Arrived in eastern Pennsylvania, migration route through western PA, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Missouri and spread out over most of the rest of the united States.
Donald Chilcote lives in Warsaw, Indiana. Don (my father-in-law) is now 86 years old. He says that it is his understanding that the father of Nathaniel Prough was Luther Prough and Nathaniel's mother's maiden name was also Prough. Don's mother, Beatrice Almeda Prough, daughter of Nathaniel Marion Prough, told Don that Nathaniel's parents were distant cousins. Don's e-mail address is donandpat@kconline.com.

My great grandfather, Otis Clay Prough, had a younger brother named Thomas Jason Prough. Thomas was born 10 Sep 1883. Family story is that Thomas just left his family one day and never came back. Otis and Thomas' parents were Peter A. Prough and Sarah Ellen Diven. My great grandparents lived in Bent County, CO, at one time. One of their children, Jalia, was born there in 1914. Could your Jason Thomas Prough be Thomas Jason Prough?
Does anyone have the maiden name for Hannah Prough? I will go back and see dates of birth etc. She would have been born 1848(9) in Ohio. Any info would be appreciated so I can eliminate this person or know finally what family she married into. I have a card that states "she is at Molly's now but have no idea who she married or names of her children. She was in St Joseph Mo as Hannah Blackburn and her family lived in Gentry County, MO.
Thanks for any info that rules her in or out
Joan

I am looking for the maiden name of Hannah Prough. My Hannah Blackburn was born about 1849 in Ohio and in 1870 she was possibly in St Joseph MO and listed also in Gentry Co, MO with rest of family. Stories say someone was married to a Gough. How does Prough become Gough?

I know of no 100% proof of this relationship. I came to my placing of children in treacing the Prough family and studying Census records and ages of children. Old John (John Albert) was the earliest to arrive in Illinois and some of his children. Much later some of another branch settled there also. Contact me I would like to find out more about this branch. If you have copies of any old family bibles or photos I am interested.

Re: Prough Genealogy

I know of Prough family members from OH (1832) settled in MO (1850) then moved to OK (1908), CO (1920) and NM (1940) then some on to CA (1942). [This is in my wife's family.]
Thanks to Yvonne for posting "FindAGrave" info on George A (1824-1889) and Elizabeth Pasley Prough (1826-1885) buried in Linn County, MO. My children are descended from them via Samuel (b. 1857, California, Moniteau County, MO), one of their nine children.
I believe George A Prough was born (in Hocking County, OH) to John Albert Prough (1794 PA-1885 IL) and his first wife Mary Samantha Bussard. The family of John Albert Prough by wife #2 is well documented (in Ancestery.com, OneWorldTree) as are his ancestors. BUT I need firm data to prove the connection. Do you have any ideas?
Donnelly Johnson (Colorado).

I am very sorry but my Grandfather James was the only one who could have remembered there names and he passed almost 16 years ago. All that I can say for sure is that according to him there were brothers that left Penn. together for that area and that they were not heard from after that.
As to the man killed at the end of the Civil war. The story I was told was that he was an Uncle to Robert Prough that had fought with the union army about a year after his return home at the end of the war he was sitting on his front porch with a child asleep in his arms when a man came walking up the street stopped and asked him if his name was Prough when he replied that it was the stranger pulled out a gun and shot him in the chest. Sadly I can not remember the name of the man who would have been my Great great great Uncle and I was told that the killer was never caught.

I am sorry that I can not be more helpful in these matters but unfortunatly when my father moved to Ca. and my Grandparents and Uncle followed most of the history was left behind I still have an aunt living in Harrisburg and have asked my father to see if she has any more information.

As to the list you sent. That is indeed my family, and I thank you very much for it. If possible please send me any information as to where they lived what they did ect. ect.
And most importantly if you can when they came from Europe and where they came from.
Thank You very much for your time and effert.
David P.
