No, I have not sent off for a birth certificate yet on my grandfather, HOWARD EARL PROVINCE b.12 SEPT 1881, Marion County, West Virginia. I've been short on funds since filing for disability last year. Haven't worked since August '08. But, I should be able to afford it coming up in May. Who do I write to in West Virginia for the Vital Records? State or County? Thanks

Have you tried to get your fathers death certificate? I may have where his mother was born (county and State)

If I calculated her birth date from her death date on headstone (which i figure is more reliable then the spelling of names) she should of been born June 1, 1863 when counting back 20 yrs 10 months 25 days from the online 1883 Calendar.
Your birth year and the year on her headstone are off by two years. I checked the reading of the cemetery against the headstone and they both read 1863, too bad the Lavina/Luvina I found was born in 1839, perhaps her mother i wonder.

What did you find her birth date on? I do not find her on the vital stats board for WVA online, but they do not have all their records on, so they may not of had it posted yet. I also do not find her in the birth record books
I have looked in Birth Records Vol 11 1859 to 1866 Monongalia Co, Birth Records Vol I 1853 to 1858, Marion County births vol 11 1860 to 1870, Marriage Records Marion Co 1842 to 1867
I checked both since they are so close together. It is also possible she was a home birth and they never registered her birth but by 1860 they should have done that, clues clues where are the clue

Luvera was my great-grandmother and, yes, she was LUVERA AMMONS-PROVINCE. b. 04 JUNE 1861 and d. 25 APR 1882. Her son, my grandfather, HOWARD EARL PROVINCE, was 7 months old when she died. He, too, was born in Marion County, West Virginia, USA. I do not know anything about her lineage in the AMMONS family. I am researching that now. IF you have more info to offer me, please do so. Looking to correspond with relatives or someone researching Lucy Cordelia Province, b. abt. 1868 in Columbia, Marion County, Mississippi. She may have been deceased prior to the year of 1920 in the State of Kansas.

She was married in Missouri in the year of 1882 or thereabouts to a William Lane Williams.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

I am a Province from the Western Side of Missouri. My Grandfather was Paul Province. My Grandma passed when my father was very little. Have you heard of the name Paul Province yet? He passed sometime in the late 80's/early 90's.

Thanks Jamie and sorry that I wasn't more specific. I know very little about them prior to coming to Madison, AL in the early to mid- 1800's. I think they were born in TN around the end of 1700's but Thomas parents may have been from PA? There is a strong possibility his mother name is Rachel. There is a Rachel that is the right age living nearby after they moved to Sand Mtn. in Jackson Co., AL but I am looking for proof and earlier ancestry information. Thank you.

My great-great-grandfather was Simeon Province. He is buried in Tavnerville Cementery on Camden Ave. in South Parkersburg, Wood County, WV. My great-grandmother was his daughter. Her name was Lydia Isabelle (Belle) and she married Squire Somerville.

Rank and organization: Ordinary Seaman, U.S. Navy. Born: 1842, New York, N.Y. Accredited to: New York. G.O. No.: 59, 22 June 1865. Citation: On board the U.S.S. Santiago de Cuba during the assault on Fort Fisher on 15 January 1865. As one of a boat crew detailed to one of the generals on shore, Province bravely entered the fort in the assault and accompanied his party in carrying dispatches at the height of the battle. He was 1 of 6 men who entered the fort in the assault from the fleet.

There is a W. W. Province, age 21, born in Tennessee, listed in the 1870 census for Socorro Co. N.M.
I am not related to this family. I was looking through this census for someone else and saw all the soldiers names listed here, so this must have been a fort. I just wanted to share this information with the list.
