Purkiss family from Michigan to Canada, to England

Help, I am searching for any info on a William Purkiss (born around 1821/1822 in Canada - his father is from England) William is on the Bangor Bay MI census for 1870 with 2nd wife Mary A and 3 children (1 with Mary A.) William's father's name is probably John or William. Prior to 1870 I find him on a Wesleyan Methodist Baptism register with son Robert Edward being baptized in Toronto in 1847 by Rev Ep'n Evans - bdate is 08-30-1845. Robert's mother's name is listed as Margaret Elizabeth - any information would be GREATLY appreciated.

My grandfather Robert William Purkiss hailed from the East End of London. Anyone got any more info on this or able to enlighten me?

I have an Arthur Purkiss in my family tree aswell. He was born in 1890 in Woodham Mortimer, Essex. I haven't got any information on marriages or children yet but I know he came from a large family and had 9 siblings.

Could this be the same Arthur Purkiss? Have you got anymore information so we could try and see if they're a match?

Please check out my web site at www.purkiss.us to see if there is overlap. Then please e-mail me at the address on the home page of my site. I'm excited that there may be relatives in the Colchester area.

Chuck

I haven't come across a Alfred so far but I've only just started researching my family tree so I haven't got very far yet. Do you know if he had any brothers or sisters to see if they are in my family tree?

Gosh. Thanks so much for replying. Does that make me one generation below you? I've sent you an invite to my tree - as you can see, Sarah is the only one I really have any information about. Her daughter, May Brooks, was a remarkable woman. Amongst other things, she was a spiritualist (or Spiritualist - I haven't established if she was actually a member of the church) and was a well known medium. My dad, her grandson, thought this was because she had "gypsy blood" but I've found no trace of it in the very ordinary Brooks family - where it might have been as I've been told Brooks is a Romany name.

Any info you have about the Purkiss family in general would be very welcome. My email is helen@clipsom.org.uk if you want to communicate directly rather than via Ancestry.

Helen

Sarah Purkiss b. 1849 of Theydon Bois married James Brooks of Wyverstone. They subsequently moved to Leytonstone and their daughter May Brooks was my great grandmother. Sarah's mother was Hannah and her father James Purkiss of Theydon Bois.

I suspect some of the current Purkisses of the area may be related to me? Anyone researching?

George Purkiss son of George son Moses ?

Can anyone Help?

I have spent some time researching on-line collecting birth and marriage certs to track back my family line.

My Grandfather was George(1) and he married (May Ethel WERN) his father was George(2) who in 1914 married Alice Bore (daughter of Alice LIGHT and Richard BORE). From their marriage certificate I see George's father was Moses and was dead at the time of the wedding.

I have searched and searched for a Birth Cert for George(2) but without luck, there are to many Moses Purkiss in the Portsmouth (and of course New Forest area!!!) to try to leap a generation to hit lucky and trace forward back to George(2)

From family here say I think George(2) had an older Brother Moses, I have found a Moses who died in the Great War in 1917 but can't link him in.

Unfortunatly my Grandfather died in the 80's and I have no living relative that can fill the gaps, George(1) had I'm told 9 brothers or Sisters but I have no info on them other than some of the names they were known by

If anyone knows of George son of Moses or in fact Moses. Please contact me.

Finally I have found a Moses son of Moses son of Aaron but I can't link this line in. The dates for these 3 sort of match to make the last Moses my GG Granddad but I have no information on his children.

Thanks in advance for any information

Mark Purkiss
I am fairly certain that my Great Grandmother was an Edith Pateman (nee Purkiss) who came from Tadlow and was born around 1854. I now have a copy of her wedding certificate when she married Walter. I'll check the details (including her fathers name) and post them in here for you. Regards

Not much info' on Anne Bryer - but I believe the William Purkiss listed as a builder is in fact the same W. T. Pukiss who owned The Royal theatre (later known as Holborn Empire). A son Harry Purkiss (who was disowned) was a detective in the Met. and his picture was featured in the Daily Mirror of Tuesday Sep. 8th 1959. Back row 2nd from left.

Re: Henry Harrison Purkiss & Mary Turton Warner

Henry Harrison Purkiss was my Grandfather's first cousin. He was born in Sanilac County, MI in June 1871 and died in 1948 in Port Huron, MI. His first wife's name was Jennie B. Johnson; she was born in July 1874 and died in 1917. They were married in 1893.

Henry's father was Alfred Purkiss, born Oct 4 1843 in Colchester, England and died Feb 2, 1913 in Homer, MI. Alfred and my Greatgrandfather Thomas Frederick Purkiss were partners in a brewery in Lexington, MI beginning in 1884. The brewery burned down in 1888.

Alfred, Thomas and two other brothers - Samuel B. Purkiss & Arthur Octavius Purkiss came to Lexington from England in 1852 with their father James Purkiss.

I have no information on Henry's second marriage. If you have the particulars, I would appreciate receiving them.

Chuck

I fell on this site by accident! My father was Edward Freeman Purkiss, born approx 1902. I believe his father was also called Edward, or it could have been Ernest. The family came from Edmonton, North London. I have always been led to believe we all were decended from John Perkis, a charcoal burner in the New Forest, who found William Rufus's body after he had been killed in a hunting accident. It would be interesting to hear about other members of the family.
Jane
