her name was Alice Amelia Prosser and she was born on August 14, 1886 in Pennsylvania. Two of her siblings were twins. Apparently my husband's family had no contact with their grandmother's family and they were never talked about. My husband's parents are dead as are the few other relatives besides his siblings. Any information or help would be greatly appreciated. Alice was married to Hugh McGee Speedy.

Kay,

In truth, I can't be sure myself (as yet) that Roger is the son of David & Magdelene, as I have yet to verify the apparent entry in the Aberedw records myself. I have some doubt as there is a 20 years difference in the apparent ages (with no other siblings evident as yet), but that could be accounted by a late baptism.
My information in respect of Roger has been taken from the earlier posting on this board by 'Radtaff' which indicates that Roger was baptised in Aberedw, and is the apparent son of David & Magdelene Prosser.
However, I can confirm that Thomas Prosser (alleged brother from whom I descended) was baptised in Gwenddwr on 6 Feb 1805, however, the entry (to my eyes) reads Thomas, son of Dd & Magalon Prosser. The assistant in the Records Office verified that 'Magalon' is an unusual but accepted name.
Geographically, Gwenddwr is a very short distance away from Llandielo (Llandilo) Graban on the opposite side of the Wye valley. Similarly, Aberedw is only a few miles further north of LG, so such things are possible.
Unfortunately, there is a 30+ year gap in the parish registers which might have taken David Prosser's family further back (see my note on the Church Wardens).
On the assumption that we are related I'd be happy to provide further details og my 'twigs'.
I'm hoping that 'Radtaff' will also respond, and perhaps we can sort this out with a greater degree of confidence between us.

Best wishes

David

Kay,

Just a note to say that I visited Powys Record Office this Easter. While I was unable to pursue Roger Prosser for you (time limited and usual frustration of the absence of other records - there are no Baptism or burial records for Llandeilo Graben on microfilm, only marriages at the Record Office).
I can confirm a marriage (by banns) entry for David Prosser (his mark) and Magdalen Wathen (her mark) in (and both of the parish) Aberedw on 8 Dec 1804 performed by Thos Morgan Clk in the presence of David Powell and Jon Morgan (his mark).

I subsequently rechecked the Gwenddwr records for the possible baptism of David (his son Thomas was baptised there in 1805)- working on the principle that a David Prosser had been a church warden there in the 1770s - whilst I found no entry I did find one a banns entry (but no note of apparently being solemnized)for James Prosser (of Gwenddwr) and Mary Beavan (of Crickadarn)on 3, 10, and 17 May 1778. This would be about right for parents of David assuming he was in his early 20s when he got married. I checked Crickadarn records in the hope of him being baptised in his Mary's parish, but without luck (no marriage either).
I did discover that the original parish records for Brecon and Radnor have been / are being transferred to the Powys Record Office from the University in Aberystwyth but are not yet available to the public (and no forecast either). Sorry if this doesn't help much but hope it keeps you in the picture.

Regards

David
