I show Sarah Carlton Puryear to be a daughter of W. C. and Hannah Puryear. Per the 1860 census for Macon County, Alabama, I show Hannah as being born in New York.

Looking for friend for parents/family of Sara Carlton PURYEAR b. Jul 1856 AL. She lists in 4 census her father being b. in GA; in 1880 New Hanover Co.NC & 1910 Ware Co. GA Census she lists mother being b. in NJ, in 1900 Ware Co.GA census she listes mother being b. in PA and in 1920 in Ware Co. GA she lists mother being b. in NC. Quite confusing.
She md George A. CROOM in 1874 in New Hanover Co. NC. and they were there in 1880. By 1900 thru 1920 they were in
Ware Co. GA census.
They had 4 children: Carlton b. 1876 NC (md SMITH), William P. b.1878 NC, Mattie N. b.1885 GA (md PITTMAN) & George A. Jr. b. 1891 GA (md SMITH).

Roberta Louise Puryear heard her Master's voice and at 7:50 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2008, she went from labor to reward, following a short illness.

She was born April 17, 1937, in Zanesville, Ohio a daughter of the late Dewey and Susan (Gibson) Starks. Roberta retired from the Lear Corporation after 35 years of service and was a member of the Union Baptist Church, a past member of the 20th Century Club and Sisters of Ruth. Roberta was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister and wife to her late husband Carl.

Those who remain to remember and celebrate her life are her five children, son Jamie of New Albany, Ohio; daughters Beverly and Creola of Zanesville, Linda and Cynthia of Georgia; 22 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one brother, David "Pete" (Carol) Starks of Zanesville; one sister, June Taylor of Dayton, Ohio; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Carl; daughter, Jackie; son, Robert; five brothers, Harry, Robert, Melvin, George and William; and three sisters, Betty Starks, Della Dungey and Mildred Stinger.

Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 1, 2008 at Burrell Funeral Services, 414 LaSalle St.Zanesville, Ohio

Funeral services are 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2008, at Union Baptist Church, 56 Eighth St., with the Rev. Clifton Kilpatrick officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Yes, Mecklenburg County, specifically in the Clarksville and South Boston area are where my family live. My mother is a puryear and our family stretch for the bottom of Va through NC. I have cousins who live in Oxford. My great grandmother is Mary Wilkerson Puryear

tanya, Skipwith, Virginia is a small town heading towards Clarksville, Virginia. This is the area the Burtons, Claibornes and Puryears were a significant part of the community. It is not hard to find. dale

Tanya, Yes, my grandmother Minnie Bell Puryear Robertson was from mecklenburg county. I am related to the Nelson Puryears on my great grandfather's side James Berry Puryear and his wife was also a Puryear - Mary Goode Puryear. James Berry's father was Isaiah B. Puryear - the half brother to Ruth Averett Puryear. They both have the same mother Dolly Carter Puryear Averett. My mother (Minnie's daughter) and I have been working on the Puryears
for quite some time. So I try to keep up with the Mecklenburg area Puryears. Are your Rashs from the Skipwith area? Dale Davis

My records show you William Puryear to be a son of Robert Harmon (born about 1760) and Mary Ellen Stovall Puryear.

Robert Harmon is a son of William (born about 1720) and Unknown Puryear.

William is a son of Samuel (born about 1694) and Elizabeth Puryear. This family is the oldest Puryear family in America to whom descendents can be traced.

He was born in 1782, in Mecklenburg County, VA. He died in Graves County, KY. He married Polly (Mary) Lignon.

Their son, John Washington was born in 1803, in Granville County, NC. He died in 1880. in Halifax County, VA. HE married Elizabeth Thompson.

Their son, John Anderson Puryear was born on 12/13/1846, in Person County, NC. He died on 1/19/1916, in Mecklenburg County, VA. He married Parthenia Frances Humphries.

Their son, Ollie Gray was born on 6/1/1888, and died in 12/71, in Mecklenburg County, VA. He married Myrtle Newton.

Their son, Gauis Gray was born on 1/19/23, and died in 1972, in Portsmouth, VA. He married Jemima Pearl Walters.

Their daughter, Joyce Marie, was born on 1/4/51 and married Calton William Rash.

They produced me--Tanya Noel on 1/7/77, in Portsmouth, VA.

Ridenour, 609 Roseneath Road, yesterday morning, will leave Christian's Funeral Home her toay at 1 o'clock for South Hill, Va., where burial services will be held at 4 o'clock. Mrs. puryear, who formerly resided at South Hill, is survived by four daughters, Mrs. H. C. Ridenour, Mrs. F. M. Dickerson, Miss Virginia Puryear, all of Richmond, and Mrs. W. L. Elam of Oxford, N. He did not have much info on the Bryant's here in KY like I thought he might. Although, he told me that David Bryant and his brother(name unknown) left KY for MO to either purchase land or build on land already purchased. Elizabeth stayed in KY and her husband David died either on the way to MO or on the way back?
They had two son's, Jesse Puryear Bryant and Anthony Bryant. Jesse P. founded a couple of Churches in this area one being Mt. Moriah Baptist near Magnolia in Hart Co. KY. He moved on to Texas and he did not say where Anthony ended up.
Also, he has some letter's obtained from a Edna Bloyd Nichols between the two brother's Jesse P. and Anthony Bryant and possibly other's. There might possibly be some info of interest in these letter's? I could have him pull these letter's for us and we could check them out. He also told me that this Edna Bloyd Nichols has a book in the Larue Co. Library that might have info on the Bryants.

I know someone who has a lot of info. on these Bryant's and I will contact him and let you know. Elizabeth and David had a son Jesse Puryear Bryant and he started a couple of churches in the area and I think he moved on to Texas. I'll let you know when I talk to my cousin.

I am sorry, but I have no information on the line of Puryear's you are interested in. My line descend's from Revolutionay War Soldier Jesse Puryear that came to Green County KY from VA circa 1780. His father was Thomas from Samuel.
Jesse Puryear had ten children here in Green County KY and one of them was named Hezekiah.
As for Clark Co. KY I would have to look at a map to locate it, I live in Hart Co. South Central KY.

I am looking for the Hezekiah Puryear family that originated in Goochland VA. He married Mary Ellis and when she died, he married her sister, Ann Ellis. Hezekiah and Mary had a son, Hezekiah, Jr. who was a witness to the wedding of my gggggreatgrandmother, Martha Carter (daughter of Susannah Ellis and Robert Carter) to William Wood in Goochland in 1793. Many of the Ellis and Carter siblings migrated to KY. Some migrated on to MO. Susannah Ellis Carter died in Clark Co KY ca 1823. Do you have any information on this family?? Thanks!

Sank's family was there too. they moved around- Granville Co, NC; Mecklenberg Co, VA , Nottoway Co, VA, Chesterfield Co, VA. However Granville & Mecklenberg border each other. i'll look into James Berry Puryear.

Their children were John Crowder Puryear, Powell Puryear, Wm Henry Puryear, Elizabeth Puryear, Benjamin R. Puryear, Edmond T. Puryear, and Samuel Smith Puryear. Sank is Richard Clausel Puryear's 2nd cousin 3 times removed. -meaning Richard Clausel Puryear was 2nd cousins with Sank's Great Grandfather William Puryear. my info on Sank back to Samuel Puryear is per John Leslie Puryear III's "Descendants of Samuel Puryear" on www.familytreemaker.com. I came across this while cross checking DUNN line. Your James is James M. DUNN s/o James DUNN (c1817TN)& wife Lucia Anna ___ (c1818TN). James 1817 is possibly (& I hope) the older brother of my GGG Grandfather Allen DUNN (b.1820TN)s/o William DUNN & Rebecca HEADRICK of TN (who had 12 ch).
I found James M. md to Mary A. PURYEAR in 1880 in Jefferson Co. IA w/ son Thomas (1875) & Minnie (1879).
I put info on forum and had reply that stated James M. died 1932 & Mary 1924 and listed ch as Thomas, Minnie M.,Rebecca, Ethel, Jennie & Anna. Also found Mary A. in 1870 census with father Thomas (1814 VA) & wife (Annie) Jane b. c1822 KY.
Have you found any more info about this family since you posted this ?

Grace Hollis Puryear, in her book on the Puryears, shows Giles R. Puryear to be a son of Peter Puryear and that he had no siblings.

Some think that Giles was a son of John Puryear, Jr. and Johanna Norment. If this is the case, he had a brother Richardson (born about 1800 in Virginia and died before 12/21/1861 in Hopkins County, Kentucky) and a brother William Norment (born about 1788 in Mecklenburg County, Virginia and died 1861 in Hopkins County, Kentucky).

The record that I have for Richardson says that he was killed in the Civil War. He married Lucy A. Smith on 12/18/1833 in Mecklenburg County. I show that they had one male child but I do not have a name or date of birth. Richardson and Lucy are in the 1860 census for Hopkins County. Living with them is Charlotte Barron, a grandaughter of Richardson's brother Achilles. Also living with them is Abner Smith, a nephew of Lucy.

William married Sallie Keeton on 11/8/1815 in Mecklenburg County. Their children were John William, James Henry, Jane, Susan, and Julia. William is living with his son James in the 1860 census for Hopkins County.

I show Alexander and Sally Puryear had one child named Isaiah B. Puryear. Some researchers say that Isaiah is the son of Littleberry Stone Puryear, who seems to be a brother to Alexander.

Isaiah B. Puryear married Sarah Ann Frances Shotwell.

I show the children of Thomas and Mary Elliott Shotwell to be: Sarah Ann Frances (about 1843 to before 1868), Thornton (born about 1846), and James (born about 1848).

I have no record of Alexander and Mary Elliott Puryear having any children.

Robert Lee Puryear, 51, formerly of Columbus, Ohio passed from time to eternity at 1:18 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008 at the home of his mother and sister after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born Feb. 25, 1957, in Newark, Ohio to Carl and Roberta Starks Puryear. His youth was spent in Zanesville, Ohio. Robert worked at Hanson Pipe and Precast in Columbus.

Surviving to cherish his memory are wife Veronica Puryear of Charlotte, N.C.; daughters, Micrita Tyler of Canton, Ohio; and Katherine Puryear of North Carolina; grandchildren, Michaelyn and Erynn Tyler; stepchildren, Tylynn, Fonshae and Anthony of Charlotte N.C.; his mother, Roberta Puryear of Zanesville, Ohio; brother Jamee Puryear, New Albany, Ohio; sisters, Beverly Puryear, Creola Puryear both of Zanesville, Linda Puryear and Cynthia Puryear of Georgia; a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends .

In addition to his father, Robert was preceded in death by sister, Jackie Puryear; grandparents, Dewey and Susan Gibson Starks and Ernest and Annie Ruth Puryear Singleton.

He will be deeply missed by all. We loved him, but God loved him best.

I am looking for information on Eliza Prear (Puryear or Pruyear), b. about 1817, who married James Washington "Wash" Marr, possibly in Taylor Co. or Green Co. in the 1830s. Their children included John William Marr (1843-1919), Mary, and Sarah. After her husband died, Eliza moved to Hart Co. with her brother-in-law, George Barnes Marr, and her mother-in-law, Judith Marr.

Does anyone have any additional info on Eliza, her parents, siblings or other relatives? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

R. A. PURYEAR b. 4/12/1850 d. 9/30/1909
and wife, NANNIE PURYEAR b. 11/7/1847 d. 10/26/1922 are buried in:
Shady Grove Cemetery,located on East Hyco Road, Halifax Co., VA.

Also buried in that cemetery is:

JOHN HENRY PURYEAR, b. 12/15/1876 d. 3/5/1971, and wife,
ADA GRAVITT PURYEAR b. 3/22/1884 d. 11/9/1968.

Also buried in that cemetery is:

HAROLD ALLEN PURYEAR b. 7/30/1924 d. 7/14/2007,
wife's name and birthdate are on stone...no death date...
OLA WHITT PURYEAR, b. 1/29/1928 - they married 7/12/1848.
Large ornate granite stone with engravings on both sides of stone.
