Hi, my name is Carolyn Chastain Barrett. My grandmother was Oma Purser, daughter of Julius Purser. My father was Travis. Oma married Harry Chastain and had four sons and two daughters. All my life she lived in Marshall county in Oklahoma. I can't really give you any info other than her brother Albert married Mary, sister to Harry.

Hi Mickey,I see this was several years ago, but in case you are still around. My GGGrandfather was William Purser born in Pavenham in 1832, his older brother was George Purser also born Pavenham . William married Elizabeth Covington from Odell (up the road) and moved to Turvey, then to St Pancras in London around 1875. Any connection?

pickering north riding yorkshire. it was during the reign of george the 3rd that joseph his son was baptised in the parish of pickering. jacob was a farmer. his children were
sarah purser b 1814 d 1874 in western australia and joseph b 1819 ickering and d. 1866 in western australia. his sister married thomas elliott and they came to aust on the dolphion 21/11/1858. any help would be appreciated. cheers judy

My 2X great grandmother was Ellen Purser, dau. of William and Eliza Purser of Itawamba Co., MS. William Purser died before 1860 and Eliza Purser died between 1860 and 1870 because three of their children are found on the 1870 Tishomingo Co., MS census in the HH of Zephaniah Harvey Woodall, Jr. and his 3rd wife, Rebecca Elizabeth Wyatt. Zephaniah's 2nd wife was Avarilla Priddy. I have been fortunate enough to acquire Ellen's death certificate and have learned that her mother's maiden name was Priddy. Could Avarilla Priddy Woodall and Eliz Priddy Purser have been sisters?

Looking for information on Alexander Purser and his wife Jane who came to Perth County, Canada around 1845 from County Wicklow, Ireland. They had at least one son John Purser (1832-1901) who married Louisa Ann Camden and removed to Lambton County, Canada. There may have been a son Alexander who was a carpenter in Lambton. John Purser and his mother Jane are buried at Lakeview Cemetery in Sarnia, Ontario.

Purser DNA

I am a descendent of William Purser Born bout 1825 in Ga. Died in 1900 in Simpson Co. Ms. We have searched hi and low for our roots and found nothing.We turned to DNA testing.It answered a lot of questions for us . We are not from the Mecklenburg NC. Pursers, nor some of the SC. Pursers. It did not find a line for us at all. The results can be found at

In 1810 a James Purser and a David Purser were listed 2 lines apart on the South Carolina,Kershaw District census.
In 1820-1830 James was in Washington Co. Ga. In 1840 he was in Monroe Co. Al. In the 1841 Ms census he was in Copiah Co Ms.
We loose him there. In 1850, William is in Simpson co. Ms.
The census list William's father as being born in SC. as were the Copiah Co. Pursers.
We need a male descendent of the Copiah Co. line of Henry, Fedrick, or David to have a DNA test. Maybe it would answer more Questions.

Keen (Purser/Perser/Rankin/Gortney/Graves)

I'm looking for relatives of Keen's in Arkansas. My great-grandfather moved to Texas long ago and we have lost contact with his brothers and sisters descendants. I'm currently trying to track down all of the family geneology. My great grandfather was Harry Walter or some knew him only as Walter. His brothers were Theodore and Charles or Charley as my grandfather referred to him. His sisters were Susie and Minnie. Minnie married a Robert Rankin and Charley married a Eva Gortney. I have no info on who Susie or Theodore married. I have the complete names of the kids parent and the mothers last name was Perser. She had at least one sister that married a Graves. My grandfather had wrote a lot of names etc on a piece of paper with you were cousins, sisters, brothers etc. It is hard to decipher. Two names I haven't been abble to find are Charley Graves and Jimmy Rankin. I'm not sure if these are nicknames or not. I'm also not sure if Charley is the graves that married my great-great-grandmothers sister or if its their kid or grandchild. If you know anything on this, please email me at keenancestry@yahoo.com. I have been compiling a list of Pursers in England and Wales from Registrar's data. Charles Court Purser died in Portsea in 1895 aged 66. Eliza Jane Purser married in 1895 but the Registrars data online does not record the husband's name. If you request Certificates from the Record's Office you should be able to get more information regarding this family.

Lauren, the Purser families that I have researched, and that settled in Texas, ( Lee and Cass Counties), originated in Mecklenburg and Anson Counties, NC. My research is in the 1800's.

This is the only Purser family I find in the 1930 census in Port Arthur, Texas:

Lucious D Perser, b. abt 1902, Mississippi, White Head
Mary Perser, b. abt 1903 Wife
James L Perser, b. abt 1929 Son

Could Lucious be your g. grandfather? Was your grandfather born after 1930?

Also, there is a Lucius Purser in the Social Security Death Index who is probably the same as the one above (same birth year, SSAN issued in Texas):

Looking for information on Annie. She was the eldest child of Ann nee Hill and John Thomas Purser. John died in 1878 and Ann went on to have 3 more husbands - Thomas Gibbons, Charles Edmund Indge (my great grandfather) and Thomas Tomlinson. Annie married Alfred Walter Smith in the Paddington area in 1897 and had one child by the time of the 1901 census when the family was living in Lambeth -- Constance M.

Looking for information on Thomas. He was born in Shepperton in 1877 although he is shown as being from Shepherd's Bush on the 1901 census when he was living in Brighton. I believe that he remained in the Brighton area and in 1903 married either Gladys Bird or Rose Garlick. On the 1901 census his occupation was given as bootmaker.

She is the daughter of James Monroe Purser, born 6/10/1843 in Henry County, GA, died 1/29/1914 in OK, and his first wife, Nancy Susan Hodge, born 4/30/1844 in Marshall County, AL, and died before 1886 in Tanglewood, Lee County, TX They were married on 11/24/1867 in Marshall County, AL. James is the son of Richard Purser, born 1802 in Mecklenberg County, NC , and died 1864 in Marion County, AL, where Richard's brother, Moses lived. James is the son of the 2nd wife of Richard, Mary Scott Bently Lee, widow of William Lee. She was born 1809 in Henry County, GA, and died 1891 in Lee County, TX. She and Richard were married 2/2/1837 in Henry County, GA. Richard is the son of John Purser, born 1750 in Mecklenberg County, NC, and died there in 1826. John served with the Cold Creek unit of the Mecklenberg County Militia under Capt. Charles Polk during the Revolution. Richard is the brother of my great great great-grandfather, David Purser, 1797-1832.

Richard is the son of John Pusser and Edith "Edy" Helms. John is the son of David Purser and Anna Mullis. David is the son of John Purser and Susannah Cuthbertson. John Pusser is the brother of my Great great-grandfather, Hugh Pusser. Pink's brother, James Hugh Pusser was named for Hugh, James Hugh is the grandfather of Buford Pusser Martha Ann Davis is distantly related to me, as her family is also from North Carolina, as is John Pusser.

I am looking for info on this line of my family. My GF was Charlie Thomas Purser, he was born 10/2/1903 in Iron City TN area. He married Katherine ( Katie ) Collier and had one child Katie Sue Purser ( this is my mother ) she remembers playing with Bufford Pusser/Purser the infamous TN Sherrif that the movie "walking Tall" was modeled after. I know Charlie had 2 siblings - Floyd Purser and Ester Purser Lawson. Any info on this line would be greatly appreciated. My GM family was all from the Town Creek area of Northern Alabama.

My mother is Katie Sue Purser daughter of Charlie Thomas Purser from Iron City TN. My mother has told me that she is a cousin of Bufford Pusser the infamous TN sherrif of the movie "Walking Tall" she remembers playing with him as a child at her families home. I just started a search on this family line and am seeking info. I know my GFather was legally named Charlie Thomas Purser he was born 10/2/1903 and died July 1982 in TN - Iron city /Lawrence area. He was married to Katherin Collier and they had one child My mother Katie Sue Purser DeBord.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.
My mothers mothers family are all from Northern ALA. Town Creek area.

Hello. I do not have much information on my line of the Pusser/ Purser family. This is what I do have. My Maternal Grandfather was Charlie Thomas Purser. He was married to Katherine Collier Purser and had one child Katie Sue Purser.
Charlie was born on 10/2/1903 and died in July of 1982 in Iron City TN. I know Charlie had a brother Floyd and a sister Ester Purser Lawson. I know from my mother she is somehow related to Bufford Pusser/ Purser the infamous TN Sheriff the movie " Walking Tall" was made after. My mother remembers playing with Bufford when she was a small child at her grandparents home. I am trying to find out more info on this line of Pussers/Pursers. I jsut started a genealogy study.
If anyone has any info on this line from TN- in the Iron City or Lawrenceburg area.

But here's what I know: Robert Percer and his wife, Sarah and son David are listed in the 1850 census for Itawamba County, MS. I am from the line of his son William, b. 1815. d. abt 1858-59. They had nine children. Their daughter, Ellen, is my gggrandmother. I would appreciate it if you would share any information you have acquired on this family with me.

Alfred Perser and Susan Keen from NC and IN to TX

I am looking for a Alfred Perser that was born in about 1820 give or take a year in Indiana he later married a Susan Keen that was born in Indianan in about 1825 give or take a year. Their first know child was born in Texas in 1851, their known children names are Elijah, Nancy, Harriett, William and Mary perser. If you type in Alfred perser in the family tree search on this site it will pull up my family tree and more information on these individuals. I'm trying to find siblings or parents of Susan Keen and Alfred Perser. --- Also, one of their kids Harriett married a Charles S. Keen. He was born in Pennsylvania in Nov 1852, he married Harriett in Texas in 1877. There are three Charles Keen's on the 1860 PA census, but after that only one Charles Keen appears for all subsequent years. I have no idea who is parents or siblings were, no word of mouth has been passed down on him. I have heard a story that his last name was originally Schmidt but he changed it to Keen when he moved to Texas. I couldn't find a Charles Schmidt on the 1860 census that fit the criteria, so I don't know if it's true. This story has been handed down through only one of his kids descendants line (Harry Walter). I have found all his other kids descendants and no one else has heard the story, it is most likely false. Since I have no records of who his siblings or parents were then I have no way of going back and verifying the information. An help on any of this would be greatly appreciated. In addition to this, the story states one of the Schmidt's then moved from Pennsylvania to Chicago, Illinoise, keeping the Schmidt name and opening a store of some sort. This would have taken place somewhere during 1868-1876 if it is true.

Mickey I think we may well be related ,my maiden name was Purser,my fathers family all came from Pavenham.I visited Pavenham in 02 and was able to get a lot of info.from an ex. teacher who had researched the Purser family ,as Pavenham is on the Ouse river the men were rush cutters and mat makers the women were lace makers .I have census, births ,deaths marriages even Baptism records. Too much stuff to write here but i would like to share the info it may be that we are related, you can email me and give details could send copiesof it all to you,i haven't done my line yet but it is interesting reading

Would some of you good folks kindly help me out. I am Searching for a great great grand that came to the State
of Mississippi,Simpson County as a matter of fact, from the
State of Georgia. He served in the Civil War and was blinded.
Name, Wm Purser, dob 1825-1830.Married and raised two
families in Simpson Co and died 1900 and burried there. His first

Hello Thirzah,

Just a quick note, if your John Purser age 34 in 1901 born in Petworth has a few generations going back in that area he may be connected to a Purser that came to Canada in the 1830's /40's. There was an immigration scheme called The Petworth Immigration Scheme whereby people from that area gained passage to the eastern US and Canada ( Specifically southern Ontario Lake Erie shoreline areas from Fort Erie thru to Pelee Island. But at the time it was known as Upper Canada, many of the immigrants showed up in the upper Ohio valley areas . Then most migrated west in due course as was the thing to do back then, Please email off the message board and I will try to find the info about an old contact I had regarding a Purser line from Petworth that migrated.

I had corresponded with her some time ago. She descends from the irish link of Purser's there were two brothers born in Ireland and it is believed that there father was George Purser(1780-1847) fromPavenham. I have been researching this line of mine for many years and we believe we have finally made the connection between the Purser's of Pavenham and the ones in Ireland who appear to have come to Pavenham in 1825.
