This is my comment on the 1880 Arkansas Census:

JOSEPH PUTMAN Lower LaFave, Yell County
Joseph Henry Putman is 11 AR AR AR and listed as a son of John and Sarah (Braton) Lackey of Lower Lefarve Township. I have no idea to whom he is related, but I think it is to William J. Putman, son of Daniel Thomas Putman. A relative states that Joseph was illegitimate and while his father was a Putman, his mother was a Brown. Now to further confuse you. I have spoken with a Peggy Lackey in Arkansas, and she says her husband is a stepson of Emma Putman (a daughter of Daniel Thomas Putman) who married John Gallagher in Washington County in 1877. Must be a connection here. See 1900 for his family.

Here is what I have on my Arkansas Page for the Yell County families:

Then in 1880 we find Joseph and William Putman. Joseph is 11 AR AR AR and living as an adopted child of John and Sarah (Braton) Lackey of Lower Lefarve township. William is 10 AR TN AR and living with his aunt and uncle, William and Rebecca 'Susie' Ray in Waveland. William is most probably a son of William J. Putman and Malinda Harrison and born right here. I listed him and his family earlier under William James Putman (Sr.), a son of William Putman and Alla Bridges of Washington County, Arkansas. They might or might not be brothers and connected to William James Putman of Washington County. I do not know the exact connection, but they are only young teenagers, obviously orphaned and living with relatives. In 1900 they are both still in the county and married.

I have run across a descendant of Joseph H. Putman, but while she can bring me forward, cannot help in the other direction. Based on census reports and the info from her, I can kinda piece out the line of Joseph Putman. Here is also a photo of Joseph, Missouri and some kids. Based on the ages in the census reports, this photo was taken in 1909 or 1910.

Go to my website www.BillPutman.com There is a photo of them and more info on the kids.

It's http://www.billputman.com/ARother.pdf

Anything you can add will be appreciated.
Bill Putman who responded above has this at his website:

I assume this is the Joseph Henry Putman for who you are looking:

JOSEPH H. PUTMAN Rover, Yell County

He is still around and now married. He is now 30, Missouri Edens, his wife is 29 AR, Frank Montgomery 8 (born August 22, 1891) and John Vilette born November 9, 1899. He married Missouri Edens September 14, 1890.

BILL does a great job of record keeping.

Mark

I'm actually hunting down my husbands people. I have current to his great grandparents, Joseph Henry Putman m Missouri Eden, she was the daughter of Austin Eden and Martha Jane Hunt. The had several children. I've seen Joseph with a couple named Lackey, but I don't know the connection. I think they were from the Scott County Arkansas area. I've been looking at this on & off for a couple of years but I run in to lots of dead ends it seems. Thanks for replying.

I made a mistake:

The following is correct:

About 1760, VICTOR Putman it appears moved from the Upper Mount Bethel, PA, area to near Hackettstown, Warren Co., NJ, which is across the Musconectcong River from Schooley's Mountain, Morris Co., NJ. It was near Hackettstown, it seems, that VICTOR Putman became indebted to Mathias Barber, who died about 1764 in "Old" Hardwick, NJ, which included Hackettstown, NJ.

Putman, Kinnan, Martin

I've been working on my Putman -- Kinnan line with possibly some good results.

Victor Pottman, or Putman, the father of Peter Pottman, or Putman, married Margaret Wies. [I wonder it she might not have been a Kwik and sister to Thomas Quick].

About 1760, David Putman it appears moved from the Upper Mount Bethel, PA, area to near Hackettstown, Warren Co., NJ, which is across the Musconectcong River from Schooley's Mountain, Morris Co., NJ. It was near Hackettstown, it seems, that David Putman became indebted to Mathias Barber, who died about 1764 in "Old" Hardwick, NJ, which included Hackettstown, NJ.

Also, Mathias Barber and James Martin were surities for a liquor license about this time [1764].

Across the river from Hackettstown at Schooley's Mountain lived John Kinnan who later had a son named Jonathan Kinnan who married Anne Salmon. The Kinnan's married into the Caskey family.

Just south of Hackettstown lived James Martin near Beattystown, NJ. It appears his descendants also married into the Caskey family. James Martin's son Stewart Martin owned a tavern at Beattystown during the Revolutionary War.

It seems that in this time frame, 1764, that the Putman's, Kinnan's, and possibly even Martin's met. John Kinnan seems to have removed to Wantage, NJ, where Victor Putman's son Peter married a daughter of John Kinnan [and Mary Sutton] named Sarah Kinnan.

So, Sarah Kinnan Putman's linage would be John Kinnan and Mary Sutton of Schooley's Mountain, Morris Co., NJ, and then Thomas Kinnan and Mary Bedell of Long Hill, Morris Co., NJ.

Peter and Sarah Kinnan Putman's son John Putman married Sarah Martin, reportedly. I am trying to determine if Sarah Marin might be related to James Martin of Beattystown, NJ.

James Martin may have married Anne Drummund. John Kinnan's brother Joseph Kinnan it seems married a Ruth Drummond.

I find it interesting that a James Martin and Christopher Vought were witnesses in the Will of Peter Clover about 1755 in Lebanon, NJ. Christopher Vought was a brother-in-law of Victor Putman. Christopher married Cornelia Putman, Portman, the daugher of David Pottman, Potman, or Putman.

Mark R.
Trying to find the death date of Harry Putman. He married in Marion Co. IN in 1886 to a female Boatman. He was deceased by 1890. I would like to know the parents of Harry Putman. I don't believe his proper name was Harry but this is the name on the marriage records. He had one daughter Rose M. Putman who was placed in the home of a Mrs. Hodges as an indentured servent from the Guardians Home in Marion Co. IN. She was taken to Colorado by Mrs. Hodges. This is where she married H.O Ferrill Any help would be appreciated as I am visually impaired. My e-mail address has changed to tcrail@insightbb.com. Thanks T Crail

Re: Putman Edward, Ellen ( Partlow), Ralph and Glenn

Me again Kristal,

I found his WWI draft registration, and a KEMPER family tree that has a lot of info. They were in ND in the 1915 and 1925 censuses. I didn't have them there. I put pretty much what I found out in the 1930 MN and here is 'revised' entry:

EDWARD PUTMAN Winchester, Norman County
He is 40 SD GER GER. His wife Ellen Rachel Partlow is 36 MN and they have Ralph 17 ND, Glen 8 SD. They were married In James, North Dakota December 2, 1911. A relative says that on August 6, Ed shot his wife and then shot himself. She can’t find any record in Minnesota or the Dakotas. I can’t find Edward earlier so don’t know his folks except his mother’s name was Bachila. I found his WWI Draft Registration card. It states he was born in Watertown, Codington County, South Dakota on November 15, 1888. At the time he was 28 so the card was filed in 1917 and he then lived in Kensal, North Dakota. He had a farm in Kensal, Stutsman County with a wife and one son. They were in the North Dakota 1915 and 1925 Censuses. I can’t find them in 1920 yet. The son Ralph was born July 6, 1912 and will die in Moline, Illinois June 2, 1988. Glenn Howard was born in South Dakota August 13, 1922 and will die in Shreveport, Louisiana August 11, 1972.

I don't know if you put that up, but ties in with your info. If not there is a bunch of good dates etc. But ... no clue to Daddy, mom was Bachila.

Bill

Hi, don't know anything about them, but here they all are in Minnesota in 1930:

EDWARD PUTMAN Winchester, Norman County
He is 40 SD GER GER. His wife Ellen is 36 MN and they have Ralph 17 ND, Glen 8 SD.

With his folks being German, he could belong to one of the Puttmann families out of Ohio and Iowa, or his name could have be Anglesized (sp).

If you can add anything, let me know and I can update this census entry. I'll do some searching and let you know if I find anything.

Hi Mark,

Agree about Albert being David and Dorothy's. My question is who were David's folks?

I have a couple of choices:

David Putman and Dorthy Hainer > Henry Putman and Hannah Anguish > Johannes Putman and Gertrude Six > Arent Janse Putman and Elizabeth Akerman > Johannes ‘Jan’ Poutman and Cornelia Brandt.

Or he may be a son of George Putman and Mary Ferguson from New York. Just not sure. They had a son David the right age. This is a New York Dutch family, but that’s about the best I can do on that line.

Since David was born in New York, would guess George as Henry came up much earlier and before the Revolution here as he was a Loyalist.

Other problem is I don't know who George Belongs to.

Hi, the first I find them in in Michigan in 1860:

DAVID PUTNAM Attica Township, Lapeer County

He is 21 (27) CAN, Eliza J. Garvey 31 NY and Marilla 2 MI. He lives very near John and Marilla Putnam who would be his folks, especially with his only daughter named for his (step) mother.

JOHN PUTNAM Attica Township, Lapeer County

He is 48 CAN, Marilla Cohns 36 CAN, Martha J. 14 CAN, Rhoda 12 CAN, Sarah E. 9 CAN, William 6 CAN, Maria 5 MI. Also there are Jonathan Putnam 23 CAN and his wife Sarah J. Brower 19 NY. I assume Jonathan is by a prior 'mother' as Marilla is just too young. A descendant says that John was indeed married to an Eliza first. Jonathan and David above were born in the first marriage.

JONATHAN PUTNAM Attica Township, Lapeer County

He is 23 CAN, Sarah Jane Brower, his wife, 19 NY. They live with his parents John and Marilla.

Then in 1870:

DAVID PUTNAM Attica, Lapeer County

John’s son was here in 1860, his folks and brother have moved over to Oregon Township though. David is 37 CAN (Ontario). Eliza Jane McGarvey/McCarven his wife is 40 NY, and Marilla 12 MI, Mary Ann 9 MI, and Orrin A. 4/12 MI (born January).

JOHN PUTNAM Oregon, Lapeer County

He is now 58 CAN (Ontario) Marilla Cohns, his second wife, 52 CAN, William 17 CAN, Afaretta 5 MI.

JONATHAN PUTNAM Oregon, Lapeer County

He is now 33 CAN, Sarah Jane Brower 28 NY, George 9 MI, William Byron 6 CAN. He is another son of John and Marilla and has been here a while. Must have made a short return trip to Canada though, from the birthplace of young Bill.

I can't find him in Canada in the 1851 so no ideas as to folks. I guess New Englanders, but no proof yet.

If you ever find ot, let me know.

Bill
Hi, and thanks Dan,

Yes go to that file on my website. I don't have a lot:

Ella Putman born in 1855. When she was married November 28, 1877, she listed her name as Ella McGovern, and her parents as Lucy Putman. She seems to have been married previously to a McGovern. In 1877, she married Jonathan William Loveless in Warren County.

Also kinda vague on why she used the name McGovern. If you can add anything, dates kids etc, I'll add and update.

BillPutman@aol.com
www.BillPutman.com

Was Olive Jane Putnam (B abt 1840), wife of Charles Silas Lavanway, a daughter of Alvah and Marie Putman who had also lived at Richmond before moving to Mooers, N.Y. prior to 1850?

I am researching Ella Putman and her mother Lucinda Putman. Ella is my husband's great great grandmother. Ella was born about 1855 in Warren County, Va and she married Jonathon William Loveless in 1877 in Warren County, Va. Her mother was Lucinda Putman who was born about 1834 in Virginia. Lucinda's parents were Pencythia (Gill) and William Putman. I would like to learn more about Ella and her mother Lucinda. Thank you.
Becky Cook

That you have info on the Putman's. So John Putman & Merilla Cohns did have children in Dunn, Ontario. My line is through their son William Putman. He was born 1853 in Dunn, Haldmond, Ontario. He married Anna Minerva Caryl 10 Aug 1875 when he was 22 years old. He died in 1894 at the age of 40. Death is listed as Huron,Michigan.

I am most interested in John Putmans & Marilla Cohns parents. I have searched through Bill Putmans site I have not seen anything which would add up to the correct ancestors."

Ron do you have anything that might help me?

Thanks

I know on one side of my ancestors that when they came to
Michigan and were asked for their last name the family name was left off official documents.

I believe turning over all stones and turning ever leaf to check who was there.

Thanks,
VJ

Hi Bill,

I have been working with someone who might be descended from David Putman and Dorothy Hainer. She finds that her ancestor John Putman who married Marilla Frank Cohn, who I think is Marilla Frank Cook, was a son of a David Putman of New York born about 1783.

She feels that David Putman was David Victorse Putman the son of Victor Davidse Putman and Maria Schell. This David V. Putman was born in 1783. That is a real possibility.

Another, possibility is David Putnam who appears to have been a son of John and Sina Putman of New Jersey and a brother to John Putman and Janet Stoll of Steuben Co., NY. This David [J.] Putman married Temperance Little, I believe, as per a New Jersey Will, but he may have remarried.

David Putman of Ontario, Canada, owned a ship that he plied on Lake Erie. He left his Ontario family, wife and kids, and returned to the United States are per the history of the family.

So, there are two possibilities for the origin of David Putman of Ontario, Canada . . . one New York and the other New Jersey.

George Davidse Putman had a son David born in 1785 who married a Mary in Cazenovia, New York. This is the David Georgese Putman to whom you refer. Since David G. Putman had children born in New York at the same time that David Putman and Dorothy Hainer had children born in Ontario, David G. Putman does not seem to be the David Putman of Ontario.

Mark R. Putnam

I have been doing some research on the Marilla F. Cohn and John Putman family or Ontario and Michigan. In Michigan, they lived in Lapeer and Tuscola Counties. Marilla Cohn was born in 1818 in Ontario according to the 1870 and 1880 Michigan Census. Some other records give a different date. John Putman was born in 1812 in Ontario.

Well, this is controversial, but David Putman and Dorothy Hainer of Ontario, David Putman was born in the U. S. about 1783?, had a son named John Putman who married Marilla Cook. Marilla Cook seems to have been Marilla Frank Cook the daughter of Jonathan Cook and Catherine Kilts of Ontario. Marill Frank Cook was also born in 1818 in Ontario.

Marilla F. Cohn's middle name was also Frank, so I wonder if Marilla Frank Cohn and Marilla Frank Cook were not the same person. In German, Cook is Kochen, which is similar to Kohn or Cohn but without a "c' and an "e".

The best way to determine the ancestry of this family is to do a Y-DNA Test. If there is a male Putman, whose last name is Putman, in this family, he should have his Y-DNA tested. This is the best way to determine the ancestry.

It is generally understood that the family is Dutch from New Jersey or New York . . . the Pootman family, but a Y-DNA test will only tell for sure.

Mark R.
I just wanted to add something additional about Dorothy Hainer and David Putman of Ontario, Canada, so everyone might be up to date.

Dorothy and David Putman were married about 1807, and in 1812 they had a son named Albert Putman.

Dorothy Hainer's parents variously have been reported as Derrick, or Richard, Hainer and also Albert Hainer.

Because Dorothy and David Putman did not have a son named Richard or Derrick but did have a son named Albert, it seems that Albert Hainer, the son of Henry and Dorothy Hainer, was Dorothy's father and David Putman's father-in-law.

Richard Hainer also had a daughter Dorothy who it appears married a Mr. May and second a Mr. Gildes.

David Putman's wife Dorothy Hainer seems to have only married once.

Mark R.
What time frame are you looking for John Putnam Clement? I ask this because I have a John Putnam Clement in New York. I don't have any stats on him, but his father, John I. Clemenet was b. Nov. 27, 1904; d. Jan. 17. 1987; his mother Annette Putnam was b. May 11, 1907, NY; d. March 1978. Both parents are buried at the Centralia Cemetery; Stockton, Chautauqua County, NY.

Re: Missing Putman

According to Henry Lee Putman's notes, Frank Putman was buried in the buried Dragerton Cemetery. Dragerton later became Sunnyside and is now being absorbed by the town of East Carbon, Utah.
The main business at the time of Frank's death was the Dragerton mine which was served by a railroad.
I tried researching the cemetery records but they have been destroyed. They were stored in the basement of the main office at the mine and the basement was flooded. I was told that everything was scooped up by a little tractor and then sent to the dump.

Dave Putman

Yes thanks for the info......just to let you know the Kemper family tree and Strassel family tree are both mine. I have recently been updating my tree not online as much but mostly to my personal computer. Ed and Ellen died in Illinois. I wrote to the historical archives and they sent me about four different newspaper articles (very detailed on there death. I will eventually get the online tree updated.
Thanks Kristal.

Okay, i am really stuck now and turning to all of you for some help. I have been researching my husbands side of the family. Edward Putman was the father of Ralph and Glenn and is wife was Ellen Partlow. Edward shot his wife around 1937 and then killed himself. The funny thing is i cannot find any death records in minnesota, north dakota, and south dakota, the only areas that i know they had lived. If anyone has any recolection of this family or names please let me know? Thanks Kristal

go to http://www.billputman.com/VAfauquier.pdf
use the find function in Acrobat search for Lucinda Putman.
Going forward there is info about Ella and backwards to 10th century England.

I have a parallel database in PAF to Bill's (much of the work his), but unless you traffic in gedcom databases it is not of much use to you. Your husband and I are related through Thomas Putman III 1665ish Gloucester Co., VA. My line goes forward through Zachariah, his through William. I hope this helps.

Best,
Dan
