Elwood Proudfoot was my maternal grandfather. He was born 10/08/1905. In 1928 he married Elizabeth Nemeth, who was my grandmother. They had two children: Carolyn and E. David. Carolyn is my mother.

If anyone has any information regarding the parents and/or siblings of Elwood, I would love to hear from you.

Mark Adams
Norman, Oklahoma

Andreas Franz Xaver Hofer was born 4 Dec 1821 in Önsbach, Baden. His parents were Johann Evangelista Hofer and Maria Anna Ernst.
He fled to America following the collapse of the 1848/49 Republican uprising in Germany. On Nov 30 of 1849, the SS Triskina arrived in NYC from Rotterdam. Among the passengers was one Franz Xaver Hofer, age 27, a glazier from Baden.
He married Marie Ruef in NYC in 1853. In 1855 he, his wife, and her family moved to Iowa.
He died in 1904. Near as I can tell, he is buried in Chicago.

I have more info if you want.

Regards,
Steve Stumpp

Thank you, MN Proudfoot. I looked at the book you mention a few years ago, but missed some of the details you give in your email.
I am trying to figure out more about this Charles Simpson, namely how he is related to the Charles L Simpson who married the daughter of Matilda Proudfoot & Eugenes McClain.
By the way, I believe we are fourth cousins once removed. You are the second I know of!.

Not sure just what you're looking for. You need to get your hands on the book on this line by Dorsey Proudfoot.

John Proudfoot (II) moved to America sometime before 1786. He and his wife, Leanor, had seven children. I'm descended from their son, James, who married Anna Elizabeth Reed (Read).

Most of this family settled in and around Philippi, Barbour Co WV. There are still many in the area today. I've heard they have a reunion around every 3 years, though I've never attended.

I'm not sure how to answer the question of the field of the PHD. The official record suggests there was no such degree, and the oral tradition was not specific on the subject. It was suggested that the education was in a classical or liberal arts field, but he appeared to be occupied in business (sales and/or accounting) from the beginning of his professional life.

John, hi, good to meet you! I have been researching too, mainly from George Charles Proudfoot (1855 - 1922) down to me of course. Frank has been extremely helpful to me also and provided great assitance giving me the detail back to Edmund in 1698! I have been building a family tree here - Andrew Douglass 1848 - 1905 if you want to have a look - no where near complete and i am still filling in the Proudfoots. If you are interested in ours at all please let me know and i will send something through. Regards Kerry

Hi Pat:
I am researching the LOVE surname from Barbour County, WV. One of my Love's married a Proudfoot. Unfortunately my computer went down and I lost all that data. Could you please check and see if you have anything in your book.. The marriage could have been between PROUDFOOT and any of the connecting names... LOVE; KELLEY; or CORBIN... I know this is a lot of work and I appreciate anything you can do.. Thanks

There is a Proudfit web site You might check-out. That's my family's line, who came over from Scotland mid 1700's and changed the spelling to preserve the way Proudfoot sounds when pronounced in the Scottish accent. There may be others out there like that. Ann Proudfit Crans
