• Dufferin Spring Assizes opened on Monday with Mr. Justice Sutherland presiding. There was no civil business but one criminal case. The prisoner, James Duffin, was charged with attempting rape on Laura Puterbaugh in Mulmur Township, on Sept. 5 last. G. M. Vance, of Shelburne, was Crown counsel, and I. B. Lucas acted for the accused. The Grand Jury returned a true bill. The evidence of eight witnesses was taken. The prisoner, who is a married man aged 64, was found guilty and sentenced to one year in the Central Prison. The Grand Jury, in their presentment, reported the county buildings in a satisfactory condition and suggested stricter enforcement of the law against carrying weapons.
