Born William Henry Purchase Comer, he was listed in the 1861 census as a grandson living with George and Elizabeth Comer. William Henry dropped the Comer from his name when he came to America in 1879. Following his marriage in Sedalia, he ran a butcher shop in Kansas City. Then worked in the transfer business. About 1890 he returned to Pettis County where they moved to a farm six miles north of Green Ridge. Helman Family Tree suggests that William and wife Susan were both residents of Barnstaple, England prior to their respective moves to USA. Records indicate he was a member of the Methodist Church in 1919. At that time Mark A. McGruder (author of History of Pettis County Missouri) referred to him as a prosperous farmer and stockman of Elk Fork township. He was a well-known breeder of Percheron horses and mammoth jacks. By 1919 the 80 acre farm of the 1890`s had grown to 300 acres of improved land.
