Re: Nathan Bradford Pulliam born 1856

Nathan Bradford Pulliam and Jemorin Grisham were also my great grandparents, so we are apparently third cousins. They lived in rural Howard County, Missouri, and are buried in the Pulliam Cemetery there. Brad died in 1918 in the flu pandemic; you can get his death certificate from the Missouri Secretary of State's website. In it, Jemorin claimed she didn't know his mother's name, even though they married ten years before her mother-in-law died, and she could have seen her headstone from the front porch of her house [the cemetery is right across the road]. I assume there must have been some bad blood between them. I have some additional information, and have been working on this line recently.

Old query, hope you are still here.

I have a death certificate for Calvin Pulliam, born July 4, 1862, died March 14, 1913, son of Kenchel and Betsy Pulliam death by firearm, homicide.

From the MO archives website
http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/resources/deathcertificates/r...

I am trying to figure out if he is related to my husband. His great grandfather was Henry Calvin Pulliam, son of Calvin Pulliam, but I am thinking it is not the same Calvin Pulliam.

Sandra F

My aunt, Marie WELLS, b. abt 1906, MO, married Harvey D. PULLUM, b. 1904, MO, son of Frank and Nannie (TIDWELL) PULLUM.
You have provided some great information that I hope others will find helpful too. Names can have a lot of directional clues and hint. I never thought of pairing the name Diana with another name and looking for other siblings with the same pairing of names. I have certainly seen the names James, John, Mary and Sarah reoccur in many families.

The familysearch indoex has one other unsourced name and that is Delancy/Delaney. I can see how Dicy can be short for Delancy based on the cy in both both names.

She did not hand down her name to any of her children either as she named the Mary, Catherine, Harriet, Hester, Hannah, Sophia, and Lucinda.

Thanks for your reply and information.

She was born in NC in 1820 and is listed as marrying James Hughes in 1836 in Rowan, NC.

I have had others tell me that Dicy is a nickname for Elizabeth too. I also found the Pulliam family in 1830 in Franklin, Macon, NC. Macon is next to Cherokee County.

Your post has Delilah marrying in Rowan too. Rowan is to the east of Macon county.

I am guessing/thinking that possibly Rowan was the nearst county seat for registering marriages????? Could Dicy and Delilah be related?

The timelines and locations seem coincidental enough for me to want to investigate further.

To: Dennis,
You have the correct Alene, I was her 3rd child, she died when I was 3 and my little brother was 2 days old. she was 21. I was raised by a wonderful woman and I have a great family.
I have been concerned about my mother's background- what little bit I know is pretty tragic. Her mother was Marguerite.
I am glad to find out that her other two kids were adopted out. I found some people on the Marguerite Fagg side in OK. my direct e-mail is loandls@aol.com Thanks for all the information.
Hello, I am a gg-granddaughter of John A Smith b. abt 1815. His son William Carroll Smith married Mary Helen 'Mollie' Wickware (daughter of Alpheus Wickware and Catherine Pulliam). I too have been to the Smith Family Cemetery. Sad to say but only one grave marker remains. I would very much like to talk to you about the family and the cemetery. Would prefer corresponding via email. Please contact me at cherry@pnx.com Waiting your reply, Cherry Solly

Hi Jan,

I am a Smith that is decended from many of the people buried in the Smith farm Cemetery at Atoy in Cherokee county, TX. This includes Catherine Pulliam Wickware. I have located the cemetery and am currently trying to pull together a list of the individuals buried there. To the best of my knowledge the cemetery is named after my ggg-grandfather John A Smith (born: about 1815 in North Carolina and died 26 Feb 1884 in the Atoy community, TX) and buried in the cemetery. Any info that you have about the cemetery, the people buried there, or the Smith family would be very usefull. I hope to hear from you soon.

Hi Tami, I don't know if I can provide any information but my Fiance's name is Douglas Lee Pulliam and he is 44. I believe his father's name was Maurice Pulliam and he was in the Military (California) but the family is originally from Florida.
Here is the wierd part, you mention the name "Carter" My finace's MOTHER remarried a man after Doug's father Maurice passed away, and married a man named Bruce "Carter" and his sister is Jean Carter. There would be no connection to Pulliam and Carter other then marriage by MY Doug's mother... Don't know if any of this helps. Good luck on your search. Thanks Beth

nickname Dicy/Dicey (was: Re: Pulliam oral history)

Dicy/Dicey was a colonial Virginia nickname for Diana and was not used in New England, mainly because of its pagan connotations. From Virginia it spread with migrations. In the early 1800s as new styles of given names came along, Dicy was appropriated as a nickname for names like Laodicea, Candace, with a similar sound in them to the -cy in Dicy.

Dicy also became a name in its own right in the 1800s, like Betsy (Elizabeth) and Nancy (Anne/Agnes/Hannah) did.

Betsy was a common nickname for Elizabeth. Are you sure your associates were talking about Dicy and not Betsy? She could have been Elizabeth Diana or Diana Elizabeth. As a general rule, however, Dicy is not a standard nickname for Elizabeth. Of course, in the 1800s people were doing pretty much whatever they wanted to with names anyway.

The -cy/-sy pattern of nicknames, with the exception of Betsy, was more common in Virginia around 1800 than in New England. Betsy was common in both Virginia and New England.

Diana and Delilah are not names that go together particularly, even though they are both from the Bible. They are not in the same Bible stories. The rule of thumb is that if 2 names go together in the Bible, they go together in genealogy.

Re: Pulliam

Dear Donna,

I am your Mother's first cousin and I used to play with her when we were 3 to 5 years old in Los Angeles, CA. JD Pulliam (her father, your grandfather) and my Mother Lois Bernice Pulliam were brother and sister. If you are who I think you are, you have a sister Bonnie adopted to my Aunt Thelma and a brother adopted out. Your Aunt's names would be Coleen and Marguerite. I was not aware that you existed. That would mean that Alene had three children. Let me know if this matches what I know to be true. I understood that Alene died in N. Dakota. Sorry I can't recall your Brother's name as my Genealogy program is not yet on this PC, but it is more important that I get this to you now.

Get back to me whatever the case.

Dennis
